Time-series analysis in cyclic stratigraphy: An example from the Cretaceous of the Southern Alps, Italy

The importance of time-series analysis in cyclic stratigraphy is evaluated by comparing three different methods (adaptive multiple taper spectral analysis, auto-/cross-correlation analysis, cova functions) applied to stratigraphic time series from the Early Cretaceous Cismon section in northern Italy. Carbonate content and magnetic susceptibility vary in a quasi-cyclic fashion in this pelagic limestone section and are almost perfectly negatively correlated. The spectral technique requires a high degree of preprocessing of the original data (interpolation and resampling at a regular interval, filtering, inversion) which introduces smoothing and rounding errors. The statistical correlation analysis also requires evenly and (for cross-correlation) correspondingly spaced series. The geostatistical cova functions (a generalization of the cross-variogram) prove to be the most versatile and robust of the methods compared. Cova functions can be calculated from unevenly and noncor-respondingly spaced time series without any preprocessing. This method also retains relatively more of the signal if noise and extreme outliers obscure the picture. The periodicities detected in the Cismon time series fall in the range of Milankovitch cycles. Cycle periods of 45 cm and 80 cm likely correspond to dominant precession and obliquity cycles. Due to the inaccuracy of the Cretaceous time scale periods cannot be matched exactly yet, but cycle ratios are close to expected ratios so that there is great potential for future cyclostratigraphic work to contribute to a substantial improvement of the geologic time scale.     

A new cluster algorithm for orientation data

An algorithm to classify data points on the sphere in distinct cluster groups is defined. The characteristics of the cluster groups and the rule for assigning data to the groups are related to a continuous differentiable density estimation. The modes of the estimated density are assumed to be representative of the groups; data points are then assigned to the mode reached by the steepest ascent. The major advantage of this procedure is its sensitivity in detecting cluster groups independently of their geometry and configuration. As a consequence, the procedure is capable of handling orientation data that may be arranged in girdles.     

冰川保护与旅游开发的抵触性分析--以蒂罗尔州皮茨山谷为例

本文基于一个实例研究。该研究聚焦于奥地利的皮茨山谷，其从冰川保护防线之危机、冰川灾难，以及经济利益驱使下的不可避免的旅游开发三个方面阐述了冰川保护与旅游开发的相互矛盾。本文力图从法律上和民意调查的资料上为冰川保护，抑或旅游开发寻求依据。面对区域开发这个不得不面对的现实问题，本文同时考虑到了环境保护与经济发展的双重方面。本文重在介绍西方学者的研究思路，以及法律和民意在西方决策层次上的重要意义，希望能飨同行，并与之切磋。     

Settler migration during the 1984/85 resettlement programme in Ethiopia

The recent history of resettlement in Ethiopia is briefly reviewed and the caused, flow patterns and some demographic impacts of the 1984/85 government-sponsored resettlement migration are examined with the objective of identifying motivations and constraints in the migration process, analysing changes in population distribution and examining policy implications. Famine was the major push factor in migration, but traditional reactions of peasants to drought and overpopulation caused more drought victims to leave their homes spontaneously for relief and transit centres than as recruits of the government-sponsored resettlement programme. However, motivation to migrate and distances travelled to centres showed strong regional variation, indicating the severity of the famine and traditional adaptive strategies. Changes in rural population density were significant in several awrajas (districts) but were reduced by return migration. Problems associated with this emergency resettlement programme are reflected in difficulties during programme implementation, generally low agricultural production of settlers and high rates of return migration. Further studies are needed on the ecological impact of settler migration in both sending and receiving areas, peasant coping behaviour, as well as the evolution of new settler migration patterns in the new settlement areas in W Ethiopia.

Zusammenfassung Aus zehnjährigen kontinuierlichen Messungen der Lufttemperatur und der relativen Luftfeuchtigkeit in Karlsruhe-Rheinhafen (2 m ü. Gr.) und Karlsruhe-Turmberg (175 m ü. Gr.) werden mittlere Tages- und Jahresgänge der effektiven TemperaturET berechnet.Die Auszählungen der Fälle mitET24,0°C (Schwülebereich) ergeben in beiden Höhen die größten Werte im Juli; die tageszeitlichen Maxima liegen dabei zwischen 15 und 18 Uhr und die Minima zwischen 3 und 6 Uhr. Von November bis März wurde dagegen je Dreistundenintervall die durchET24,0°C festgelegte Schwülegrenze nie überschritten.

The effective temperature from the point of sultriness in 2 and 175 m over ground

Summary For every three hours the mean effective temperatureET is computed from the air temperature and the relative air humidity which are measured at Karlsruhe-Rheinhafen (2 m o. g.) and at Karlsruhe-Turmberg (175 m o. g.). From theseET-data mean diurnal and annual variations ofET are computed for ten years (1963 to 1972).At the two heights the greatest frequencies ofET24.0°C (region of sultriness) are in July with maximum between 15 and 18 o'clock and minimum between 3 and 6 o'clock. From November to March however the sultriness-boundary determined byET24.0°C never occured.
