Stepwise outgassing experiments were performed on eleven whole rock samples from a sequence of diabase dikes from the Great Northern Peninsula. Gas released at high temperatures (> ? 925–950°C) was consistently characterized by anomalously high apparent ages. These are attributed to the release of excess radiogenic argon, gas which probably resides in the mineral augite. At temperatures below ? 700°C, a wide range in apparent age was observed. On the other hand, the medium temperature region (? 700–950°C) is characterized by a relatively small range in apparent age. Data points corresponding to this region are rather well correlated in an isochron-type diagram; the slope of the best-fitting straight line corresponds to an aget = 605 ± 10m.y. We suggest that the outgassing of unaltered plagioclase is dominating the age spectra in this temperature interval. Consequently, we take 605 ± 10 m.y. as the time of emplacement of the Long Range dike swarm. This event may have marked the opening of a proto-Atlantic Ocean. The Acadian Orogeny (perhaps the ocean-closing event ? 380 m.y. ago) appears to be recorded in the low-medium temperature regions in the cases of two rather extensively altered samples. 相似文献

Forty-six new K-Ar age determinations are presented on whole rock samples and mineral separates from volcanic and subvolcanic rocks of Gran Canaria. The main subaerial shield building basaltic volcanism with estimated volume of about 1000 km3 was confined to the interval about 13.7 m.y. to 13.5 m.y. ago in the middle Miocene. Substantial volume (~100 km3) of silicic volcanics (trachyte and peralkaline rhyolite) were erupted with no detectable time break following the basaltic volcanism, essentially contemporaneous with formation of a large collapse caldera at 13.4±0.3 m.y. ago. Trachytic to phonolitic volcanism continued intermittently in the waning states of activity until about 9 m.y. ago. Following a long hiatus there was resurgence of volcanism with eruption of about 100 km3 of basanitic to hauyne phonolitic rocks of the Roque Nublo Group between about 4.4 m.y. and 3.4 m.y. ago in the Pliocene. After a hiatus of less than 1.0 m.y., olivine nephelinite magmas were erupted and this activity continued intermittently until relatively recent times, the younger eruptives being mainly basanitic in composition. The volume of volcanic products in this phase probably does not exceed 10 km3. Thus the volume of all the resurgent volcanism comprises less than 10 percent of the subaerially exposed part of Gran Canaria. The results show that the subaerial main shield building phase of volcanism in Gran Canaria, consisting of mildly alkali to transitional basalts, occurred over a time interval that was less than 0.5 m.y. Magmatic evolution on Gran Canaria appears to be similar to that found on other basaltic volcanoes in oceanic regions. Thus volcanoes in the Hawaiian, Marquesas and Society Islands all were built by basaltic lavas in similar short-lived episodes of volcanism. In some Hawaiian volcanoes, a resurgent phase of volcanism of strongly undersaturated basalts of small volume is recognized following a long hiatus, again similar to that found on Gran Canaria. The relatively large volume of silicic lavas erupted in Gran Canaria immediately following the main basaltic shield building phase is, however, not matched in the Pacific volcanoes mentioned. 相似文献

