Urban Community Garden Agrodiversity and Cultural Identity in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania, U.S.

Considerable research has examined the social, cultural, economic, and community benefits of urban gardening. Few studies, however, have empirically assessed factors that influence urban community garden agrodiversity or its relationship to these dimensions of gardening. We conducted an interdisciplinary study of agrodiversity and cultural identity, based certain markers of identity, including how people see themselves with respect to race, ethnicity, or place of origin, in community gardens in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We conducted fifty‐six semistructured interviews with gardeners with different cultural identities in eight community gardens on their motivations for urban community gardening during 2014. We conducted plant inventories of the corresponding garden plots and found 104 cultivated edible and ornamental species and 28 varieties representing 34 families. We find that although gardens with culturally diverse gardeners did not have higher species richness, the cultural identity of the gardeners influenced species selection and reason for gardening. Further, the structure, design and species composition of garden plots reflected the identities of garden members. These finding have implications for the recent institutionalization of urban agriculture into city land policies in Philadelphia and other cities in North America.     

On lightning forecasting

Summary An exact forecasting of lightning is not possible so far. On the other hand situations occur to-day more often than in earlier times in which the best lightning protection is not sufficient to prevent harmful effects of lightning strokes. For this reason it should be attempted to use informations from the field of atmospheric electricity to improve the existing possibilities of lightning forecasting. These improvements are shortly pointed out, further experiments are under way.

Zusammenfassung Eine genaue Blitzvorhersage ist bis jetzt nicht möglich. Da aber Situationen, in denen auch eine gute Blitzschutzanlage schädliche Blitzwirkungen nicht mehr ausreichend verhindern kann, heute häufiger als früher vorkommen, muss wenigstens versucht werden, die luftelektrischen Erkenntnisse für eine Verbesserung der Vorhersage von Blitzschlägen zu verwenden. Hier gegebene Möglichkeiten werden erwähnt, weitere Versuche sind im Gange.

Résumé Nous sommes encore très éloignés de la possibilité de prédire exactement la foudre. Mais, dans la pratique, la nécessité d'améliorer les méthodes de prédiction, en usage jusqu'à maintenant, ne peut pas être désavouée, parce qu'il y a de plus en plus installations, opérations et instruments sensibles pour lesquelles aussi la meilleure protection contre la foudre ne serait plus suffisante. Des possibilités données pour ce but sont discutées, tandis que des nouveaux expériments on été mis en train par l'auteur.

Zusammenfassung Die Existenz des Leverrierit als selbständiges Mineral wird mineralogisch (A. Schüller) und chemisch (H. Grassmann) nachgewiesen. Zusammenfassend seien die Eigenschaften des Leverrierit und des mit ihm verwechselten Kaolinit gegenübergestellt (Tabelle 4).

Summary A table for the North Sea is given containing the Consol position lines radiating from Bushmills and Stavanger. Taking the coordinates of two points of the bearing from the tables according to the number of dots or dashes observed, one can immediately plot a part of the position line near the DR position.
