The main goal of this work is to describe the diurnal and seasonal variations of the radiation balance components at the surface in the city of S?o Paulo based on observations carried out during 2004. Monthly average hourly values indicate that the amplitudes of the diurnal cycles of net radiation (Q*), downwelling and upwelling shortwave radiation (SWDW, SWUP), and longwave radiations (LWDW, LWUP) in February were, respectively, 37%, 14%, 19%, 11%, and 5% larger than they were in August. The monthly average daily values indicate a variation of 60% for Q*, with a minimum in June and a maximum in December; 45% for SWDW, with a minimum in May and a maximum in September; 50% for SWUP, with a minimum in June and a maximum in September; 13% for LWDW, with a minimum in July and a maximum in January; and 9% for LWUP, with a minimum in July and a maximum in February. It was verified that the atmospheric broadband transmissivity varied from 0.36 to 0.57; the effective albedo of the surface varied from 0.08 to 0.10; and the atmospheric effective emissivity varied from 0.79 to 0.92. The surface effective emissivity remained approximately constant and equal to 0.96. The albedo and surface effective emissivity for S?o Paulo agreed with those reported for urban areas in Europe and North America cities. This indicates that material and geometric effects on albedo and surface emissivity in S?o Paulo are similar to ones observed in typical middle latitudes cities. On the other hand, it was found that S?o Paulo city induces an urban heat island with daytime maximum intensity varying from 2.6°C in July (16:00 LT) to 5.5°C in September (15:00 LT). The analysis of the radiometric properties carried out here indicate that this daytime maximum is a primary response to the seasonal variation of daily values of net solar radiation at the surface.  相似文献

Collapse of structures in severe earthquakes is synonymous with loss of vertical load bearing capacity in the columns and walls of the structural system. This paper identifies criteria that could be used in the context of preliminary assessment in order to rapidly identify from the large inventory of existing, substandard construction, those buildings that are more likely candidates for catastrophic collapse. Proposed criteria include (i) a stiffness index in order to determine the severity of seismic displacement demand and, (ii) a base-shear strength index associated with typical column details representative of the state of practice from the era of the building’s period of construction. The criteria may be used to characterize the primary deficiencies of the building and the level of spectral acceleration that may be tolerated prior to failure. Ten buildings representative of older construction practices used in the Mediterranean countries prior to the introduction of capacity design procedures, which suffered excessive damage or collapse in past earthquakes, are used to proof-test the applicability of the procedure and the practical advantages of spectrum compatible stiffness and strength criteria that may be used in determining a proper retrofit strategy.  相似文献

We report results of our optical photometric observations of ten gamma-ray loud blazers, namely: 0219+428 (3C66A), PKS 0420-014 (OA 129), S5 0716+714, 0754+100 (OI 090.4), 0827+243 (OJ248), 1652+398 (Mrk 501), 2200+420 (BL Lacertae), 2230+114 (CTA 102), 2251+158 (3C 454.3) and 2344+514. The observations were carried out in September-October, 2000 using the 70 cm optical telescope at Abstumani Observatory, Georgia. We found intra-day variations in 0420-014, S5 0716+714, BL Lacertae and CTA 102. A variation of 0.3 magnitude over a time scale of about 3 hours was observed in the R passband in BL Lacertae on JD 2451827. We did not detect any variation in 3C 66A, Mrk 501, or 3C 454.3 during our observations. Nor did we detect any clear evidence of variation in 1ES 2344+514 during our two weeks' observing run of the TeV gamma-ray source.  相似文献

The Early Cretaceous separation of Newfoundland from Iberia–Ireland is a classic example of a magma-poor continental margin with hyperextension and with widespread minor magmatism resulting in seamounts. This study defines the distribution of seamounts east of Orphan Knoll, and documents and interprets the geochemical character of the one recovered lava sample. Video imagery of lava outcrops, and the sample, were obtained by ROV from Orphan seamount, one of a linear series of small seamounts overlying transitional thinned continental crust on the seaward side of Orphan Knoll. New multibeam bathymetry and legacy seismic data show several seamounts that extend irregularly along the fault-bound NE margin of Orphan Knoll. Whole rock geochemistry shows the sample to be highly alkaline basanite or possibly tephrite. Diopside–hedenbergite, kaersutite and K-feldspar phenocrysts were analyzed by electron microprobe and scanning electron microscope, and alteration minerals including kaolinite were identified by X-ray diffraction. The highly alkaline character of the basanite is similar only to Early Cretaceous volcanic and sub-volcanic rocks erupted through thick continental crust of the Mesoproterozoic Grenville Orogeny. The location of the linear set of seamounts is related to margin-parallel faults on the seaward side of Orphan Knoll that provided a pathway for magma, although ENE-trending lineaments in individual seamounts or seamount groups suggest the influence of oceanic fracture zones. A lower gradient crest to Orphan seamount above 2,200 m suggests subaerial erosion, consistent with the presence of kaolinite as an alteration product and the absence of lava pillows at and above this depth.  相似文献

