Calculations are performed of the vertical distribution of water vapor and condensate in an adiabatic atmosphere on Mars taking into account turbulent diffusion and terminal velocity. The distributions are found to be substantially different when terminal velocity is included. The eddy-diffusion coefficient in the troposphere cannot be much greater than 105 cm2sec?1 if optical depths are to be kept low enough to be consistent with observations. Processes in the boundary layer are also discussed. We conclude that virtually all the water vapor is to be found in the lowest 6–10 km and that the lowest 2km should have a greate r concentration than the rest of that layer. Some observational tests of these ideas and conclusion can be performed by the Viking missions to Mars.  相似文献

Crustal formation and evolution processes are of critical importance in the geochemical and thermal evolution of planets. As an aid to understanding these processes on Venus, we develop a general paradigm for: (1) the derivation of primary magmas, and (2) the range of possible conditions for remelting of crustal materials and the evolution of the products of remelting. We use as a basis for this paradigm the present knowledge of the bulk and surface composition, thermal structure, and surface geological and geochemical processes. For the range of conditions of derivation of primary magmas and crustal remelting, a wide range of magma types is possible, and no magma type can be arbitrarily excluded from consideration on Venus. We conclude that magmatic and volcanic activity on Venus, in its broadest sense, could be very similar to that on the Earth, although eruption styles are expected to vary due to environmental conditions (Head and Wilson, 1986). Major differences in magmatic and volcanic activity are likely to occur in two environments on Venus: (1) those analogous to terrestrial island arcs, where due to the absence of water, melts should be SiO2-undersaturated, and the more fluid melt products may produce widespread deposits of SiO2-poor ferrobasalts rather than more viscous SiO2-rich magmas and composite volcanoes, and (2) those in plains regions influenced by mantle plumes and hot spots, where highly picritic melts may periodically flood vast regions of the surface.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T.  The viscosities of hydrous haplogranitic melts synthesized by hydrothermal fusion at 2 kbar pressure and 800 to 1040° C have been measured at temperatures just above the glass transition and at a pressure of 1 bar using micropenetration techniques. The micropenetration viscometry has been performed in the viscosity range of 109 Pa s to 1012 Pa s. The samples ranged in water content from 0.4 to 3.5 wt%. For samples with up to 2.5 wt% H2O, the water contents have been determined using infrared spectroscopy obtained before and after each viscometry experiment to be constant over the duration of the measurements. Above this water content a measurable loss of water occurs during the viscometry. The viscosity data illustrate an extremely nonlinear decrease in viscosity with added water. The viscosity drops drastically with the addition of 0.5 wt% of water and then shallows out at water contents of 2 wt%. An additional viscosity datum point obtained from the analysis of fluid inclusions in a water-saturated HPG8 confirms a near invariance of the viscosity with the addition of water between 2 and 6 wt%. These measurements may be compared directly with the data of Hess et al. (1995, in press) for the effects of excess alkali and alkaline earth oxides on the viscosity of HPG8 (also obtained at 1 bar). The viscosity of the melts, compared on an equivalent molar basis, increases in the order H2O<(Li2O<Na2O< K2O<Rb2O,Cs2O<BaO<SrO<CaO<MgO< BeO). The extraordinary decrease in melt viscosity with added water is poorly reproduced by the calculation scheme of Shaw (1972) for the range of water contents investigated here. The speciation of water in the quenched glasses can be used to quantify the dependence of the viscosity on hydroxyl content. Considering only the hydroxyl groups as active fluidizers in the hydrous melts the nonlinearity of the viscosity decrease and the difference with the effects of the alkali oxides becomes larger. A new ophiuroid species from the Hauptrogenstein Formation (Middle Jurassic, Bajocian) of the Rehhag ridge near Schöntal, northwestern Switzerland, is described based on 34 specimens. The impression of an indeterminate astropectinid sea star has also been found. The fully articulated specimens have been smothered by mobile oolitic dunes or sandwaves. The site can be genetically classified as an obrution deposit and belongs to the widely recognized “Hauptrogenstein type”. The remains are assigned to the genus Geocoma d’Orbigny 1850, best known from the type species, G. carinata (Münster), from the Tithonian Plattenkalk of Zandt. As suggested by Kutscher (1997) this species also includes Ophiocten kelheimense Boehm 1889, now documented by numerous well-preserved specimens from the Plattenkalk of Hienheim. Kutscher assigned the Hienheim specimens to the genus Sinosura Hess 1964 and used both names though G. carinata has priority. Despite rather small differences Sinosura is retained as a valid genus besides Geocoma, and both are placed in the family Aplocomidae Hess 1965. Geocoma and Sinosura share small adpressed arm spines with Aplocoma d’Orbigny 1852. Aplocoma is represented by a number of Triassic and Jurassic species, and the subfamily Aplocominae is proposed herein for the three genera. A second subfamily, Ophiopetrinae, is proposed for the genera Ophiopetra Enay &; Hess 1962 and Ophiohybris Hess 1964, and is characterized by larger, erect arm spines.  相似文献

 The southern Voltaian Sedimentary Basin underlies an area of about 5000 km2 in east-central Ghana. Groundwater in the basin occurs in fractures in highly consolidated siliciclastic aquifers overlain by a thin unsaturated zone. Aquifer parameters were evaluated from available aquifer-test data on 28 shallow wells in the basin. Hydraulic-conductivity values range from 0.04–3.6 m/d and are about two orders of magnitude greater than the hydraulic conductivity calculated using Darcy's Law and the average groundwater velocity estimated from carbon-14 dating. Linear-regression analysis of the transmissivity and specific-capacity data allowed the establishment of an empirical relationship between log transmissivity and log specific capacity for the underlying aquifers. Groundwater chemistry in the basin is controlled by the weathering of albitic plagioclase feldspar. The weathering rates of various minerals were estimated using 14C-derived average velocity in the basin. The weathering rate of albite was calculated to be 2.16 μmol L–1 yr–1 with the resulting formation of 3.3 μmol L–1 yr–1 of kaolinite and 0.047 μmol L–1 yr–1 of calcite. The low porosity and permeability of the aquifers in the basin are attributed to the precipitation of secondary minerals on fracture surfaces and interlayer pore spaces.
