In this the second of a two-part study, we examine the physical mechanisms responsible for the increasing contrast of the land–sea surface air temperature (SAT) in summertime over the Far East, as observed in recent decades and revealed in future climate projections obtained from a series of transient warming and sensitivity experiments conducted under the umbrella of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5. On a global perspective, a strengthening of land–sea SAT contrast in the transient warming simulations of coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation models is attributed to an increase in sea surface temperature (SST). However, in boreal summer, the strengthened contrast over the Far East is reproduced only by increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. In response to SST increase alone, the tropospheric warming over the interior of the mid- to high-latitude continents including Eurasia are weaker than those over the surrounding oceans, leading to a weakening of the land–sea SAT contrast over the Far East. Thus, the increasing contrast and associated change in atmospheric circulation over East Asia is explained by CO2-induced continental warming. The degree of strengthening of the land–sea SAT contrast varies in different transient warming scenarios, but is reproduced through a combination of the CO2-induced positive and SST-induced negative contributions to the land–sea contrast. These results imply that changes of climate patterns over the land–ocean boundary regions are sensitive to future scenarios of CO2 concentration pathways including extreme cases.  相似文献

The source mechanism of the ML 4.0 25 April 2016 Lacq earthquake (Aquitaine Basin, South-West France) is analyzed from the available public data and discussed with respect to the geometry of the nearby Lacq gas field. It is one of the biggest earthquakes in the area in the past few decades of gas extraction and the biggest after the end of gas exploitation in 2013. The routinely obtained location shows its hypocenter position inside the gas reservoir. We first analyze its focal mechanism through regional broad-band seismograms recorded in a radius of about 50 km epicentral distances and obtain EW running normal faulting above the reservoir. While the solution is stable using regional data only, we observe a large discrepancy between the recorded data on nearby station URDF and the forward modeling up to 1 Hz. We then look for the best epicenter position through performing wave propagation simulations and constraining the potential source area by the peak ground velocity (PGV). The resulting epicentral position is a few to several km away to the north or south direction with respect to station URDF such that the simulated particle motions are consistent with the observation. The initial motion of the seismograms shows that the epicenter position in the north from URDF is preferable, indicating the north-east of the Lacq reservoir. This study is an application of full waveform simulations and characterization of near-field ground motion in terms of an engineering factor such as PGV. The finally obtained solution gives a moment magnitude of Mw 3.9 and the best focal depth of 4 km, which corresponds to the crust above the reservoir rather than its interior. This position is consistent with the tendency of Coulomb stress change due to a compaction at 5 km depth in the crust. Therefore, this earthquake can be interpreted as a relaxation of the shallow crust due to a deeper gas reservoir compaction so that the occurrence of similar events cannot be excluded in the near future. It would be necessary to continue monitoring such local induced seismicity in order to better understand the reservoir/overburden behavior and better assess the local seismic hazard even after the end of gas exploitation.  相似文献

We conducted hydrographic observations in 2002 to investigate the anticyclonic eddy that emerges every summer in Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, and elucidate dynamical structure and wind-driven upwelling within the eddy. The anticyclonic eddy has a vertical scale of 32 m and is characterized by a strong baroclinic flow and a sharp pycnocline with a concave isopycnal structure. The sharp pycnocline occurs below a warm and relatively low-salinity water termed summer Funka Bay water (FS), which is formed by heating from solar radiation and dilution from river discharge in summertime Funka Bay. Flow of the anticyclonic eddy rotates as a rigid body at each layer, and the horizontal scale and rotation period of the eddy in the surface layer are about 15 km and 2.2 days, respectively. The dynamical balance of the anticyclonic eddy is well explained by the gradient flow balance. The contribution of centrifugal force to the gradient flow balance is about 27%. Therefore, the effect of the nonlinear term associated with centrifugal force cannot be neglected in considering the dynamics of the anticyclonic eddy in summertime Funka Bay. In addition, upwelling of subsurface water was observed in the surface layer of the central part of the eddy. The formation mechanism of this upwelling is consistent with interaction between horizontal uniform wind and the eddy. This upwelling is driven by upward Ekman pumping velocity related to the horizontal divergence of Ekman transport. In summertime Funka Bay, there are two wind effects that affect the anticyclonic eddy: a decay effect of the upwelling of subsurface water resulting from horizontal uniform wind (mainly northwesterly wind), and a maintenance or spin-up effect of horizontal non-uniform wind (mainly southerly–southeasterly seasonal wind) with negative wind stress curl.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to estimate heaving pressures of saturated soil partially frozen in a closed system. Temperatures at both ends of a specimen were kept constant, i.e., positive at the top and negative at the bottom. When the overburden pressure P was maintained at a constant value, the pore-water pressure Pw, which showed a certain value before freezing, decreased gradually as freezing progressed, finally attaining a specific value, whereafter the specimen ceased taking water into it. The pressure difference between P and Pw, at this stage was defined as the upper limit of heaving pressure σu, which evidently depended on the temperature θc of the cooling end, in accordance with the relation: σu = −11.4 θc (kg/cm2)

