 This article describes a case of contamination of a karstic aquifer by abandoning an underground mine exploiting sulphide ore body. To exploit the ore, the aquifer was drained and the water level declined about 230 m, drying up the spring that had drained the aquifer up to that moment. When the mining activity ceased, the piezometric level recovered and contaminated water began to flow out from a mine adit. The water is high in sulphates and dissolved Fe, although the pH is neutral. When this water reached the nearby creek, the fish population was eliminated, principally due to the presence of toxic metals and the precipitation of Fe hydroxides. The contamination originated in an area of the partially flooded mine rooms where the ore is in contact with both air and water. The acidity generated by pyrite oxidation is neutralized by calcite dissolution. Presently, the mine water is diverted to the old tailings pond which functions as an aerobic wetland. Six samples were collected from a section of Peoria Loess in Eustis, North America, for optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of quartz, and all except one (LV90) produced narrow dose distributions. A comparative study was conducted on this sample and on a ‘well-behaved’ sample (LV91), involving other dating methods and examination of the quartz OSL. These investigations revealed differences in the quartz OSL growth with dose, OSL response to thermal treatments and the range of components within the OSL signals. An ultra-fast component was found in LV90 that displayed a higher rate of sensitivity change than the fast component and this had a malign influence on the determination of the equivalent dose. The distinctive luminescence characteristics of LV90 imply either a change in wind dynamics and/or the source area for the silt.  相似文献

Data from six monitoring stations were combined with a soil‐water dynamics model (HYDRUS 1D) to achieve physically‐based estimates of shallow water‐table recharge in representative hydropedological settings of the glaciated midwestern U.S.A. Calibration involved inverse modeling that yielded optimized hydraulic parameters. Root mean square errors for modeled versus measured soil moisture contents were generally within 3% for all soil layers at the six study sites. The optimized models also accurately simulated recharge values that corresponded to observed water‐table fluctuations. Optimized parameter values were consistent with estimates from a pedotransfer function, lab analyses, and field experiments. Forward modeling indicated that shallow water‐table recharge in mid‐continent glacial settings is approximately 35% of precipitation, but interannual and monthly variability is significant. Soil parent materials and horizon characteristics influence recharge primarily through their control on Ks with clay‐rich till parent materials producing values as low as 16% and coarse‐grained outwash parent materials producing values as high as 58% of precipitation. During the three‐year study period, distinct seasonality of recharge was observed with most recharge occurring in the winter (seasonal mean of all sites was 66% of precipitation) and lesser but interannually stable amounts in the spring (44%), summer (13%), and autumn (16%). This research underscores the importance of incorporating pedological information into models of soil‐water dynamics and groundwater recharge. © 2015 The Authors. Magnetic properties of young rift basalts in the southern Red Sea are studied in detail. It is found that basalt samples dredged in the rift zone are characterized by a large spread in magnetic parameters. The magnetic properties of the basalts are shown to indicate a complex evolution of the Red Sea rift zone. Titanomagnetite grains of the basalts are mostly affected by single-phase oxidation processes and have preserved paleomagnetic information. However, basalts discovered near the rift axis yield evidence of multiphase oxidation of titanomagnetite grains, which is untypical of young oceanic basalts. These basalts have high Curie points and large values of the natural remanent magnetization and Koenigsberger parameter. The corresponding samples were taken in nontransform zones where rocks have experienced the action of significant tectonic forces and, moreover, anomalous geomagnetic field patterns correlate with the position of these zones. Using the magnetic properties of the basalts, the northern segment of the rift axis is relocated.  相似文献

A simple vibrational relaxation model which reproduces the observed altitude integrated vibrational distribution of the Herzberg I bands in the nightglow is used to derive the altitude profiles of the individual vibrational levels at 1 km intervals in the 85–115 km height range. The possible errors associated with using rocket-borne photometer measurements of a limited number of bands in the O2(A3Σu+?X3Σg?) system to infer the total Herzberg I emission profile are assessed.  相似文献

