In April 1986, a well-instrumented NOAA WP-3D research aircraft conducted three flights in the Canadian Arctic tied to the Canadian Atmospheric Environment Service baseline station in Alert, Northwest Territories. Two of the flights were coordinated with the National Aeronautical Establishment of Canada Twin Otter and the University of Washington C-131 research aircraft. The haze observed in the Canadian Arctic was well-aged and mixed throughout the troposphere in concentrations well below those observed during the previous weeks in the Alaskan Arctic. Over the ice, beneath the surface temperature inversion, ozone was generally depleted to near zero. Over the coast at Alert, there is evidence that topography and downslope winds reduce the strength of the inversion, thus allowing lower tropospheric gases and aerosols to mix down to the surface. At the top of the troposphere, an aerosol-depleted region was observed. In the lower stratosphere, aerosol concentrations were elevated above those observed in the troposphere. 相似文献

We investigate the behaviour of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars between metallicities Z = 10−4 and 10−8 . We determine which stars undergo an episode of flash-driven mixing, where protons are ingested into the intershell convection zone, as they enter the thermally pulsing AGB phase and which undergo third dredge-up. We find that flash-driven mixing does not occur above a metallicity of Z = 10−5 for any mass of star and that stars above 2 M⊙ do not experience this phenomenon at any metallicity. We find carbon ingestion (CI), the mixing of carbon into the tail of hydrogen-burning region, occurs in the mass range 2 M⊙ to around 4 M⊙ . We suggest that CI may be a weak version of the flash-driven mechanism. We also investigate the effects of convective overshooting on the behaviour of these objects. Our models struggle to explain the frequency of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars that have both significant carbon and nitrogen enhancement. Carbon can be enhanced through flash-driven mixing, CI or just third dredge-up. Nitrogen can be enhanced through hot bottom burning and the occurrence of hot dredge-up also converts carbon into nitrogen. The C/N ratio may be a good indicator of the mass of the primary AGB stars. 相似文献

Study of Lake Pepin and Lake St. Croix began more than a century ago, but new information has permitted a closer look at the
geologic history of these two riverine lakes located on the upper Mississippi River system. Drainages from large proglacial
lakes Agassiz and Duluth at the end of the last glaciation helped shape the current valleys. As high-discharge outlet waters
receded, tributary streams deposited fans of sediment in the incised river valleys. These tributary fans dammed the main river,
forming riverine lakes. Lake Pepin was previously thought to be a single long continuous lake, extending for 80 km from its
dam at the Chippewa River fan all the way up to St. Paul, with an arm extending up the St. Croix valley. Recent borings taken
at bridge and dam locations show more than a single section of lake sediments, indicating a more complex history. The Minnesota
and Mississippi Rivers did not always follow their current paths. Valleys cut into bedrock but now buried by glacial sediment
indicate former river courses, with the most recent of these from the last interglacial period marked at the surface by chains
of lakes. The morphology of the Mississippi valley bottom, and thus the morphology of Lake Pepin as it filled the valley,
is reflect in part by the existence of these old valleys but also by the presence of glacial outwash terraces and the alluvial
fans of tributary streams. A sediment core taken in Lake Pepin near Lake City had a piece of wood in gravels just below lake
sediments that dated to 10.3 ka cal. BP, indicating that the lake formed as the Chippewa River fan grew shortly after the
floodwaters of Lakes Agassiz and Duluth receded. Data from new borings indicate small lakes were dammed behind several tributary
fans in the Mississippi River valley between the modern Lake Pepin and St. Paul. One tributary lake, here called Early Lake
Vermillion, may have hydraulically dammed the St. Croix River, creating an incipient Lake St. Croix. The tributary fans from
the Vermillion River, the Cannon River, and the Chippewa River all served to segment the main river valley into a series of
riverine lakes. Later the growth of the Chippewa fan surpassed that of the Vermillion and Cannon fans to create a single large
lake, here called late Lake Pepin, which extended upstream to St. Paul. Sediment cores taken from Lake Pepin did not have
significant organic matter to develop a chronology from radiocarbon dating. Rather, magnetic features were matched with those
from a Lake St. Croix core, which did have a known radiocarbon chronology. The Pepin delta migration rate was then estimated
by projecting the elevations of the top of the buried lake sediments to the dated Lake Pepin core, using an estimated slope
of 10 cm/km, the current slope of Lake Pepin sediment surface. By these approximations, the Lake Pepin delta prograded past
Hastings 6.0 ka cal BP and Red Wing 1.4 ka cal BP.

It has recently been suggested that periodic influxes of hot but heavy magma into the base of a basaltic magma chamber can remain isolated from the rest of the chamber while the new magma cools and crystallization proceeds. When thermal equilibrium is almost complete, the suspended crystals settle out and the residual, less dense liquid can then mix with the fluid above. In the present paper the basic fluid-dynamical processes underlying this model have been investigated in laboratory experiments using aqueous solutions. The lower layer was hot KNO3 solution, for which saturated solutions become less dense as the temperature decreases. With a cold, deeper layer of less dense NaNO3 or K2CO3 above the lower layer, there was strong convective transfer of heat through a sharp interface separating the layers, at a rate which is predicted here drawing on previous studies carried out with oceanographic applications in mind. Once crystallization began, non-equilibrium effects became important and the observed temperatures differ somewhat from those predicted. In the experiments crystals grew mainly from the bottom rather than while in suspension, but this is not an essential aspect of the model. The important fact is that the density of the residual liquid in the lower layer decreased until it became equal to that of the upper layer, and then the interface broke down so that the two layers mixed thoroughly together, leaving a layer of KNO3 crystals at the base. A small particle (ca. 10?6 g) was magnetically separated from a Ca,Al-rich inclusion of the Allende meteorite. By using instrumental neutron activation analysis it was found that the elements Os, W, Re, Ir, Mo, Ru and Pt were enriched by a mean factor of about 7000 relative to Cl chondrites.A polished section of the grain showed that it consisted mainly of silicates, with a rounded particle of metal and sulfide (20 μm across) attached to it.Concentrations of up to 11% Pt were determined with the microprobe in the Ni-Fe center of the particle. Furthermore, Rh was for the first time measured in an Allende inclusion. It is enriched in about the same degree as Pt, Ir and W. The Ni-Fe center was surrounded by troilite. Mo was concentrated in the sulfide, while Os and Ru were inhomogeneously distributed over the metal + sulfide phases. The particle is interpreted as direct product of metal condensation of the solar nebula. The sulfide phase formed at lower temperatures and caused redistribution of the refractory siderophile elements. Condensation calculations for a metal alloy show that Fe and Ni are expected to be already present at higher temperatures than the condensation temperatures of pure Fe. Pt and Rh, having lower condensation temperatures than pure Fe should also be completely condensed above the condensation temperature of pure Fe. Kinetic considerations show that minimum times to grow this kind of particle should be of the order of 500 years at 10?3 atm. 相似文献

The reactions of the bream,Abramis brama, to the ecological changes due to man-made eutrophication of Lake Constance were investigated.
It could be demonstrated that the bream adapted only to a negligible amount. Likely due to its largeness, structure of the
body and population composition the bream is more conservative than perch, roach and whitefish. The only reactions to the
changed environment are modificated vertical and horizontal distribution and partly plancton feeding in summer.
