The possible effects of iron oxide coatings on the reactive surface area of calcite in column experiments have been studied and then modeled numerically. A column with six compartments separated by teflon filters was packed with Emscher Marl (essentially calcite). The marl was initially mixed with corundum as an internal standard. Hydrochloric acid with pH 3 was percolated through the column for a given period, after which the mineralogical changes were quantified by X-ray diffraction ex-situ. Then, the column compartments were re-filled and again percolated with HCl. This procedure was repeated five times. The losses and gains of calcite in the column compartments provided the data basis for modeling the entire experiment with the reactive transport code TOUGHREACT using a kinetic rate law. The experimental results showed that during the first period, loss of calcite in the first compartment is about 50 % less than that determined from the theoretical analysis. This showed the entrance of acid into the higher compartments through preferential flow paths (wormholes) which was observed at the boundary between sample and cell wall. This pattern could also be verified by the relatively high Peclet and low Damköhler numbers, showing a strongly advection-dominant system. Apart from calcite dissolution, structural Fe2+ released from calcite oxidized and formed iron hydroxide (FeOOH) coatings along preferential fluid pathways. Despite specific assumptions such as using pure calcite in the model, a comparison between modeling results and lab observations is instructive. The simulated calcite change patterns in the most compartments are consistent with the experiments. Some discrepancies are noted in the last compartment, which may bring the attention to a need for model improvements.  相似文献

The response of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre (SPG) to a persistent positive (or negative) phase of the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) is investigated using an ocean general circulation model forced with idealized atmospheric reanalysis fields. The integrations are analyzed with reference to a base-line integration for which the model is forced with idealized fields representing a neutral state of the NAO. In the positive NAO case, the results suggest that the well-known cooling and strengthening of the SPG are, after about 10 years, replaced by a warming and subsequent weakening of the SPG. The latter changes are caused by the advection of warm water from the subtropical gyre (STG) region, driven by a spin-up of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and the effect of an anomalous wind stress curl in the northeastern North Atlantic, which counteracts the local buoyancy forcing of the SPG. In the negative NAO case, however, the SPG response does not involve a sign reversal, but rather shows a gradual weakening throughout the integration. The asymmetric SPG-response to the sign of persistent NAO-like forcing and the different time scales involved demonstrate strong non-linearity in the North Atlantic Ocean circulation response to atmospheric forcing. The latter finding indicates that analysis based on the arithmetic difference between the two NAO-states, e.g. NAO+ minus NAO?, may hide important aspects of the ocean response to atmospheric forcing.  相似文献

The Tropical Cyclone Genesis Potential Index (GPI) was employed to investigate possible impacts of global warming on tropical cyclone genesis over the western North Pacific (WNP). The outputs of 20th century climate simulation by eighteen GCMs were used to evaluate the models’ ability to reproduce tropical cyclone genesis via the GPI. Based on proxy records from western Black Sea cores, we provide a comprehensive study of climate change during the last glacial maximum and late-glacial period in the Black Sea region. For the first time we present a record of relative changes in precipitation for NW Anatolia based on variations in the terrigenous supply expressed as detrital carbonate concentration. The good correspondence between reconstructed rainfall intensity in NW Anatolia and past western Mediterranean sea surface temperatures (SSTs) implies that during the glacial period the precipitation variability was controlled, like today, by Mediterranean cyclonic disturbances. Periods of reduced precipitation correlate well with low SSTs in the Mediterranean related to Heinrich events H1 and H2. Stable oxygen isotopes and lithological and mineralogical data point to a significant modification in the dominant freshwater/sediment source concomitant to the meltwater inflow after 16.4 cal ka BP. This change implies intensification of the northern sediment source and, with other records from the Mediterranean region, consistently suggests a reorganization of the atmospheric circulation pattern affecting the hydrology of the European continent. The early deglacial northward retreat of both atmospheric and oceanic polar fronts was responsible for the warming in the Mediterranean region, leading simultaneously to more humid conditions in central and northern Europe.  相似文献
