The destabilization of kaolinite suspension by anionic flocculant addition occurs in three zones; free settling, hindered settling and compression which usually includes a final bed raking process in mineral processing practice. This paper reports changes in the kaolinite aggregate and floc structures in the different settling and raking zones by cryo-vitrification/cryo-SEM techniques with image analysis combining micro- and macro-flocs. Cryo-SEM images indicate that, even during free settling, fine clay particles are bridged predominantly in edge–edge (E–E) with some face–face (F–F) configurations forming single, small flocs and some chain structures. When these small flocs and chains settle into the hindered settling zone, the collision between flocs and chains results in “honeycomb” network structures formed with lateral chain-like extension. The settled bed consists of these honeycomb structures with both inter-aggregate and intra-aggregate trapped water and has relatively low bed density (e.g. < 12 wt.% for a 2 wt.% slurry). The effect of the raking process in dramatically improving thickener underflow solids has been extensively studied but the structural changes in flocs and aggregates in this process are less well defined. Raking the compression zone for 1 h at 3 rpm can release some of the trapped water in the “honeycomb” structure and the bed density for 2 wt.% slurry improves dramatically to more than 36 wt.%. Cryo-SEM illustrates the extensive restructuring of flocs from predominantly E–E to predominantly F–F in many areas. The STructural IMage ANalysis (STIMAN) software is used to combine a series of images at magnifications from 1000× to 8000×, including both macro- and micro-flocs. This structural analysis comparing the un-raked and raked bed samples gives increases in total particle area of 30% and in relative particle area of 6%. The relatively low energy rake action of the shear stress results in the disruption of the E–E chains and the honeycomb structure, partly releasing the trapped water and inducing some E–E to F–F aggregate restructuring are clearly illustrated in these results. 相似文献

This paper presents qualitative estimates of sediment discharge from opposite valley flanks in the S–N-oriented Val Lumnezia,
eastern Swiss Alps, and relates inferred differences in sediment flux to the litho-tectonic architecture of bedrock. The valley
flank on the western side hosts the deep-seated Lumnezia landslide where an area of ca. 30 km2 has experienced slip rates of several centimetres per year, potentially resulting in high sediment discharge to the trunk
stream (i.e. the Glogn River). High slip rates have resulted in topographic changes that are detectable on aerial photographs
and measurable with geodetic tools. In contrast, a network of tributary channels dissects the valley flank on the eastern
side. There, an area of approximately 18 km2 corresponding to < 30% of the surface has experienced a change in the landscape mainly by rock avalanche and rock fall, and
the magnitudes of changes are below the calibration limit of digital photogrammetry. We thus infer lower magnitudes of sediment
discharge on the eastern tributaries than on the western valley side, where landsliding has been the predominant erosional
process. These differences are interpreted to be controlled by the dip-slope situation of bedrock on the western side that
favours down-slope slip of material.
Morphometric investigations reveal that the western valley side is characterized by a low topographic roughness because this
valley flank has not been dissected by a channel network. It appears that high sediment discharge of the Lumnezia landslide
has inhibited the establishment of a stable channel network and has largely controlled the overall evolution of the landscape.
This contrasts to the general notion that channelized processes exert the first-order control on landscape evolution and formation
of relief and needs to be considered in future studies about landscape architecture, drainage network and sediment discharge. 相似文献

A series of numerical experiments for data assimilation with the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) in a shallow water model are
reported. Temperature profiles measured at a North Sea location, 55°30ˊ North and 0°55ˊ East (referred to as the CS station
of the NERC North Sea project), are assimilated in 1-D simulations. Comparison of simulations without assimilation to model
results obtained when assimilating data with the EnKF allows us to assess the filter performance in reproducing features of
the observations not accounted for by the model. The quality of the model error sampling is tested as well as the validity
of the Gaussian hypothesis underlying the analysis scheme of the EnKF. The influence of the model error parameters and the
frequency of the data assimilation are investigated and discussed. From these experiments, a set of optimal parameters for
the model error sampling are deduced and used to test the behavior of the EnKF when propagating surface information into the

