To determine the relationship between transient coronal (soft X-ray or EUV) sigmoids and erupting flux ropes, we analyse four events in which a transient sigmoid could be associated with a filament whose apex rotates upon eruption and two further events in which the two phenomena were spatially but not temporally coincident. We find the helicity sign of the erupting field and the direction of filament rotation to be consistent with the conversion of twist into writhe under the ideal MHD constraint of helicity conservation, thus supporting our assumption of flux rope topology for the rising filament. For positive (negative) helicity the filament apex rotates clockwise (counterclockwise), consistent with the flux rope taking on a reverse (forward) S shape, which is opposite to that observed for the sigmoid. This result is incompatible with two models for sigmoid formation: one identifying sigmoids with upward arching kink-unstable flux ropes and one identifying sigmoids with a current layer between two oppositely sheared arcades. We find instead that the observations agree well with the model by Titov and Démoulin (Astron. Astrophys. 351, 707, 1999), which identifies transient sigmoids with steepened current layers below rising flux ropes.  相似文献

We present SCUBA 850-μm, JCMT  CO( J =2→1)  , B -band imaging and VLA H  i observations of the NGC 7465/4/3 group of galaxies. The 850-μm emission associated with NGC 7465 extends to at least ∼2 R 25 and is well correlated with the H  i . We investigate a range of possible mechanisms by which dust beyond R 25 may be heated to give the observed extended submillimetre emission. By modelling the dust heating by stars in two extreme geometries, we fail to find any reasonable star formation scenario that is consistent with both the 850-μm and optical data. Furthermore, we do not detect any  CO( J =2→1)  emission coincident with the extended dust and atomic gas as would be expected if significant star formation were occurring. We show that shock-heating of dust via cloud–cloud collisions in the stripped interstellar medium of NGC 7465 could be sufficient to explain the extended 850-μm emission and lack of optical emission in the stripped gas, and suggest that cloud–cloud collisions may be an important dust heating mechanism in gas-rich systems.  相似文献

The role of polymetallic melts in scavenging ore components has recently been highlighted in the context of fluid-poor metamorphosed ore deposits. In contrast, the role of polymetallic melts in systems dominated by hydrothermal fluids remains poorly understood. Using a simple Au-Bi model system, we explored experimentally whether such polymetallic melts can precipitate directly from a hydrothermal fluid, and investigated the ability of these melts to scavenge Au from the solution. The experiments were conducted in custom-built flow-through reactors, designed to reproduce a hydrothermal system where melt components are dissolved at one stage along the flow path (e.g., Bi was dissolved by placing Bi-minerals along the fluid path), whereas melt precipitation was caused further along the flow path by fluid-rock interaction. Bi-rich melts were readily obtained by reaction with pyrrhotite, graphite or amorphous FeS. When Au was added to the system, Bi-Au melts with compositions consistent with the Au-Bi phase diagram were obtained. In the case of fluid reaction with pyrrhotite, epitaxial replacement of pyrrhotite by magnetite was observed, with textures consistent with an interface-coupled dissolution-reprecipitation reaction (ICDRR). In this case, the metallic melt precipitated as blebs that were localized at the replacement front or within the porous magnetite.Direct fractionation of Bi-Au melts from a hydrothermal fluid, or precipitation of a Bi-melt followed by partitioning of Au from ambient fluid, offer new pathways to the enrichment of minor ore components such as Au, without requiring fluid saturation with respect to a Au mineral. This mechanism can explain the strong geochemical affinity recognized between Au and low-melting point chalcophile elements such as Bi in many gold deposits. Examples of deposits where such a model may be applicable include orogenic gold deposits and gold skarns. Contrary to models involving migration of polymetallic melts to explain element remobilization, only small quantities (ppm) of polymetallic melts are required to affect the Au endowment of a deposit via interaction with a hydrothermal fluid. The experiments also show that micro-environments can play a critical role in controlling melt occurrences. For example, reaction fronts developing via ICDR reactions can promote melt formation as observed during the replacement of pyrrhotite by magnetite. The associated transient porosity creates space for the melt and promotes melt-fluid exchanges whereas the reaction front provides local geochemical conditions favorable to melt precipitation (e.g., reduced, low aH2S(aq), and catalytic surface).  相似文献

Hydrogen‐ and oxygen‐isotope analyses of biotite (19), sericite (8), chlorite (2), quartz (27), and total rocks (37) from the Panguna porphyry‐copper deposit on Bougainville Island, place important constraints on the origin of the hydrothermal fluids responsible for mineralization and alteration in the mine region. Early high‐temperature amphibole‐magnetite alteration resulted from magmatic‐hydrothermal fluids. Several lines of evidence indicate 500°C as a realistic average temperature for mineralization, development of quartz veins, and biotitization processes. On the basis of mineral isotope data, responsible fluids could represent either 18O‐shifted ground‐waters or magmatic‐hydrothermal fluids at submagmatic temperatures. Independent evidence, as well as total‐rock 18O data, support the magmatic‐hydrothermal model.

