The pathway and fate of heavy metals were studied in 10m3 enclosures at Xiamen Bay in 1985. The dissolved metals added are removed rather quickly during the first days, and their half-removal times ( t1/2) (d) are as follows: Pb 5. 4-5. 8, Hg 6. 7-14, Zn 11-22, Cu 16 - 29, and Cd 30-89. Zinc is transferred biologically to particles during phytoplankton bloom. The main Fate of added metals after 27 days is as follows; over 80% Cd and 60% Cu remain in dissolved phase, more than 60% Pb and 50% Hg transfer to settling settlement, while Zn is equally distributed in dissolved phase and settling settlement. The wall uptake is less than 2% of the total metals added. Organic materials play an essential role in the partition and the transfer of heavy metals in water column. Terrigenous and autochthonous particles show different affinities to different metals. Most heavy metals associate weakly with zooplankton. The Binding of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu to the particles shows distinctive features related to the diagenetic  相似文献

On 21 May 1989, a major earthquake swarm on the Reykjanes Ridge at59°44 N, 29°32 W at a water depth of about 1000 m andabout 500 km southwest of Iceland was detected on both the WorldwideStandard Seismic Network (WWSSN) and Icelandic seismic networks. As part ofa multi-institutional response to this swarm, the Naval ResearchLaboratory arranged for a P3 Orion Aircraft to deploy sonobuoys and AXBTs inthe immediate vicinity of the swarm activity. The detection of the swarmmotivated a survey of the region in 1990, using the towed SeaMARC IIside-looking sonar system. In 1990–1991 the Russian ShirshovInstitute of Oceanology offered the use of its MIR deep-divingsubmersibles to investigate the rise axis for recent volcanism. During 1992,a scientific team comprised of five US and ten Russian scientists mobilizedthe twin, deep diving Russian submersibles to study the spreading axis ofthe Reykjanes Ridge. The resulting data analyses allows us to conclude thatthe 1989 seismic swarm event occurred adjacent to and east of the largeaxial high in the center of our survey area. The length, width and depthrange of the earthquakes were very similar to major seismic swarm eventsconfined to fissure systems in the Krafla region of Iceland. It is likelythat the earthquake swarm was located on a fresh, well-defined systemof fissures and faults extending south of the northernmost axial highstudied. The earthquake swarm was probably associated with an emanation oflava creating a region of high backscatter, located just to the east of thecentral axial high. In addition, the region of high-backscatterremains unsampled because it lay underneath the nadir of the processedSeaMARC tracks used to plan the submersible survey. Facilitated by fuel economy, climate legislation and government policy, sales of light-duty plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles are rapidly increasing during the last decade. But their energy and emissions impact have not been fully investigated, particularly accounting for energy and emissions during electricity generation. In this study, we conducted in-use energy consumption and emissions measurements of a plug-in and a battery electric vehicle under real-world city and highway driving conditions. We further compare them with energy consumption and emissions from counterpart conventional vehicles under the same driving conditions, to exclude benefits due to different vehicle specifications. Our results show that both the plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles can achieve about 50% energy benefits compared with their counterpart conventional vehicles, mainly through capturing regenerative energy. But when vehicles are tested in high-speed or high-acceleration driving conditions, the distance-normalized life-cycle CO2 emissions of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles are higher to their counterpart gasoline powered vehicles. The CO2 emissions comparison results can vary based on the location and time of electricity generation. Therefore, our results confirm that benefits of promoting electric vehicles should consider temporal and spatial aspects of electricity generation.  相似文献