Glacial isostatic adjustment in Fennoscandia from GRACE data and comparison with geodynamical models
The Earth’s gravity field observed by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission shows variations due to the integral effect of mass variations in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere. Several institutions, such as the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) Potsdam, the University of Texas at Austin, Center for Space Research (CSR) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, provide GRACE monthly solutions, which differ slightly due to the application of different reduction models and centre-specific processing schemes. The GRACE data are used to investigate the mass variations in Fennoscandia, an area which is strongly influenced by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Hence the focus is set on the computation of secular trends. Different filters (e.g. isotropic and non-isotropic filters) are discussed for the removal of high frequency noise to permit the extraction of the GIA signal. The resulting GRACE based mass variations are compared to global hydrology models (WGHM, LaDWorld) in order to (a) separate possible hydrological signals and (b) validate the hydrology models with regard to long period and secular components. In addition, a pattern matching algorithm is applied to localise the uplift centre, and finally the GRACE signal is compared with the results from a geodynamical modelling. The GRACE data clearly show temporal gravity variations in Fennoscandia. The secular variations are in good agreement with former studies and other independent data. The uplift centre is located over the Bothnian Bay, and the whole uplift area comprises the Scandinavian Peninsula and Finland. The secular variations derived from the GFZ, CSR and JPL monthly solutions differ up to 20%, which is not statistically significant, and the largest signal of about 1.2 Gal/year is obtained from the GFZ solution. Besides the GIA signal, two peaks with positive trend values of about 0.8 Gal/year exist in central eastern Europe, which are not GIA-induced, and also not explainable by the hydrology models. This may indicate that the recent global hydrology models have to be revised with respect to long period and secular components. The monitoring of continental water stages is a requirement for meeting human needs and assessing ongoing climatic changes. However, regular gauging networks fail to provide the information needed for spatial coverage and timely delivery. Although the space missions discussed here were not primarily dedicated to hydrology, 18 years of satellite altimetry have furnished complementary data that can be used to create hydrological products, such as time series of stages, estimated discharges of rivers or volume change of lakes, river altitude profiles or leveling of in situ stations. Raw data still suffer uncertainties of one to several decimeters. These require specific reprocessing such as waveform retracking or geophysical correction editing; much work still remains to be done. Besides, measuring the flow velocity appears feasible owing to SAR interferometer techniques. Inundated surfaces, and the time variations of their extent, are currently almost routinely computed using satellite imagery. Thus, the compilation of the continuous efforts of the scientific community in these various investigative directions, such as recording from space the discharges of rivers or the change in water volume stored in lakes, can be foreseen in the near future. 相似文献

This article deals with the following two questions. Are acoustic measurements in running waters appropriate for a highly resolved investigation of the bedload transport? Which characterizations of the bedload regarding mass and shape are possible via the acoustic signals? The signals were recorded by means of data recorders (Tascam Inc. DAP1 Portable Data Recorder) and hydrophones (International Transducer Corp. ITC‐4001 A). The ITC‐4001 is a shallow water omnidirectional transducer containing a flexural disc transducer utilizing Channelite‐5400 ceramics mounted in a rugged corrosion‐resistant housing. These hydrophones were screwed onto the bottom side of stainless steel plates, serving as a contact surface for the bedload in motion above them. After more than 100 series of tests in the laboratory, which indicated the basic relations between the dimension, shape and weight of the bedload and the resulting signal, field tests of the measuring system were conducted. By artificially produced flood waves in the small brooks Riverisbach, Olewiger Bach and by a winter flood wave in the River Moselle, it is possible to elaborate similar structures of the signal course of the bedload movement. The highest transport rates can be observed at the beginning of the increasing limbs and behind the peaks of the waves. At the beginning of the waves, the increasing transport power of the water and the loose material can be considered as the cause for this result. The high stream velocity behind the wave peaks explains the increase in the bedload transport so that material from the channel beds is unfastened and will be mobilized. The characterization of the bedload regarding the shape and mass is still limited regarding the field measurements and could be solved only for homogeneous grain sizes and single stones under laboratory conditions. Ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) for spectral accelerations have traditionally focused on the range of response
periods most closely associated with the dynamic characteristics of buildings. Providing predictions only in this period range
(from 0.1 to 2 or 3 s) has also accommodated the assumed limitations on the usable period range resulting from the processing
of accelerograms. There are, however, engineering applications for which estimates of spectral ordinates are required at shorter
response periods. Recent work has demonstrated that high-frequency spectral ordinates are relatively insensitive to record
processing, contrary to previous assumptions. In the light of this finding, additional regressions are performed to extend
a recent pan-European GMPE to higher response frequencies. This model and others that also include coefficients for spectral
ordinates at several high response frequencies are used to explore options for interpolating coefficients for equations that
do not provide good coverage in this range. The challenges and uncertainties associated with such interpolations are discussed.
The paper concludes that a set of standard response frequencies could be usefully established for future GMPEs. 相似文献

