An investigation of biological transport processes which may link the deep ocean floor to shallow depths was carried out at a site on the Madeira Abyssal Plain, depth 5440m, position 31°17′N 25°24′W. Benthic and midwater sampling was carried out concurrently; time lapse photography provided an estimate of biological activity on the bottom.Biomass was measured throughout the water column; overall biomass was low and no evidence was found for mass upward transport resulting from biological activity. The potential for transport via individual species does exist since a number of species were distributed from the sea bed to thousands of metres above the bottom. However, theres is no direct evidence for vertical migrations through these vast depth ranges and the numbers of individuals concerned is very small. The arrival and possible predation of a large food parcel on the deep sea floor was observed.  相似文献

Laboratory investigations were conducted on the formation of NaF° ion-pairs at the ionic strength of seawater using specific ion electrodes. Sodium and fluoride ion electrodes produced results which are consistent with the ion-pairing model for these ionic interactions. The stoichiometric association constant for NaF°, K1NaF, was determined at 15, 25, and 35°C. It was assumed that K1NaF was a function of temperature, pressure, and ionic strength but not of solution composition. The value for K1NaF at 25°C and I = 0.7 m is 0.045 ± 0.006. K1NaF increased with decreasing temperature. This result was used to recompute values of K1MgF and K1CaF accounting for the presence of NaF° ion-pairs. The value for K1NaF indicates that 1.1% of the fluoride in seawater is ion-paired with sodium at 25°C and 35‰ salinity. This fraction increases to approximately 2% at the lower temperatures found in the deep ocean. The percentage of free fluoride in natural seawater was measured at 15, 25, and 35°C to verify the speciation calculated from equilibrium constants.  相似文献

 The oxidation and reduction that occur during early diagenesis of sediments has been studied in the interstitial waters of a rapidly accumulating sedimentary sequence from the Mediterranean margin of Spain. A series of reactions that are mediated by progressively lower free energy derived from oxidation of organic matter is evident in the sedimentary sequence. Iron and manganese are rapidly reduced. Phosphate and alkalinity maxima at a subbottom depth of 15 m indicate maximal organic matter degradation. We present the Millennium-II Simulation (MS-II), a very large N -body simulation of dark matter evolution in the concordance Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. The MS-II assumes the same cosmological parameters and uses the same particle number and output data structure as the original Millennium Simulation (MS), but was carried out in a periodic cube one-fifth the size  (100  h −1 Mpc)  with five times better spatial resolution (a Plummer equivalent softening of  1.0  h −1 kpc  ) and with 125 times better mass resolution (a particle mass of  6.9 × 106  h −1 M  ). By comparing results at MS and MS-II resolution, we demonstrate excellent convergence in dark matter statistics such as the halo mass function, the subhalo abundance distribution, the mass dependence of halo formation times, the linear and non-linear autocorrelations and power spectra, and halo assembly bias. Together, the two simulations provide precise results for such statistics over an unprecedented range of scales, from haloes similar to those hosting Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies to haloes corresponding to the richest galaxy clusters. The 'Milky Way' haloes of the Aquarius Project were selected from a lower resolution version of the MS-II and were then resimulated at much higher resolution. As a result, they are present in the MS-II along with thousands of other similar mass haloes. A comparison of their assembly histories in the MS-II and in resimulations of 1000 times better resolution shows detailed agreement over a factor of 100 in mass growth. We publicly release halo catalogues and assembly trees for the MS-II in the same format within the same archive as those already released for the MS.  相似文献

Heterogeneous nucleation of supersaturated n-nonane vapour on seed particles of different size and composition has been investigated using a fast expansion chamber. Monodisperse seed particle sizes were ranging from about 4 nm up to about 24 nm in diameter. By using different types of particle generators WOx, Ag and (NH4)2SO4 particles were generated. For direct comparison between different particle compositions overlapping sizes have been generated for WOx and Ag at about 7 nm particle diameter as well as for Ag and (NH4)2SO4 at about 15 nm. Nucleation temperature was kept constant at about 278 K. Experimental data were compared to Kelvin equation and Fletcher theory including the effect of line tension. It was found that heterogeneous nucleation of n-nonane seems to be independent of seed particle composition and starts well below the Kelvin curve. Good agreement was achieved with Fletcher theory including the effect of line tension.  相似文献
