Abstract— This study serves as a proof‐of‐concept for the technique of using visible‐near infrared (VNIR), short‐wavelength infrared (SWIR), and thermal infrared (TIR) spectroscopic observations to map impact‐exposed subsurface lithologies and stratigraphy on Earth or Mars. The topmost layer, three subsurface layers and undisturbed outcrops of the target sequence exposed just 10 km to the northeast of the 23 km diameter Haughton impact structure (Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada) were mapped as distinct spectral units using Landsat 7 ETM+ (VNIR/SWIR) and ASTER (VNIR/SWIR/TIR) multispectral images. Spectral mapping was accomplished by using standard image contrast‐stretching algorithms. Both spectral matching and deconvolution algorithms were applied to image‐derived ASTER TIR emissivity spectra using spectra from a library of laboratory‐measured spectra of minerals (Arizona State University) and whole‐rocks (Ward's). These identifications were made without the use of a priori knowledge from the field (i.e., a “blind” analysis). The results from this analysis suggest a sequence of dolomitic rock (in the crater rim), limestone (wall), gypsum‐rich carbonate (floor), and limestone again (central uplift). These matched compositions agree with the lithologic units and the pre‐impact stratigraphic sequence as mapped during recent field studies of the Haughton impact structure by Osinski et al. (2005a). Further conformation of the identity of image‐derived spectra was confirmed by matching these spectra with laboratory‐measured spectra of samples collected from Haughton. The results from the “blind” remote sensing methods used here suggest that these techniques can also be used to understand subsurface lithologies on Mars, where ground truth knowledge may not be generally available.  相似文献

Stream temperature is a complex function of energy inputs including solar radiation and latent and sensible heat transfer. In streams where groundwater inputs are significant, energy input through advection can also be an important control on stream temperature. For an individual stream reach, models of stream temperature can take advantage of direct measurement or estimation of these energy inputs for a given river channel environment. Understanding spatial patterns of stream temperature at a landscape scale requires predicting how this environment varies through space, and under different atmospheric conditions. At the landscape scale, air temperature is often used as a surrogate for the dominant controls on stream temperature. In this study we show that, in regions where groundwater inputs are key controls and the degree of groundwater input varies in space, air temperature alone is unlikely to explain within-landscape stream temperature patterns. We illustrate how a geologic template can offer insight into landscape-scale patterns of stream temperature and its predictability from air temperature relationships. We focus on variation in stream temperature within headwater streams within the McKenzie River basin in western Oregon. In this region, as in other areas of the Pacific Northwest, fish sensitivity to summer stream temperatures continues to be a pressing environmental issue. We show that, within the McKenzie, streams which are sourced from deeper groundwater reservoirs versus shallow subsurface flow systems have distinct summer temperature regimes. Groundwater streams are colder, less variable and less sensitive to air temperature variation. We use these results from the western Oregon Cascade hydroclimatic regime to illustrate a conceptual framework for developing regional-scale indicators of stream temperature variation that considers the underlying geologic controls on spatial variation, and the relative roles played by energy and water inputs. Measurements of velocity profiles, bathymetry, and surface sediment characteristics across eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) meadows yielded information on community development processes and functional attributes of this ecosystem. Height/length ratios of the meadows were positively correlated with tidal current velocity. Low, medium, and high current regimes were separated by surface current velocities of approximately 50 and 90 cm s?1. Z. marina can tolerate approximately 120–150 cm/sec current velocities in the areas studied. Per cent silt-clay and organic matter content of the surface sediments are negatively associated with shear velocity, suggesting that meadows in high current areas are sources while meadows in low current areas are sinks of autochthonous detritus. Current velocity maintains seagrass meadows at different equilibrium levels (relative climaxes). We theorize these different equilibrium levels provide unequal habitat utilization potentials for the associated faunal community.  相似文献

The oblateness of the Martian upper atmosphere was determined from analysis of photoelectric observations of the 8 April 1976 occultation of ε Geminorum by Mars at seven stations. The oblatness is 0.0096 ± 0.0023, consistent with a mean equator-to-pole temperature difference in excess of ~ 50°K, vertically averaged from the surface to the occulation altitude of ~70 km. The astrometric solution provides precise determination of the occultation path relative to the Martian shadow, and absolute vertical alignment of upper atmospheric temperature profiles obtained by inversion of occultation light curves. The observations can be compared directly with models of atmospheric tides computed for the conditions at the suboccultation regions on Mars.  相似文献

If isolated atoms are accelerated by a point source of radiation with a power law spectrum and an intensity sufficiently large that radiation pressure dominates other forces, and if both acceleration and photoionization of the ions are considered, the resulting spectrum of escape velocities is independent of the intensity of the radiation, depending only on the power law index. Measurements of the properties of Pi 2 pulsations along a magnetic meridian at high latitudes during a number of substorms have been analyzed for their relationship to the auroral electrojet. It is found that the maximum Pi 2 pulsation amplitudes are closely associated with the instantaneous position of the electrojet. That is, the average pulsation amplitude in the Pi 2 band as well as the amplitudes of pulsations at specific frequencies in the band have maximum amplitudes at latitudes close to the instantaneous electrojet location. Stations equatorward of the electrojet tend to observe a classical Pi 2 waveform concurrent with the onset of the substorm electrojet. Stations near the electrojet observe a broad spectrum of pulsations indicating a multiplicity of sources. Stations poleward of the initial electrojet position see little pulsation activity until the electrojet moves overhead. The appearance of large amplitude Pi 2 pulsations at a station which was poleward of the electrojet at the onset of a substorm appears to be coincident with the arrival of the poleward border of the electrojet.  相似文献

Summary. In paper I of this series (Hughes & Rostoker) we have presented a composite model three-dimensional current system whose magnetic perturbation pattern is in good agreement with that observed at high latitudes during periods of moderate magnetospheric activity. In this paper we extend the model current system to demonstrate its ability to reproduce the magnetic perturbation pattern associated with the magnetospheric substorms. In agreement with previous workers, we find it necessary to include a region of intense equatorward current flow at the western edge of the westward travelling surge. For the particular substorm event presented in this paper, we find that the main eastward and westward electrojets intensified slightly before the appearance of the surge form, and we are able to evaluate quantitatively the amount of change involved.  相似文献

Substorm onsets and intensifications are accompanied on a one-to-one basis by a Pi 2 magnetic pulsation burst. The source region for these pulsations is generally thought to lie in the region of substorm disturbance in the auroral oval. In this paper we outline the characteristics of Pi 2 pulsations in regions near the substorm enhanced electrojet but removed from the locale of the westward travelling surge. We show that a resonance region for the pulsations lies at the equatorwad edge of the westward electrojet, which in the evening sector marks the locus of the Harang discontinuity. Finally we show examples where the maximum amplitude of the Pi 2 is located at or equatorward of the southern border of the eastward electrojet or at the southern border of the westward electrojet. This is clear evidence for the coupling of wave energy into the L-shells far distant from the source of the energy. Mechanisms for Pi 2 generation are discussed in the context of the results presented in this paper.  相似文献
