The primary objectives of this work are to (1) improve the understanding of the prevailing stress distribution at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL) in SE Sweden by employing an integrated stress determination approach, and in order to accomplish this (2) extend the existing stress integration methodology denominated integrated stress determination method (ISDM; Cornet in Comprehensive Rock Engineering vol 3, Pergamon Press, Oxford, pp 413–432, 1993a). The new developments of the ISDM involve a 12-parameter representation of the regional stress field in the rock mass (i.e., the full stress tensor and its variation with depth) that is applicable to hydraulic stress data (sleeve fracturing, hydraulic fracturing, and hydraulic tests on pre-existing fractures), overcoring data (CSIR- and CSIRO-type of devices), and to combinations of hydraulic and overcoring stress data. For the latter case, the elastic parameters of the overcoring technique may be solved in situ by allowing the hydraulic stress data to constrain them. As a result, the problem then involves 14 model parameters. Results from the study show that the ISDM effectively improves the precision of the prevailing stress field determination and that it is especially powerful for identification of consistencies/inconsistencies in an existing data set. Indeed, this is the very basic premise and goal of stress integration; combine all available data to achieve as complete a characterization of the mechanical stress model as possible, and not to identify a solution that fits only loosely the maximum amount of stress data. 相似文献

Charcoal and fossil wood taken from palaeosols, sediments and artificial structures were analysed in order to evaluate the regional pedoanthracological potential and to obtain information on Holocene environmental changes, particularly on possible past tree occurrences in southern Tibet. This research was initiated by the question to what extent this area is influenced by past human impact. Even recent evaluations have perceived the present treeless desertic environment of southern Tibet as natural, and the previous Holocene palaeoenvironmental changes detected were predominantly interpreted to be climate-determined. The material analysed – comprising a total of 53 botanical spectra and 55 radiocarbon datings from 46 sampling sites (c. 3500–4700 m a.s.l.) – represents the largest systematically obtained data set of charcoal available from Tibet so far. 27 taxa were determined comprising trees, (dwarf-) shrubs and herbs as well as grasses. The predominant tree taxa were Juniperus, Hippophae, Salix and Betula. According to their present-day occurrence in the region, the genera Juniperus and Hippophae can be explicitly attributed to tree species. Further, less frequently detected tree taxa were Populus, Pinus, Quercus, Taxus and Pseudotsuga. Charcoal of Juniperus mainly occurred on southern exposures, whereas Betula was associated with northern exposures. In contrast, the (partly) phreatophytic taxa Hippophae and Salix showed no prevalent orientation. The distribution of radiocarbon ages on charcoal revealed a discontinuous record of burning events cumulating in the Late Holocene (c. 5700–0 cal BP). For southern Tibet, these results indicated a Late Holocene vegetation change from woodlands to the present desertic pastures. As agrarian economies in southern and south-eastern Tibet date back to c. 3700 and 5700 cal BP, respectively, and the present-day climate is suitable for tree growth up to c. 4600 m a.s.l., we concluded that the Late Holocene loss or thinning out of woodlands had been primarily caused by humans. 相似文献

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST), a large optical telescope having an aperture of 2.4 meters and a length of 8.8 meters, is being developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This telescope will be placed into earth orbit by the space shuttle. Astrometric observations with the HST are made using a Fine Guidance Sensor which is capable of measuring the position of one object relative to another with an accuracy of ±0.002 arcseconds. Atmospheric temperatures from the polar mesopause are deduced from spectrophotometric measurements of hydroxyl bands and lines in the night airglow made at 78°N during December and January 1980/81 and 1982/83. An overall mean temperature of 220 K is found with a range from 172 to 257 K in the daily mean values. Several warm periods lasting 3–6 days may be due to heat dissipated by gravity waves. One week of consistently low temperatures was apparently connected to a stratospheric warming. Both datasets show a warmer mean temperature later in January than for early and mid-December. The polar OH airglow seems to peak at or just above the mesopause. The data also indicate that the mesopause is situated at approx. 90 km with an upper temperature gradient of 1 K km?1 indicating a very shallow mesopause. A superposed epoch analysis of 19 consecutive 24-h periods reveals a semidiurnal variation in the temperature around winter solstice with an amplitude of 5 K. No diurnal variation of amplitude greater than 1 K is apparent. Average wind velocity deduced from the amplitude of the semidiurnal temperature variation is 9 m s?1. 相似文献

During December 1982, a novel Fabry-Perot interferometer—a Doppler Imaging System (DIS)— was used at Kiruna Geophysical Institute (KGI), Sweden (67.8°N, 21.2°E) to complement a series of coordinated observations of global thermospheric dynamics utilizing a number of conventional ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometers and the NASA Dynamics Explorer satellite. The DIS is an interferometer with two unique attributes : it has a luminosity or étendue more than one hundred times that of the conventional Fabry-Perot interferometer, and it is also capable of deducing a two-dimensional velocity field of a suitable line-emitting areal source by independently measuring the Doppler shift at a large number of points within the field of view. On 17 December 1982, a very large geomagnetic Storm Sudden Commencement (08.05 U.T.) preceded a major geomagnetic disturbance. During this disturbance, Northern Scandinavia was influenced by a strong eastward auroral electrojet for an extended period (10–19 U.T.). The DIS was able to observe the dynamical response of the upper thermosphere to this event in conjunction with a second Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) at KGI. Westward thermospheric winds of about 900 m s?1 occurred during the disturbance and, at the peak of the disturbance, the combined DIS and FPI observations indicate that the thermospheric flow was quite chaotic. Fluctuations of the order of ± 150 ms?1, associated with spatial scales of the order of 100 or 200 km occurred within the mean westward flow inside the 800 km diameter region observed from Kiruna. 相似文献

The location of galaxies in 377 rich Abell galaxy clusters is discussed. We compared the distributions of galaxies in the sample containing all galaxies with the sample compiled from the 20 brightest objects. Counts in circular sectors with angle width equal to 30î show isotropy. Only in the case of BM I clusters and the coordinate system related to the cluster major axis did we find anisotropic distributions. We investigated also the distributions of galaxy position angles within clusters exhibiting isotropy. The structure position angles for both samples have been studied as well. They appeared to be different. The difference in location of galaxies in the case of cD clusters, as well as the more elliptical shape and different position angles of samples containing bright galaxies is observed. 相似文献

Near-infrared photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic observations of Aurigae at two phases during the current eclipse are presented.
