Abstract On the island of Mustique, fresh and propylitized olivine–plagioclase–clinopyroxene basalt, plagioclase–clinopyroxene–orthopyroxene and plagioclase–clinopyroxene–amphibole andesite lavas and minor intrusions are interbedded with Oligocene pyroclastic and epiclastic rocks. Chemical data show that two isotopically identical, but chemically different, suites of lava are present: (i) the OPXS (87Sr/86Sr 0.70403–0.70454; 143Nd/144Nd 0.512952–0.512986; δ18Ocpx 5.49 and 5.61), comprising basalts and orthopyroxene‐bearing andesites; and (ii) the AMPHS (87Sr/86Sr 0.70401–0.70457; 143Nd/144Nd 0.512981–0.513037; δ18Ocpx 5.54), made up of basalts and amphibole‐bearing andesites. The OPXS has higher contents of TiO2, P2O5, light rare earth elements, Sm, Pb, Th, U, Zr, Y and Nb, and higher La/Yb ratios than the AMPHS. The isotopic data suggest that both suites formed from melts derived from the same subduction‐modified depleted mantle source as the volcanic rocks of nearby St Vincent and Bequia, and the northern islands of the Lesser Antilles Arc. The immobile trace element contents, and La/Yb ratios, of the OPXS are indicative of ~10% partial melting of the source, whereas those of the AMPHS are indicative of ~25% partial melting. The within‐suite chemical variation of the OPXS is consistent with ~45% fractional crystallization of its intratelluric mineral assemblages, and that of the AMPHS is consistent with the removal of ~65% of its intratelluric assemblages. Experimental evidence suggests that both suites of basalt crystallized at pressures <8 kbar from melts containing 1–2 wt% water. After extensive fractional crystallization, the andesites crystallized at pressures between approximately 5 and 2 kbar. The OPXS magmas appear to have lost more of their water content than the AMPHS magmas. Thus, the OPXS andesites formed from melts with an estimated water content of 2–3 wt%, whereas the AMPHS andesites formed from melts containing at least 4.5 wt% water.  相似文献

Diamonds from the Kankan area in Guinea formed over a large depth profile beginning within the cratonic mantle lithosphere and extending through the asthenosphere and transition zone into the lower mantle. The carbon isotopic composition, the concentration of nitrogen impurities and the nitrogen aggregation level of diamonds representing this entire depth range have been determined. Peridotitic and eclogitic diamonds of lithospheric origin from Kankan have carbon isotopic compositions ('13C: peridotitic -5.4 to -2.2‰; eclogitic -19.7 to -0.7‰) and nitrogen characteristics (N: peridotitic 17-648 atomic ppm; eclogitic 0-1,313 atomic ppm; aggregation from IaA to IaB) which are generally typical for diamonds of these two suites worldwide. Geothermobarometry of peridotitic and eclogitic inclusion parageneses (worldwide sources) indicates that both suites formed under very similar conditions within the cratonic lithosphere, which is not consistent with a derivation of diamonds with light carbon isotopic composition from subducted organic matter within subducting oceanic slabs. Diamonds containing majorite garnet inclusions fall to the isotopically heavy side ('13C: -3.1‰ to +0.9‰) of the worldwide diamond population. Nitrogen contents are low (0-126 atomic ppm) and one of the two nitrogen-bearing diamonds shows such a low level of nitrogen aggregation (30% B-centre) that it cannot have been exposed to ambient temperatures of the transition zone (̿,400 °C) for more than 0.2 Ma. This suggests rapid upward transport and formation of some Kankan diamonds pene-contemporaneous to Cretaceous kimberlite activity. Similar to these diamonds from the asthenosphere and the transition zone, lower mantle diamonds show a small shift towards isotopic heavy compositions (-6.6 to -0.5‰, mode at -3.5‰). As already observed for other mines, the nitrogen contents of lower mantle diamonds were below detection (using FTIRS). The mutual shift of sublithospheric diamonds towards isotopic heavier compositions suggests a common carbon source, which may have inherited an isotopic heavy composition from a component consisting of subducted carbonates.  相似文献

For the past 2000 Ma, the temperature of the Earth's surface has fluctuated around a mean similar to that of today, although individual locations have undergone long-term changes of ∼30°C at different times in different places. Water bodies absorb at least five times as much solar radiation as land surfaces, and ocean currents transport the excess heat absorbed in the tropics towards the poles. Changes in the distribution of land and sea due to plate tectonics explain the major temperature fluctuations (>25°C) around the globe in the last 350 Ma, and are first-order controls. Large-scale changes in ocean currents and thermohaline circulations are probably second-order controls (15–25°C). The Milankovitch orbital cycles are third-order controls producing variations in air temperature of the order of 10°C, while massive volcanic eruptions and changes in carbon dioxide are amongst the fourth-order controls producing minor perturbations (<5°C). The major climatic fluctuations are continuous but regional in effect and not global. Extraterrestrial factors may not cause major changes in climate when viewed from a geological perspective.  相似文献