It corresponds to the modified Clausius-Clapeyron's formula, which gives the freezingpoint depression of an ice—water system, where the pressure acting on the ice differs from that on the water. This is the same as the value obtained by Radd and Oertle (1973). It is considered, however, that, when θc lowers, the value of θu reaches finally a constant value smaller than the one obtained by the above equation. In order to investigate the circulation pattern and the characteristics of tidal currents in the sea near the mouth of Suruga Bay, current meausrements were conducted at two stations at near-surface levels during the warm months of the year (late May to early October). The mean currents at the eastern and western stations are inversely correlated with each other: when inflow occurs at the eastern station outflow occurs at the western one andvice versa. The circulation pattern, therefore, can be determined from the mean current at either station,e.g., inflow or outflow at the eastern station corresponds to counterclockwise and clockwise circulation, respectively. The predominant tidal constituents of the measured currents are diurnal while those of the sea level along the bay are semidiurnal. The amplitudes of the diurnal constituents of the current show clear long-term variations besides the semimonthly variation corresponding to the phase of the moon.Variation in the path of the Kuroshio off the bay mouth seems to influence not only the circulation pattern but also the tidal currents in the sea near the bay mouth. When the Kuroshio axis is to the north of Zenisu, a shoal off the eastern side of the bay, the circulation pattern is counterclockwise and the amplitude of the tidal current is small. On the other hand, when the Kuroshio is to the south ofZenisu, the circulation pattern is weakly clockwise or stagnant and the amplitude of the tidal current is large.  相似文献

For the Argo Project, monitoring the global upper ocean by a large number of profiling floats, maintaining the quality of salinity data is critical; the goal for measurement accuracy is ±0.01. Experiments using the method of Wong et al. (2003), the standard delayed-mode quality control (dQC) for the Project, show that its performance depends critically on the reference datasets used. This study concludes that the method is useful for Argo and has sufficient potential to achieve the goal for salinity measurement in the North Pacific, when suitable reference datasets are prepared. Considering the Wong et al. (2003) algorithms, we suggest that reference datasets with the following characteristics will be most suitable for Argo dQC: They should be basically derived from the most extensive datasets, such as the latest World Ocean Database; in regions with denser observations, datasets with carefully quality controls should be used; in the regions with subsurface temperature inversions, such as the subarctic North Pacific, the profiles used for the reference must extend below the deepest temperature maximum to prepare proper salinities for the deep layer reference.  相似文献

The interaction of chromium (III) with humic substances obtained from pond sediment was experimentally studied using electrophoresis combined with ultrafiltration. The results show that within the neutral pH range chromium (III) in the presence of humic substances and some organic acids forms uncharged and/or negatively charged organic complexes of various molecular weights. A part of the chromium(III)-humic or -fulvic acid complexes having a negative charge was of lower molecular weight. Chromium (III) spiked in fresh water exists as various soluble anionic and/or uncharged species, and the molecular weights of these anionic complexes correspond to those of chromium(III)-humic and -fulvic complexes. These complexes may remain as stable dissolved forms for 10 days. The significance of the occurrence of chromium(III)-organic complexes in natural water in the geochemical cycle of chromium in the hydrosphere is discussed.  相似文献

This paper examines the influence of aSargassum forest on the pH distribution in a small cove facing Wakasa Bay. The diurnal changes in spatial distribution of density and pH were observed in May 1977 during the season of luxuriant seaweed growth, and in August 1977 during the season of little growth. The observations were made at three-hour intervals for 24 hr in May, and 9 hr in August. During the period of strong density stratification, the observed pH distributions were divided into two types: (1) lower pH inshore and higher offshore in the upper layer in the evening and early morning, and (2) higher pH inshore and lower offshore in the daytime. During the period of weak stratification, a homogeneous pH distribution was observed. The pH distribution influenced bySargassum forest during the season of luxuriant growth was different from that during the season of little growth. The process that brought these spatial distributions is discussed. From early dawn to forenoon during the season of luxuriant growth, the heavier water, produced inshore by cooling through nocturnal radiation, cascaded as a stable laminar flow under the lighter water remaining under canopies of the forest and detached floating seaweeds. Reaching the offshore lower layer, and co-acting with algal respiration, this cascade influenced pH distribution. Some dynamical parameters for the process of cascading are calculated and examined.  相似文献

Kawai (1976, 1979) derived two simple relations among the apparent diffusivity (based on the geometric-average variance for principal axes of spreading) for many surface drifters in a patch and horizontal divergence and isotropic turbulent diffusivity for ambient water. By a new term medley diffusivity is meant an average of the products of the position coordinates relative to the centroid of drifters and the residual velocity, that is, the velocity left by subtracting the mean velocity and the velocity due to the linear velocity gradient from the velocity of a drifter. Regarding the medley diffusivity as the isotropic turbulent diffusivity that is weighted anisotropically according to drifters spreading along each of the principal axes, this paper derives a new relation with a form intermediate between the above two relations. Using the relation, this paper defines the new critical period within which the effect of horizontal divergence on the apparent diffusion surpasses that of isotropic turbulent diffusion, and discusses the time-scales on which the space-scale dependence of the squared divergence (Kawai, 1985b) is based. Stretching of a patch of drifters and deviation of drifters' position from the bivariate normal distribution enhance the effect of isotropic turbulent diffusion on the apparent diffusion. This stretching effect is equivalent to the shear effect on a horizontal plane. Remarks on reducing errors in the estimation of isotropic turbulent diffusivity are made.  相似文献

The thermal phase transition of K2SO4 has been investigated by high temperature polarized light microscopy. K2SO4 undergoes a first-order transition at 587° C where the orthorhombic low temperature form (Pmcn) transforms into a hexagonal high temperature modification (P63/mmc). Prior to the beginning of the phase transition, K2SO4 shows an anomalous optical behavior. The crystal apparently becomes optically uniaxial twice at 338° and 425° C, respectively, and truly optically uniaxial at 587° C. The phase transition propagates through an intermediate temperature form, which is sandwiched between the low and the high temperature forms and moves in a definite direction, 〈130〉 (orthorhombic indices), in the vicinity of the phase transition. Passing through the phase transition point on cooling, dark belts crossing each other are observed which are a result of the transformation twins parallel to {110} and {130}.  相似文献