Mappings of the earth surface and their representation in 3D (three‐dimensional) models are commonly used in most recent research. Modeling research, which starts with classical surveying methods, acquires new dimensions matching the modern technologies. 3D models of any object or earth surface can be used in much visual and scientific research. A digital model of the landscape is an important part within creation of geo‐information systems used in the public administration and in the commercial sphere. It is an important tool in applications such as geomorphology, hydrology, geology, cartography, ecology, mining etc. Values of volume in terrains that do not have regular geometric structure can be obtained more accurately by using 3D models of surfaces with respect to developing technology. Basic data of 3D models must indicate 3D coordinates of the surveyed object in the reference frame. Distribution and intensity of points are important factors in modeling earth surfaces. A minimum number of points is desired in defining an object in 3D. Interpolation methods employing different mathematical models are used to obtain 3D models of terrain surfaces. In this study, the effect of interpolation methods in defining a terrain surface is investigated. For this purpose, a uniform surface, hill‐shaped artificial object with a known volume is employed. The 3D surface and volume are calculated by using 12 different interpolation methods. Point distribution, point intensity and accuracy of point measurements are not considered. This paper presents the use of two multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) frameworks based on hierarchical fuzzy inference engines for the purpose of assessing drinking water quality in distribution networks. Incommensurable and uncertain water quality parameters (WQPs) at various sampling locations of the water distribution network (WDN) are monitored. Two classes of WQPs including microbial and physicochemical parameters are considered. Partial, incomplete and subjective information on WQPs introduce uncertainty to the water quality assessment process. Likewise, conflicting WQPs result in a partially reliable assessment of the quality associated with drinking water. The proposed methodology is based on two hierarchical inference engines tuned using historical data on WQPs in the WDN and expert knowledge. Each inference engine acts as a decision-making agent specialized in assessing one aspect of quality associated with drinking water. The MCDM frameworks were developed to assess the microbial and physicochemical aspects of water quality assessment. The MCDM frameworks are based on either fuzzy evidential or fuzzy rule-based inference. Both frameworks can interpret and communicate the relative quality associated with drinking water, while the second is superior in capturing the nonlinear relationships between the WQPs and estimated water quality. More comprehensive rules will have to be generated prior to reliable water quality assessment in real-case situations. The examples presented here serve to demonstrate the proposed frameworks. The effect of single vegetation elements on wind speed and sediment transport in the Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Soil loss caused by wind erosion is a widespread phenomenon in the Sahelian zone of West Africa. According to Sahelian farmers, scattered vegetation standing in amongst the crop has the potential for a wind erosion control strategy. This study was conducted to study the effect of single vegetation elements on the pattern of average wind speed and sediment transport. This was done by two experiments that were carried out during the rainy seasons of 2002 and 2003 in north Burkina Faso, West Africa. Wind speeds were measured using three sonic anemometers, at a sampling frequency of 16 Hz. Sediment transport was determined by calculating the mass fluxes from 17 MWAC catchers. In this study, a shrub was defined as a vegetation element with branches until ground and a tree as a vegetation element with a distinctive trunk below a canopy. Behind shrubs wind speed near the soil surface was reduced up to approximately seven times the height of the shrub. The observed reduction in wind speed in the area where wind speed was reduced was 15 per cent on average. At the sides of the shrub, wind speed was increased, by on average 6 per cent. As the area of increase in wind speed is one‐third of the area of decrease in wind speed, the net effect of a shrub is a reduction in wind speed. A similar pattern was visible for the pattern of sediment transport around a shrub. Downwind of a shrub, sediment transport was diminished up to seven times the height of the shrub. Probably most of this material was trapped by the shrub. Trees showed a local increase of wind around the trunk, which is expected to relate to an increase in sediment transport around the trunk. Mass flux measurements of sediment transport were not made, but visual observations in the field substantiate this. Behind the canopy of a tree, a tree acts similarly to a shrub regarding its effects on average wind speed, but as a tree is generally a larger obstacle than a shrub the extent of this effect is larger than for shrubs. Thus, whereas shrubs are more effective than trees regarding their direct effect on soil loss by trapping sand particles near the soil surface, trees are more effective in affecting soil loss indirectly by reducing the wind speed downwind more effectively than shrubs. A new measurement technique enables the complex dielectric properties of the geological strata comprising the UG1–UG2 (Upper Group 1–Upper Group 2) unit of the Bushveld Complex in South Africa to be determined with unprecedented detail at radio frequencies (RF). Results of non-destructive laboratory measurements of representative diamond drill core samples from the UG1–UG2 unit are presented at 25 MHz. These data establish that the UG1 and UG2 chromitite layers are embedded in rock strata (norite, pyroxenite and anorthosite) which are translucent in the HF spectral band, whereas the chromitite layers themselves exhibit significant velocity contrast, making them good radar reflectors. The data presented here is useful for calibration of the radar system, and for predicting the range and resolution performance of borehole radars operating in both the hanging and footwalls of the economically important platiniferous UG2 reef. 相似文献

Ocean/ice interaction at the base of deep-drafted Antarctic ice shelves modifies the physical properties of inflowing shelf
waters to become Ice Shelf Water (ISW). In contrast to the conditions at the atmosphere/ocean interface, the increased hydrostatic
pressure at the glacial base causes gases embedded in the ice to dissolve completely after being released by melting. Helium
and neon, with an extremely low solubility, are saturated in glacial meltwater by more than 1000%. At the continental slope
in front of the large Antarctic caverns, ISW mixes with ambient waters to form different precursors of Antarctic Bottom Water.
A regional ocean circulation model, which uses an explicit formulation of the ocean/ice shelf interaction to describe for
the first time the input of noble gases to the Southern Ocean, is presented. The results reveal a long-term variability of
the basal mass loss solely controlled by the interaction between waters of the continental shelf and the ice shelf cavern.
Modeled helium and neon supersaturations from the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf front show a “low-pass” filtering of the inflowing
signal due to cavern processes. On circumpolar scales, the simulated helium and neon distributions allow us to quantify the
ISW contribution to bottom water, which spreads with the coastal current connecting the major formation sites in Ross and
Weddell Seas.
