Large-scale simulations of coupled flow in deformable porous media require iterative methods for solving the systems of linear
algebraic equations. Construction of efficient iterative methods is particularly challenging in problems with large jumps
in material properties, which is often the case in realistic geological applications, such as basin evolution at regional
scales. The success of iterative methods for such problems depends strongly on finding effective preconditioners with good
parallel scaling properties, which is the topic of the present paper. We present a parallel preconditioner for Biot’s equations
of coupled elasticity and fluid flow in porous media. The preconditioner is based on an approximation of the exact inverse
of the two-by-two block system arising from a finite element discretisation. The approximation relies on a highly scalable
approximation of the global Schur complement of the coefficient matrix, combined with generally available state-of-the-art
multilevel preconditioners for the individual blocks. This preconditioner is shown to be robust on problems with highly heterogeneous
material parameters. We investigate the weak and strong parallel scaling of this preconditioner on up to 512 processors and
demonstrate its ability on a realistic basin-scale problem in poroelasticity with over eight million tetrahedral elements. 相似文献

The prevailing view suggests that the Eemian interglacial on the European Plain was characterized by largely negligible geomorphic activity beyond the coastal areas. However, systematic geomorphological studies are sparse. Here we present a detailed reconstruction of Eemian to Early Weichselian landscape evolution in the vicinity of a small fingerlake on the northern margin of the Salzwedel Palaeolake in Lower Saxony (Germany). We apply a combination of seismics, sediment coring, pollen analysis and luminescence dating on a complex sequence of colluvial, paludal and lacustrine sediments. Results suggest two pronounced phases of geomorphic activity, directly before the onset and at the end of the Eemian period, with an intermediate period of pronounced landscape stability. The dynamic phases were largely driven by incomplete vegetation cover, but likely accentuated by fluvial incision in the neighbouring Elbe Valley. Furthermore, we discovered Neanderthal occupation at the lakeshore during Eemian pollen zone (PZ) E IV, which is chronologically in line with other known Eemian sites of central Europe. Our highly-resolved spatio-temporal data substantially contribute to the understanding of climate-induced geomorphic processes throughout and directly after the last interglacial period. The Target infrastructure has been specially built as a storage and compute infrastructure for the information systems derived from Astro-WISE. This infrastructure will be used by several applications that collaborate in the area of information systems within the Target project. It currently consists of 10 PB of storage and thousands of computational cores. The infrastructure has been constructed based on the requirements of the applications. The storage is controlled by the Global Parallel File System of IBM. This file system takes care of the required flexibility by combining storage hardware with different characteristics into a single file system. ABSTRACT Sedimentary cycles recorded in young sediments are often attributed to fluctuations of the Earth's climate on a 104 −106 -year scale which in turn is governed by periodic variations in solar insolation linked to orbital (Milankovitch) parameters. A spectacular example of cyclic stratal patterns in ancient deposits is the Middle Triassic Latemar carbonate platform (W Dolomites, N Italy). Based on spectral analyses from previous studies, a superimposition of precession (∼20 ka) and eccentricity (∼100 ka) controlled sea-level fluctuations has been suggested to account for the stacking hierarchy at Latemar, with ∼20 ka being assigned to each highest-order depositional cycle. Zircon U–Pb isotopic ages from volcanic-ash layers within the cyclic succession, corroborated by biostratigraphic constraints, suggest that the average time interval for every individual cycle is significantly smaller than the shortest Milankovitch period and therefore challenge previously published interpretations relating distinct spectral peaks to the above mentioned hierarchy. However, our new spectral data indicate that cyclicities resembling Milankovitch characteristics might exist, but on an entirely different scale. Our findings show that frequency spectra should only be interpreted in combination with robust age control. They also encourage the search for complementary mechanisms controlling carbonate deposition. 相似文献

In 1991 the second Gulf War lead to the largest oil spill in human history. Over 770 km of coastline from southern Kuwait to Abu Ali Island (Saudi Arabia) were smothered with oil and tar, erasing most of the local plant and animal communities. In the following year cyanobacteria colonized most of the oil polluted shores. In the study area at the Saudi Arabian Gulf coast north of Jubail three different processes were observed that followed the extensive formation of cyanobacterial mats. The first one is desiccation, cracking, and peeling of the cyanobacterial mats, thereby removing the uppermost part of the oiled sediment. The second is the resettlement of burrowing macrofauna like crabs and benthic animals such as gastropods, which outcompete the cyanobacteria again. The third process is further extensive growth of cyanobacteria building thick laminated mats. These layers, completely seal the surface and hence produce an anaerobic milieu which inhibits oil degradation. As long as such cyanobacteria exist, they will prevent microbial oil degradation as well as any resettlement by macrofauna. 相似文献

Ground water quality networks for monitoring phreatic drinking water wellfields are generally established for two main purposes: (1) the short-term safeguarding of public water supply and (2) signaling and predicting future quality changes in the extracted ground water. Six monitoring configurations with different well locations and different screen depths and lengths were evaluated using a numerical model of the 3D ground water flow toward a partially penetrating pumping well in a phreatic aquifer. Travel times and breakthrough curves for observation and pumping wells were used to judge the effectiveness of different design configurations for three monitoring objectives: (1) early warning; (2) prediction of future quality changes; and (3) evaluation of protection measures inside a protection zone. Effectiveness was tested for scenarios with advective transport, first-order degradation, and linear sorption. It is shown that the location and especially the depth of the observation wells should be carefully chosen, taking into account the residence time from the surface to the observation well, the residual transit times to the extraction well, and the transformation and retardation rates. Shallow monitoring was most functional for a variety of objectives and conditions. The larger the degradation rates or retardation, the shallower should the monitoring be for effective early warning and prediction of future ground water quality. The general approach followed in the current study is applicable for many geohydrological situations, tuning specific monitoring objectives with residence times and residual transit times obtained from a site-specific ground water flow model. 相似文献

The partially ionized local interstellar medium, before interacting with the heliospheric plasma on the upwind side, most probably undergoes an outer bow shock. After conversion into a sub-magnetosonic plasma flow, it then passes around the heliopause. While the ionized component at the bow shock undergoes abrupt changes of its dynamical properties, the neutral component first continues to flow downstream of the shock with its unperturbed properties. Consequently, the two fluids immediately after the bow shock passage are out of dynamical and thermodynamical equilibrium. Neutral atoms move with a higher bulk velocity and are cooler than the ions. Due to intensive local charge-exchange couplings between neutral atoms and protons these different properties tend to mix each other via momentum and energy exchanges. It turns out that the charge exchange period is shorter than the relaxation period. Hence the distribution functions cannot relax rapidly enough to their highest-entropy forms, i.e. shifted Maxwellians. Here we study the transport processes of newly injected ions in velocity space considering their quasi-linear and non-linear interactions with the ambient MHD turbulence in the plasma interface region. For that purpose we study the turbulence levels in the helio-sheath plasma region. We calculate the expected deviations from equilibrium distributions of ionic and atomic species in the outer heliospheric interface. It clearly turns out from these studies that non-relaxated non-equilibrium distribution functions have to be expected both for O-/H-ions and atoms in this region. This has inherent implications for the diagnostics of interstellar parameters, deduced from observations made further inwards from the interface region. 相似文献