This study evaluated the toxicity of dispersant application which is, in nearshore area, a controversial response technique to oil spill. Through an experimental approach with juveniles of Liza aurata, the toxicity of five exposure conditions was evaluated: (i) a chemically dispersed oil simulating dispersant application; (ii) a single dispersant as an internal control of chemically dispersed oil; (iii) a mechanically dispersed oil simulating natural dispersion of oil; (iv) a water soluble fraction of oil simulating an undispersed and untreated oil slick and (v) uncontaminated seawater as a control exposure condition. The relative concentration of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) biliary metabolites showed that the incorporation of these toxic compounds was increased if the oil was dispersed, whether mechanically or chemically. However, toxicity was not observed at the organism level since the aerobic metabolic scope and the critical swimming speed of exposed fish were not impaired. 相似文献

De-embankment in the salt marshes of the island of Langeoog was carried out in 2004, thereby inducing an artificial transgression
within an area of 2.2 km2. Material from three suspended matter traps (SMTs) located along a N–S transect was collected monthly between January 2006
and February 2007. Besides geochemical (major and trace elements) and grain-size analyses, the duration and height of water
cover were continuously measured by pressure gauges during the sampling period at two sites, thus revealing inundation frequency
(max. 280 year−1) and level (max. 2.4 m). Generally, the silt-dominated SMT material exhibits a geochemical composition similar to that of
suspended particulate matter from the adjacent Wadden Sea. However, distinctly increasing enrichments of TOC, P, Mn and Mo
from the shoreline towards the higher salt marsh clearly indicate fractionation processes during material transport. Geochemical
comparison with older Holocene coastal deposits reveals a mixture of brackish and tidal flat sediments, thus reflecting an
early stage of sea-level rise and the development from a terrestrial towards a marine-dominated system. Sedimentation rates
are higher than the local sea-level rise, as revealed by vertical salt marsh growth. Storm surges deliver the highest amounts
of sediment and play an important role in salt marsh accumulation within the study area. Average accumulation rates of TOC
(780 t year−1), P (54 t year−1) and Mn (5.2 t year−1) in the de-embanked area suggest that the former sand-dominated sediments currently receive significant amounts of reactive
organic-rich material, thus fostering biogeochemical cycling. 相似文献

Recently, De Marchi, Paresce & Pulone studied a sample of 20 globular clusters and found that all clusters with high concentrations have steep stellar mass functions while clusters with low concentration have comparatively shallow mass functions. No globular clusters were found with a flat mass function and high concentration. This seems curious since more concentrated star clusters are believed to be dynamically more evolved and should have lost more low-mass stars via evaporation, which would result in a shallower mass function in the low-mass part.
We show that this effect can be explained by residual-gas expulsion from initially mass segregated star clusters, and is enhanced further through unresolved binaries. If gas expulsion is the correct mechanism to produce the observed trend in the c –α -plane, then observation of these parameters would allow to constrain cluster starting conditions such as star formation efficiency and the time-scale of gas expulsion. 相似文献