The tropically associated black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) is expanding into salt marshes of the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM). This species has colonized temperate systems dominated by smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) in Texas, Louisiana, Florida and, most recently, Mississippi. To date, little is known about the habitat value of black mangroves for juvenile fish and invertebrates. Here we compare benthic epifauna, infauna, and nekton use of Spartina-dominated, Avicennia-dominated, and mixed Spartina and black mangrove habitats in two areas with varying densities and ages of black mangroves. Faunal samples and sediment cores were collected monthly from April to October in 2012 and 2013 from Horn Island, MS, and twice yearly in the Chandeleur Islands, LA. Multivariate analysis suggested benthic epifauna communities differed significantly between study location and among habitat types, with a significant interaction between the two fixed factors. Differences in mangrove and marsh community composition were greater at the Chandeleurs than at Horn Island, perhaps because of the distinct mangrove/marsh ecotone and the high density and age of mangroves there. Infaunal abundances were significantly higher at Horn Island, with tanaids acting as the main driver of differences between study locations. We predict that if black mangroves continue to increase in abundance in the northern GOM, estuarine faunal community composition could shift substantially because black mangroves typically colonize shorelines at higher elevations than smooth cordgrass, resulting in habitats of differing complexity and flooding duration.  相似文献

Passive diffusive-adsorptive samplers are being considered for vapor intrusion (VI) pathway assessment, particularly where multi-week time-weighted average concentrations are desired. Recent studies have shown that passive samplers can produce accurate results under well-controlled steady concentration conditions, and field performance was also demonstrated at several sites. The objective of this study was to examine passive sampler performance in settings with time-varying indoor air concentrations, through a comparison of passive sampler results to concentrations determined by 24-h active sorbent tube sampling in a series of multi-week deployments. Sampling was performed in a well-instrumented residential building as well as industrial buildings, over periods of time ranging from 1 to 7 weeks. Strong linear correlations were noted between passive and active sampling concentration results for some passive samplers, with passive sampling results being similar to or lower than measured active sampling results by about 50% for those samplers in the residential study and about 25% higher in the industrial building study. Other samplers produced poor agreement. The conclusion from this study is that some passive samplers have great potential for use in multi-week indoor air quality monitoring. It was further determined that there is need for accepted procedures to validate and calibrate passive samplers for use in the field.  相似文献

We report the ratio of the initial carbon available as CO that forms gas‐phase compounds compared to the fraction that deposits as a carbonaceous solid (the gas/solid branching ratio) as a function of time and temperature for iron, magnetite, and amorphous iron silicate smoke catalysts during surface‐mediated reactions in an excess of hydrogen and in the presence of N2. This fraction varies from more than 99% for an amorphous iron silicate smoke at 673 K to less than 40% for a magnetite catalyst at 873 K. The CO not converted into solids primarily forms methane, ethane, water, and CO2, as well as a very wide range of organic molecules at very low concentration. Carbon deposits do not form continuous coatings on the catalytic surfaces, but instead form extremely high surface area per unit volume “filamentous” structures. While these structures will likely form more slowly but over much longer times in protostellar nebulae than in our experiments due to the much lower partial pressure of CO, such fluffy coatings on the surfaces of chondrules or calcium aluminum inclusions could promote grain–grain sticking during low‐velocity collisions.  相似文献

New seismic reflection profiles from the Tugrug basin in the Gobi‐Altai region of western Mongolia demonstrate the existence of preserved Mesozoic extensional basins by imaging listric normal faults, extensional growth strata, and partially inverted grabens. A core hole from this region recovered ca. 1600 continuous meters of Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous (Kimmeridgian–Berriasian) strata overlying Late Triassic volcanic basement. The cored succession is dominated by lacustrine and marginal lacustrine deposits ranging from stratified lacustrine, to subaqueous fan and delta, to subaerial alluvial‐fluvial environments. Multiple unconformities are encountered, and these represent distinct phases in basin evolution including syn‐extensional deposition and basin inversion. Prospective petroleum source and reservoir intervals occur, and both fluid inclusions and oil staining in the core provide evidence of hydrocarbon migration. Ties to correlative outcrop sections underscore that, in general, this basin appears to share a similar tectono‐stratigraphic evolution with petroliferous rift basins in eastern Mongolia and China. Nevertheless, some interesting contrasts to these other basins are noted, including distinct sandstone provenance, less overburden, and younger (Neogene) inversion structures. The Tugrug basin occupies an important but perplexing paleogeographic position between late Mesozoic contractile and extensional provinces. Its formation may record a rapid temporal shift from orogenic crustal thickening to extensional collapse in the Late Jurassic, and/or an accommodation zone with a Mesozoic strike‐slip component.  相似文献
