ABSTRACT Introduced aquatic macrophytes can dominate small agricultural waterways in summer and autumn becoming a significant management problem. Excessive growth can clog waterways, causing drainage issues and reducing agricultural productivity while in-stream velocities are reduced and sedimentation increased. Consequently, water managers remove them by mechanical clearance, chemical spray and cutting which can be costly and have negative impacts on in-stream habitat and ecological health. We trialled three tools to reduce macrophytes: hand-weeding, weed mat and artificial shading, at a reach-scale (50?m) and larger-scale (200–400?m). Hand-weeding reduced cover in the short-term, however macrophytes recovered to pre-treatment levels within one season. Weed mat along the banks was effective at reducing emergent macrophytes, particularly Erythranthe guttata (monkey musk) and Nasturtium microphyllum (watercress). Weed mat lasted for several growing seasons and continued to be effective. Shading over the waterway using polythene markedly reduced submerged macrophytes indicating that heavy shading by riparian plantings could reduce submerged macrophytes in the longer-term. These results indicate that in the short-term, weed mat could be used to limit sprawling emergent macrophytes. In the longer-term, weed mat used in conjunction with riparian planting could provide shading so that macrophyte cover in these small waterways could be reduced and controlled. 相似文献

We have compared solutions obtained from the general 13-moment system of transport equations with those obtained from the standard collision-dominated transport equations for conditions corresponding to low speed thermal proton flow in the topside ionosphere in the vicinity of the plasmapause. In general, the solutions obtained from the 13-moment system of equations, which allows for different species temperatures parallel and perpendicular to the geomagnetic field and non-classical heat flows, are different from those obtained from the standard transport equations, which account for isotropic temperatures and classical collision-dominated heat flows. Within the plasmasphere, where the electron density is high, the differences between the 13-moment and standard solutions are typically small. However, outside the plasmasphere where the electron density is lower and in the ionosphere above SAR-arcs, where substantial electron and proton heat flows occur, there can be significant differences between the 13-moment and standard solutions. Generally, the differences are much larger for the protons than for the electrons. Our 13-moment solutions indicate that the proton and electron distributions are anisotropic with the difference between parallel and perpendicular temperatures approaching 4000 K for the protons and 2500 K for the electrons in the ionosphere above SAR-arcs. Also, above SAR-arcs the 13-moment heat flow equations yield proton heat flows as much as a factor of 10 lower and electron heat flows as much as a factor of 2 lower than those predicted by the classical collision-dominated heat flow expressions for the same boundary conditions. 相似文献

Two natural, low K2O/Na2O, TTG tonalitic gneisses (one hornblende-bearing and the other biotite-bearing) were partially melted at 0.8–1.2 GPa (fluid-absent).
The chief melting reactions involve the breakdown of the biotite and hornblende. The hornblende tonalite is slightly less
fertile than the biotite tonalite, but melt volumes reach around 30% at 1,000°C. This contrasts with results of most previous
work on more potassic TTGs, which generally showed much lower fertility, though commonly producing more potassic melts. Garnet
is formed in biotite-bearing tonalitic protoliths at P > 0.8 GPa and at > 1.0 GPa in hornblende-bearing tonalitic protoliths. All fluid-absent experiments produced peraluminous
granitic to granodioritic melts, typically with SiO2 > 70 wt.%. For the biotite tonalite, increasing T formed progressively more melt with progressively lower K2O/Na2O. However, the compositions of melts from the hornblende tonalite do not vary significantly with T. With increasing P, melts from the biotite tonalite become less potassic, due to the increasing thermal stability of biotite. For the hornblende
tonalite, again there is no consistent trend. Fluid-absent melting of sodic TTGs produces melts with insufficient K2O to model the magmas that formed the voluminous, late, potassic granites that are common in Archaean terranes. Reconnaissance
fluid-present experiments at 0.6 GPa imply that H2O-saturated partial melting of TTGs is also not a viable process for producing magmas that formed these granites. The protoliths
for these must have been more potassic and less silicic. Nevertheless, at granulite-facies conditions, sodic TTGs will produce
significant quantities of broadly leucogranodioritic melt that will be more potassic than the protoliths. Upward abstraction
of this melt would result in some LILE depletion of the terrane. Younger K-rich magmatism is unlikely to represent recycling
of TTG crust on its own, and it seems most likely that evolved crustal rocks and/or highly enriched mantle must be involved.