The Late Devensian (<20 ka BP) glacial geology of the Irish Sea Basin (4000 km2) is an event stratigraphy recording the entry of marine waters into a glacio-isostatically-depressed basin, and the rapid retreat of the Irish Sea Glacier as a tidewater ice margin. Marine limits occur up to 140 m O.D. Across much of the central basin, the ice margin was uncoupled from its bed exposing a subglacially-scoured topography to glaciomarine processes. The Irish Sea Glacier was a major drainage conduit of the last British Ice Sheet; calving of the marine ice margin resulted in fast flow (surging) of ice streams recorded by drumlin fields around the northern basin margin and tunnel valleys. Rapid evacuation of the basin may have stranded large areas of dead ice in peripheral zones (e.g. Cheshire/Shropshire Lowlands) and initiated the collapse of the ice sheet.Thick wedges of ice-contact glaciomarine sediments were deposited during ice retreat as morainal bank complexes by successive tidewater ice margins stabilized at pinning points around the Irish Sea coast. Where morainal banks occur on the seaward side of drumlin swarms there is a clear sequential relationship between rapid ice loss from calving ice margins, the development of fast flowing ice streams, drumlinization and the pumping of subglacial sediment to tidewater. Raised delta complexes are locally associated with marine limits along the high relief coastal margins of Wales, east central Ireland, and the Lake District. Associated valley infill complexes record downslope resedimentation of heterogenous sediments into the marine environment during ice retreat. Co-eval offshore deposits are represented by well-stratified glaciomarine complexes that infill a subglacially-scoured topography that shows networks of tunnel valleys. Glaciomarine mud drapes occur well to the south of the maximum limit of grounded ice in the basin (e.g. North Devon, Scilly Islands, Southern Ireland). The age of these distal sediments, previously mapped as pre-Devensian tills, is constrained by amino acid ratios.Basin rebound following deglaciation was rapid, with over 100 m recovery in 3 ka, and was followed by a low marine still stand. Peat, accumulating in offshore areas now as much as 55 m below sea level has been drowned by the postglacial eustatic rise in sea level.The glacio-sedimentary model identified in this paper, involving rapid ice retreat and related sedimentation triggered by rising relative sea level, suggests that isotatic downwarping is an important mechanism for deglaciating continental shelves.  相似文献

Traditionally the Chinese South Tianshan has been regarded as a late Paleozoic orogenic belt. However, little is known about the early Paleozoic tectonic architecture of the region. This paper presents the first evidence of Cambrian–Ordovician MORB-type basalts and adakitic diorites on the southern margin of the Yili plate in China. Basalts from Xiate in southwestern Tianshan show a typical transitional (T-) MORB and ferrobasalt composition, which indicate a formation at a propagating spreading ridge. The basalts give a weighted mean 206Pb/238U crystallization age of 516.3 ± 7.4 Ma by SHRIMP U–Pb zircon dating and have experienced contact metamorphism due to the intrusion of a dioritic pluton. The dioritic pluton has a weighted mean 206Pb/238U crystallization age of 470 ± 12 Ma and geochemical characteristics resembling that of adakitic rocks. The pluton is considered to have been formed by partial melting of garnet amphibolites from thickened lower crust in arc or continental collision settings. The basalts and diorites are considered to outline the eastern extension of the early Paleozoic suture zone, the Nikolaev Line, which stretches east–west for hundreds of kilometers between the Northern Tianshan and Central Tianshan terranes of Kyrgyzstan. Our findings substantiate that the Yili and Central Tianshan plates were separated by the early Paleozoic Terskey ocean. The Terskey ocean probably closed during the early stage of the late Ordovician (Lomize et al. in Geotectonics 31(6):463–482, 1997), resulting in the final amalgamation of the Yili and Central Tianshan plates. Consequently, an early Paleozoic suture zone is documented in the Chinese Tianshan region, which is most likely represented by the North Nalati fault.  相似文献

Three magmatic units (Grande Cascade pyroclastic deposits, Grande Cascade lava flow, Durbise nuée ardente deposits) from the Quaternary volcano Sancy (Mont-Dore area, Auvergne, France) show textural evidences of magma mixing between a silica undersaturated basic magma (alkali basalt and hawaiite) and an acid magma (quartz-bearing trachyte). Three kinds of mixed rock types are described: basic inclusions within an acid host, « emulsified rocks » showing infracentimetric basic globules disseminated within an acid groundmass, and « banded rocks » in which elongated acid and basic zones alternate. The chemical compositions of mixed rocks plot systematically onto linear trends in petrographic diagrams. Microprobe analyses of the groundmass show similar linear variations between basic and acid end-members. The mineralogical associations of these mixed rocks are highly complex and present many disequilibrium features. Olivine is stable in the basic component and becomes rimmed by orthopyroxene in the acid one. Zoning patterns of feldspars are complex. Clinopyroxene, kaersutite and phlogopite phenocrysts have increasing component Mg contents from core to rim both in the basic and the acid. Titanomagnetite and hemoilmenite phenocrysts were equilibrated at 900-800° C under high oxygen fugacities.Mixing results primarily from a mechanical disintegration of partly liquid basic inclusions within their acid host, and also from a mechanical transfer of phenocrysts from one component to the other, in which they often remain surrounded by a coating of their original groundmass. Chemical data on the groundmass indicates that some « true » hybridization between coexisting acid and basic liquids may also have occurred. The extent of mixing is controlled by the type of emplacement. For pyroclastic deposits a chemical gap exists between basic inclusions and their acid hosts; in contrast, mechanical mixing was enhanced during the emplacement of the viscous Grande Cascade lava flow, and complete transitions occur between basic and acid components. The two end-members are genetically associated, the latter deriving from the former by crystal fractionation. Mixing appears as a late-stage phenomenon in the petrogenetic history of the Mont-Dore series; in the case of the Grande Cascade lava flow, its extent is primarily dependent on emplacement modalities.  相似文献
