Abstract— Olivine grains from selected meteorites (the Springwater pallasite, the Lowicz mesosiderite, the ALH 84025 brachinite, the Krymka LL3 chondrite, and the Calcalong Creek lunar meteorite) and terrestrial rocks (San Carlos forsterite and Rockport fayalite) were studied by optical microscopy and high-precision electron microprobe analysis. Detailed microprobe traverses revealed regular igneous zoning in the Krymka and Calcalong Creek olivines. Traverses across the San Carlos forsterite grain are flat and display no chemical variations larger than the 2σ range of counting error (±0.2 mol% Fa). Traverses across olivine grains in the ALH 84025, Lowicz, and Springwater meteorites show regular patterns of periodic or wavy chemical variations well exceeding the 2σ uncertainty range. However, no lamellar structure was seen in backscattered electron images. It is suggested that the periodic chemical variations may be due to spinodal decomposition of primary, more or less homogeneous grains. I conclude that the absence of earlier reports of such variations simply means that olivine grains in equilibrated meteorites have not been examined closely enough to detect them. 相似文献

North-South asymmetry of the daily interplanetary magnetic field spiral during the period: 1965–1990

We have extended our earlier study of the dependance of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) spiral on the magnetic polarity to cover the 26-year period 1965–1990. Our analysis reveals that: 1. The spiral angle north of the current sheet is higher than south of it. 2. During both of negative solar polarity epochs the IMF spiral is stable; it shows more variation during positive polarity epoch. 3. The included angle is lower than 180° during negative polarity epochs and higher than 180° during positive polarity epoch. 4. Summary There is a general agreement that meteoroid streams form through the ejection of dust grains, or meteoroids, up to a few centimeters in size from comets and possibly asteroids. After ejection these meteoroids are subject to forces arising from Solar radiation and the gravitational fields of the planets. Meteoroids may also break up into smaller ones through collisions and other effects. In many cases meteor showers have been observed for millennia, with material being fed into the stream throughout this period from the parent and material lost through the external effects mentioned. Much of the lost material forms the general sporadic background. For the period 1917–1987, Greek seismic activity exhibits a very significant positive correlation to the preceding global activity with a time-lag of 15 years. It seems that all Greece and the two characteristic areas in which we have separated it (Greece without Arc, and the area of the Greek seismic Arc), follow the global seismic activity but with a time-shift of 15 years. Moreover, it seems to exist an intrinsic interaction mechanism between the Greek seismic arc and the rest of Greece, which may be deduced by their different behavior exhibited when they are correlated with the global activity, as well as from the correlation between themselves, where a very significant positive correlation has been found with a time-lag of 3 years, for Greece without arc preceding. A quasi-periodic term of 30-yrs is also observed in these detailed four seismic time-series.The cross-correlation analysis of seismic time-series, as shown, is served as a powerful tool to clarify the complicated space-time pattern of the world wide mosaic of tectonic plate motions. The implications of spring-block model of tectonic plates interaction is invoked, considering the earth's rotation rate changes as their triggering agent.Particular emphasis is given to the potential of such studies in earthquake prediction efforts from local or regional scales to a global scale and vice-versa. 相似文献

One explanation for the disparity between cold dark matter (CDM) predictions of galaxy numbers and observations could be that there are numerous dark galaxies in the Universe. These galaxies may still contain baryons, but no stars, and may be detectable in the 21-cm line of atomic hydrogen. The results of surveys for such objects, and simulations that do/do not predict their existence, are controversial. In this paper, we use an analytical model of galaxy formation, consistent with CDM, to first show that dark galaxies are certainly a prediction of the model. Secondly, we show that objects like VIRGOHI21, a dark galaxy candidate recently discovered by us, while rare are predicted by the model. Thirdly, we show that previous 'blind' H i surveys have placed few constraints on the existence of dark galaxies. This is because they have either lacked the sensitivity and/or velocity resolution or have not had the required detailed optical follow up. We look forward to new 21-cm blind surveys [Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey and Arecibo Galactic Environments Survey (AGES)] using the Arecibo multibeam instrument which should find large numbers of dark galaxies if they exist. 相似文献

We studied the radio source associated with the ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 5408 ( L X ≈ 1040 erg s−1 ) . The radio spectrum is steep (index ≈−1 ), consistent with optically thin synchrotron emission, not with flat-spectrum core emission. Its flux density (≈0.28 mJy at 4.8 GHz, at a distance of 4.8 Mpc) was the same in the March 2000 and December 2004 observations, suggesting steady emission rather than a transient outburst. However, it is orders of magnitude higher than expected from steady jets in stellar-mass microquasar. Based on its radio flux and spectral index, we suggest that the radio source is either an unusually bright supernova remnant, or, more likely, a radio lobe powered by a jet from the black hole (BH). Moreover, there is speculative evidence that the source is marginally resolved with a radius ∼30 pc. A faint H ii region of similar size appears to coincide with the radio and X-ray sources, but its ionization mechanism remains unclear. Using a self-similar solution for the expansion of a jet-powered electron–positron plasma bubble, in the minimum-energy approximation, we show that the observed flux and (speculative) size are consistent with an average jet power ≈ 7 × 1038 erg s−1 ∼ 0.1 L X ∼ 0.1 L Edd , an age ≈105 yr, a current velocity of expansion ≈80 km s−1 . We briefly discuss the importance of this source as a key to understand the balance between luminosity and jet power in accreting BHs. 相似文献

The basic properties of acoustic wave propagation in stellar interiors can be analysed from the autocorrelation function (ACF) of intensity (or velocity) observations without measuring the resonant p-mode frequencies. We show how the strength of acoustic wave refraction in the stellar core, or forward acoustic amplitude, can be measured from a modulation in the ACF. This is the basic physical quantity which governs the so-called 'small frequency separations', and its measurement from the ACF can be used for determining the small frequency separations when the data is of insufficient quality for a reliable identification of the stellar p-mode frequencies. 相似文献

A flare of OH maser emission was discovered in W75N in 2000. Its location was determined with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to be within 110 au from one of the ultracompact H ii regions, Very Large Array 2 (VLA2). The flare consisted of several maser spots. Four of the spots were found to form Zeeman pairs, all of them with a magnetic field strength of about 40 mG. This is the highest ever magnetic field strength found in OH masers, an order of magnitude higher than in typical OH masers. Three possible sources for the enhanced magnetic field are discussed: (i) the magnetic field of the exciting star dragged out by the stellar wind; (ii) the general interstellar field in the gas compressed by the magnetohydrodynamic shock; and (iii) the magnetic field of planets which orbit the exciting star and produce maser emission in gaseous envelopes. 相似文献