We consider the concept of a quasi-axisymmetric circulation to explore the global scale dynamics of planetary atmospheres. The momentum and energy transport processes in the smaller scales are formulated in terms of anisotropic eddy diffusion. In the early work of Williams and Robinson (1973) these concepts have been introduced to describe the Jovian circulation. Our study differs in that we adopt a spectral model (with vector spherical harmonics) and consider a linear system; we are also examining a different parameter regime. The troposphere of Jupiter is assumed to be weakly convectively unstable, and the circulation is driven by the fundamental component of solar differential heating with a broad maximum at the equator. Mode coupling arising from the Coriolis action is considered in self consistent form, and momentum and energy are allowed to cascade from lower to higher order modes. With a limited number of spherical harmonics, up to order 40, and with homogeneous boundary conditions, the conservation equations are integrated between the 25 and 10–5 bar pressure levels. In addition, a simplified single layer model is discussed which, even though heuristic in nature, elucidates and complements the numerical results. Our analysis leads to the following conclusions: (a) For a negative stability, S 0 = T 0/r + , the energy transports arising from large scale advection by the meridional circulation can amplify the response to the external heating. This crucially depends on the latitudinal structure of the circulation, so that banded wind fields with equatorial zonal jets are preferentially excited. (b) With a negative stability of order S 0 ~ – 10–6 K cm–1, the computed number of positive (and negative) zonal jets is similar to that observed on Jupiter. (c) The observed magnitudes in the zonal wind velocities require that the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient is of the order K r ~ 3 × 105 cm2 s–1, which in turn is consistent with the observed outward flux of energy from the planetary interior (F K r S 0 ); this diffusion rate is also of the right order of magnitude to obey mixing length theory. (d) The ratio between the horizontal and vertical eddy diffusion coefficients (relative mixing factor) is of critical importance. If it is too large ( 105), differential rotation or alternating zonal jets cannot be maintained; if it is too small ( 104), the equator tends to corotate. The intermediate value of order R ~ 5 × 104 is again consistent with mixing length theory. (e) With the above constraints on the transport coefficients, the flow is quasigeostrophic. (f) The meridional circulation is multicellular and of the Ferrel-Thomson type. It is consistent with the observed cloud striations in the Jovian atmosphere. (g) In the stable stratosphere at higher altitudes the fundamental component, directly driven by the Sun, dominates. The circulation degenerates, and broad, positive zonal jets develop at middle latitudes, resembling the observed wind field in the visible cloud cover of the Venus atmosphere.Applied Research Corporation, Landover, Maryland, U.S.A.  相似文献

The Vredefort dome in the Kaapvaal Craton was formed as a result of the impact of a large meteorite at 2.02 Ga. The central core of Archaean granitic basement rocks is surrounded by a collar of uplifted and overturned strata of the Witwatersrand Supergroup, exposing a substantial depth section of the Archaean crust. Orthogneisses of the core show little variation in whole-rock δ 18O value, with the majority being between 8 and 10‰, with a mean of 9.2‰ (n = 35). Quartz and feldspar have per mil differences that are consistent with O-isotope equilibrium at high temperatures, suggesting minimal interaction with fluids during subsequent cooling. These data refute previous suggestions that the Outer Granite Gneiss (OGG) and Inlandsee Leucogranofels (ILG) of the core represent middle and lower crust, respectively. Granulite-facies greenstone remnants from the ILG have δ 18O values that are on average 1.5‰ higher than the ILG host rocks and are unlikely, therefore, to represent the residuum from the partial melting event that formed the host rock. Witwatersrand Supergroup sedimentary rocks of the collar, which were metamorphosed at greenschist-to amphibolite-facies conditions, generally have lower δ 18O values than the core rocks with a mean value for metapelites of 7.7‰ (n = 45). Overall, through an ∼20 km thick section of crust, there is a general increase in whole-rock δ 18O value with increasing depth. This is the reverse of what is normal in the crust, largely because the collar rocks have δ 18O values that are unusually low in comparison with metamorphosed sedimentary rocks worldwide. The collar rocks have δD values ranging from −35 to −115‰ (average −62‰, n = 29), which are consistent with interaction with water of meteoric origin, having a δD of about −25 to −45‰. We suggest that fluid movement through the collar rocks was enhanced by impact-induced secondary permeability in the dome structure. We present the results of extensive thermal-infrared observations of the C-type near-Earth Asteroid (1580) Betulia obtained in June 2002 with the 3-m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Betulia is a highly unusual object for which earlier radiometric observations, interpreted on the basis of simple thermal models, indicated a surface of high thermal inertia. A high thermal inertia implies a lack of thermally insulating regolith. Radiometric observations of other asteroids of comparable size indicate that regolith is present in nearly all cases. Knowledge of the surface thermal properties of small near-Earth asteroids is crucial for meaningful calculations of the Yarkovsky effect, which is invoked to explain the delivery of collisional fragments from the main belt into near-Earth orbits, and apparently has a significant influence on the orbital evolution of potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids. Furthermore, apart from being an indicator of the presence of thermally insulating regolith on the surface of an asteroid, the thermal inertia determines the magnitude of the diurnal temperature variation and is therefore of great importance in the design of instrumentation for lander missions to small asteroids. In the case of Betulia our database is sufficiently broad to allow the use of more sophisticated thermal models than were available for earlier radiometric observations. The measured fluxes have been fitted with thermal-model emission continua to determine the asteroid's size and geometric albedo, pv. Fits obtained with a new thermophysical model imply an effective diameter of 4.57±0.46 km and an albedo of 0.077±0.015 and indicate a moderate surface thermal inertia of around 180 J m−2 s−0.5 K−1. It is difficult to reconcile our results with earlier work, which indicate a larger diameter for Betulia and a high-thermal-inertia surface of bare rock.  相似文献