Late‐stage sericitization processes probably resulted from fluids produced by 18O shifting of groundwaters during the evolution of the propylitic zone. Outermost quartz veins and biotitization conceivably resulted from fluids similar to those that caused sericitization, indicating that some interaction between relatively cool, 18O‐poor meteoric waters and the ore fluids occurred near the margins of the deposit. The origin of the chlorite‐sericite alteration cannot be resolved solely by isotope studies.  相似文献

Zinc mineralization in Devonian carbonates of the Lennard Shelf, northern Canning Basin is similar in many respects to that of the Mississippi Valley‐type including estimated minimum temperatures of sulphide precipitation between 70 and 110°C. Apparent apatite fission track ages for Precambrian granitic basement and for detrital apatites in Devonian carbonates in and near Pb‐Zn mineralization generally range between 260 and 340 Ma, with Precambrian samples tending to have slightly older apatite fission track ages than the Devonian carbonates. These apparent ages are younger than the stratigraphic age of the material analysed, indicating that appreciable annealing of fission tracks in apatite has occurred in post‐Devonian times. Mean horizontal confined track lengths are 12–13 μm for most samples and preclude attaching any ‘event’ significance to the fission track ages. Studies of well sequences (Grevillea 1 and Kennedia 1) indicate a period of rapid uplift in the area during the Late Triassic/Early Jurassic. Assuming a constant geothermal gradient of 30°C/km, approximately 1.5 km of uplift and erosion is estimated. Immediate thermal effects related to Miocene lamproite intrusion into Precambrian basement appear to be restricted to within 200 m of the contact zone.

For outcropping Devonian carbonates, a thermal history is proposed involving burial in the Late Palaeozoic/Early Mesozoic, followed by uplift and cooling from peak temperatures around 70–80°C in mid‐Mesozoic times. With reference to this period of burial, Pb‐Zn occurrences represent thermal anomalies when reported fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures are compared with the estimated peak temperatures. However the possibility of a phase of higher temperatures during the Late Devonian/ Early Carboniferous is suggested by the apatite fission track results, in which case sulphide mineralization may reflect ambient regional temperatures if it formed at that time. The absence of enhanced annealing effects in detrital apatites proximal to Pb‐Zn deposits suggests that either sulphide mineralization preceded or accompanied peak regional temperatures suspected during the Late Devonian/Early Carboniferous, or that the mineralizing episodes were of too short a duration to significantly anneal fission tracks in apatite.  相似文献

After a pelagic larval phase, infaunal bivalves undergo metamorphosis and transition to the underlying sediments to begin the benthic stage of their life history, where they explore and then either accept or reject sediments. Although the settlement cues used by juvenile infaunal bivalves are poorly understood, here we provide evidence that carbonate saturation state is a significant chemical cue in both direct observation laboratory studies and field manipulations. In the laboratory, plantigrade-stage Mercenaria mercenaria (200 μm shell height) showed a significant positive relationship between percent burrowed and Ωaragonite, with an increasing probability of settlement with increasing saturation state. In the field, we increased bivalve recruitment by a factor of three in a 30-day field study by raising the pH (~0.3) and saturation state of surface sediments by buffering sediments with crushed shell (CaCO3). The susceptibility of infaunal bivalves to dissolution mortality and the tight coupling of other sedimentary biogeochemical processes with carbonate dynamics suggest that mineral thermodynamics may be an overarching cue new settlers are responding to.  相似文献

Portland, Oregon, is renowned as a paradigmatic “sustainable city.” Yet, despite popular conceptions of the city as a progressive ecotopia and the accolades of planners seeking to emulate its innovations, Portland’s sustainability successes are inequitably distributed. Drawing on census data, popular media, newspaper archives, city planning documents, and secondary source histories, we attempt to elucidate the structural origins of Portland’s “uneven development,” exploring how and why the urban core of this paragon of sustainability has become more White and affluent while its outer eastside has become more diverse and poor. We explain how a “sustainability fix”—in this case, green investment in the city’s core—ultimately contributed to the demarcation of racialized poverty along 82nd Avenue, a major north–south arterial marking the boundary of East Portland. Our account of structural processes taking place at multiple scales contributes to a growing body of literature on eco-gentrification and displacement and inner-ring suburban change while empirically demonstrating how Portland’s advances in sustainability have come at the cost of East Portland’s devaluation. Our “30,000 foot” perspective reveals systemic patterns that might then guide more fine-grained analyses of particular political-socio-cultural processes, while providing cautionary insights into current efforts to extend the city’s sustainability initiatives using the same green development model.  相似文献