The assessment of building damage caused by liquefaction-induced ground deformations requires the definition of building capacity and vulnerability as a function of the demand, as well as damage scales to describe the state of the damaged building. This paper presents a framework for resolving these issues within the context of earthquake loss estimations, where large variations in building stock and ground conditions must be considered. The principal modes of building response to both uniform and differential ground movements are discussed and the uncertainties in their evaluation are highlighted. A unified damage scale is proposed for use in both reconnaissance and assessment of all modes of building damage, including ‘rigid body’ response of structures on stiff foundations to uniform or differential ground movements. The interaction of ground shaking and liquefaction in the context of induced structural damage is also briefly considered. The paper raises important aspects of earthquake loss estimations in regions of liquefaction potential, which remain relatively poorly defined at present. 相似文献

Modelling Seismic Hazard in Earthquake Loss Models with Spatially Distributed Exposure 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The prediction of possible future losses from earthquakes, which in many cases affect structures that are spatially distributed over a wide area, is of importance to national authorities, local governments, and the insurance and reinsurance industries. Generally, it is necessary to estimate the effects of many, or even all, potential earthquake scenarios that could impact upon these urban areas. In such cases, the purpose of the loss calculations is to estimate the annual frequency of exceedance (or the return period) of different levels of loss due to earthquakes: so-called loss exceedance curves. An attractive option for generating loss exceedance curves is to perform independent probabilistic seismic hazard assessment calculations at several locations simultaneously and to combine the losses at each site for each annual frequency of exceedance. An alternative method involves the use of multiple earthquake scenarios to generate ground motions at all sites of interest, defined through Monte–Carlo simulations based on the seismicity model. The latter procedure is conceptually sounder but considerably more time-consuming. Both procedures are applied to a case study loss model and the loss exceedance curves and average annual losses are compared to ascertain the influence of using a more theoretically robust, though computationally intensive, procedure to represent the seismic hazard in loss modelling.An erratum to this article can be found at 相似文献

Hopanoids bound into the insoluble organic matter (kerogen) of Recent sediments from a freshwater lake (Priest Pot) and an anoxic sulphidic fjord (Framvaren) were released by hydropyrolysis and examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bound hopanoids are present in high concentration (190-1400 μg/g TOC) and represent 22 to 86% of the total analysable hopanoids (i.e., bound and solvent-soluble), this proportion increasing with depth in Framvaren Fjord. The hopanes generated by hydropyrolysis contain higher amounts of the C35, C32, and C30 homologues, reflecting the carbon number distribution of the bound hopanoids and indicating that both biohopanoids (C30 and C35) and their diagenetic products (dominated by C32) are incorporated into the kerogen on a timescale of only 0 to 350 years. Sequential (multiple temperature) hydropyrolysis experiments gave an indication of the relative strengths of bonds being cleaved in association with hopane generation: The hopanoids of a sediment from Priest Pot are almost entirely bound by strong covalent bonds, interpreted to be mainly ether linkages, whilst a Framvaren sediment contains hopanoids that are bound by a mixture of weak di-/polysulphide linkages and stronger ether bonds. The island of St. Paul in the Indian Ocean is located on the axis of the southeastern branch of the Indian Ocean Rise, as is the similar volcano of Amsterdam, 80 km to the north. Both volcanoes and possibly part of the local ridge are formed of a high-alumina plagioclase tholeiite making this a distinctive volcanic province. Lavas with Al2O2 contents of 12 to 22% are directly related by plagioclase fractionation. Residual rocks are a distinctive low silica, low alumina, potassic andesite with andesine and even olligoclase feldspar. Parallel lines of evolution exist in the sea floor plagioclase tholeiites, which differ only in slightly lower tenor of Sr and potassium group elements, and in the Steens Mountain tholeiites of Oregon, which differ in their significantly higher Sr and K group elements 相似文献

As climate change may modify the hydrological cycle significantly, understanding the impact on river flow is important because it affects long‐term water resources planning. Here, we describe a high‐resolution British assessment of changes in river flows in the 2050s under 11 different realisations of HadRM3. In winter, river flows may either increase or decrease, with a wide range of possible decreases in summer flow.