A unique and simple shaker table (shake table or shaking table), designed, constructed, and installed at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, has proven to be a valuable aid in testing and calibrating short period seismometers, as well as ocean bottom and ocean sub-bottom seismometer/tilt meter packages. It consists of a platform suspended in a stairwell by a single elastic cord (10 m extended length) driven by GeoSpace HS-10 geophones. Platform motion is monitored by orthogonal reference geophones and tilt meters. The relatively low natural periods of the platform, about 1.9 sec vertical and 6.5 sec horizontal, provide sufficient isolation from local vibrations that calibration can be made near operational amplitudes. Vertical or horizontal driver geophones can be driven by a commercial signal generator or white noise generator, or from magnetic tape output. The table can also be tilted with respect to the drivers to determine tilt tolerances and to calibrate tilt meters. A Hewlett-Packard 3582-A spectrum analyzer, used to analyze both reference and output signals, provides near real-time system cabibration and is an efficient means for investigating parasitic system resonances. A number of thermal springs with temperature up to 64°C are found in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The average δ13C value of gas (CO2+CH4) released at three springs is −22, which is consistent with an entirely biogenic origin for the C and supports previous investigations which showed that the springs are not associated with recent or nascent volcanic activity. Most springs issue from rocks of the Table Mountain Group, where faulted and highly jointed quartzites and sandstones of the Cape Fold Belt act as the main deep aquifer. The δD and δ18O values of the springs range from −46 to −18 and from −7.3 to −3.9, respectively. Although the thermal springs have isotope compositions that plot close to the local meteoric water line, their δD and δ18O values are significantly lower than ambient meteoric water or groundwater. It is, therefore, suggested that the recharge of most of the thermal springs is at a significantly higher altitude than the spring itself. The isotope ratios decrease wuth increasing distance from the west coast of South Africa, which is in part related to the continental effect. However, a negative correlation between the spring water temperature and the δ18O value in the thermal springs closest to the west coast indicates a progressive in increase in the average altitude of recharge away from the coast.  相似文献

We present the results of a series of experiments designed to probe the interactions between Al and the amorphous silica surface as a function of thermodynamic driving forces. The results from 27Al single pulse magic angle spinning (SP/MAS) and 27Al{1H} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) allow us to identify the reaction products and constrain their structure. In all cases, despite low Al and Si concentrations we observe the formation of metastable aluminosilicates. Results from low temperature experiments indicate that despite thermodynamic driving forces for the formation of gibbsite we observe the precipitation of separate octahedrally coordinated Al (Al[6]) and tetrahedrally coordinated Al (Al[4]) silicate phases. At higher temperatures the Al[4] silicate phase dominates the speciation. Structural models derived from the NMR data are also proposed, and the results are discussed as they relate to previous work on Al/Si cycling.  相似文献

Zooplankton sampling has been carried out by the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey since the 1930s enabling the study of long-term changes in plankton populations, the elucidation of seasonal patterns of abundance, and more recently providing zooplankton biomass estimates for ecosystem models. Data for zooplankton abundance collected by CPR tows in the Western English Channel (between 1988 and 1998) were compared to vertically integrated samples collected from station L4 off Plymouth, UK. Comparisons were made for locally abundant copepods (including Acartia, Calanus, Para/Pseudocalanus, Centropages, Oithona and Temora) collected by CPR and WP-2 nets. All dominant species recorded at L4 were also common to the CPR data. However, the position of the taxa in the two datasets was not equivalent. Seasonal cycles revealed by CPR data were significantly similar to those recorded throughout the water column at L4 for most taxa. However, absolute levels of abundance differed for the two datasets: abundances were underestimated by CPR samples when compared to those of vertically integrated samples by a factor of between 2 and 35, with the exception of Centropages. The differing mesh sizes (200 and 270 μm) of the WP-2 net and CPR mesh could only partially explain these differences in abundance, implying that the behaviour of individual taxa and their depth in the water column also influenced the abundance recorded.  相似文献