Archaeological techniques and methodology are used to identify seismic traces and disorders in ancient buildings. Clear evidence could be identified as direct seismic consequences or as communities’ technical answers for repair or reinforcement of buildings in order to reduce their vulnerability. This methodology is called “archaeological reading of buildings.” It is based on the identification of different construction phases, modifications and past events (human actions or natural phenomena) suffered by buildings during their life. The data read from the buildings are successively observed, identified, described, and recorded, following the principal of archaeological stratigraphy, in order to explain the buildings history. The seismic pathologies are identified according to detailed engineering knowledge of the behaviour of buildings during seismic motion. In this case study, our approach is applied to the historical city of Manosque, located in a seismic area along the “Moyenne–Durance” active fault. As a result of historical researches (Quenet G, Baumont D, Scotti O, Levret A, Ann Geophys, 47(2/3):583–595, 2004), many historical documents gave evidence about this earthquake’s effects. Among these documents, was an exceptional one: the record of a survey made in Manosque by bricklayers a few days after the 14th August 1708 shock. This gave us specific information concerning the seismic damage caused in the town of Manosque and was the starting point to validate the method. In the present paper, the archaeological reading of buildings method is illustrated by two specific cases: the Charité building in Manosque and the Sainte-Agathe chapel in Saint-Maime village. The buildings suffered various modifications during many centuries. This complicates the application of the method, however the observations made from the buildings correlate well with the indications deduced from written sources, validating our approach. The study highlights the necessity to cross correlate different field data in the frame of a multidisciplinary approach in order to obtain valuable results concerning details of seismic damage, its approximate dating by architectural chronology and the communities’ reaction in terms of repairs and reinforcement techniques.  相似文献

We use input-output analysis of nitrogen flows between various sources-sectors and natural waters in the Swedish Norrström drainage basin for investigating and bounding the implication range of some uncertainty sources for results of subsurface nitrogen accumulation-depletion in this basin. We quantify different possible base and extreme assumptions of nitrogen discharges and transport pathways from agriculture to surface and groundwater in the basin. The results are robust in showing considerable nitrogen accumulation-depletion flow interactions taking place between the basin’s mobile water and accumulated nitrogen pools in soils, sediments and/or relatively immobile subsurface water zones for all different scenario assumptions. Similar scenario robustness is also found in resulting relative contributions of different active nitrogen source-sectors to nitrogen flows in natural water systems. In the Norrström basin, and possibly more generally, nitrogen accumulation-depletion flows to and from accumulated legacies for the future or from the past appear therefore to be more important for water quality than current nitrogen discharges from active source-sectors.  相似文献

Summary The chemistry of amphiboles from schists, quartzofeldspathic gneisses and migmatites ranging in metamorphic grade from greenschist to amphibolite facies has been determined by electron microprobe. Intercalated amphibolites suggest that some of the rocks retrograded from the eclogite stability field; others were never metamorphosed above greenschist facies. Rocks which contain other mineralogical evidence for an original high pressure assemblage have amphiboles with high Na/K, low Fe and relatively low Ti. Other high-grade rocks contain amphibole of broadly pargasitic composition. The pargasites from more Ca-rich bulk compositions have less substitution of Na for Ca in the M4 site than do those from Ca-poor bulk compositions. A lower grade assemblage of amphiboles ranges from hornblende through actinolitic hornblende to actinolite; this is retrograde in the gneisses and migmatites, but may be prograde in the schists. In contrast, the high-grade assemblage shows almost constant high K with variable Na and quite different trends for edenite-type substitution (IVAl variation with A site occupancy) and variation ofIVAl with Fe/(Fe + Mg) and with Ti.

Zusammenfassung Die Chemische Zusammensetzung von Amphibolen aus Schiefern, Quarz-Feldspat-Gneisen, und Migmatiten, deren metamorpher Grad von Grünschiefer- bis zur Amphibolitfazies reicht, wurde mit der Elektronenstrahl-Mikrosonde bestimmt. Zwischengeschaltete Amphibolite legen die Vermutung nahe, daß einige der Gesteine durch retrograde Metamorphose aus dem Eklogit-Stabilitatsfeld hervorgegangen sind; andere jedoch hatten niemals in ihrer Entwicklung einen höheren Grad als den der Grünschie-ferfazies erreicht. Gesteine, die andere mineralogische Hinweise für eine ursprungliche Hochdruck-Paragenese führen, enthalten Amphibole mit hohem Na/K, niedrigen Eisen und relativ niedrigen Ti. Andere high-grade Gesteine enthalten Amphibol von pargasitischer Zusammensetzung. Die Pargasite aus mehr Kalzium-reichen Gesteinen zeigen geringere Substitution von Natrium für Kalzium an den M4 Plätzen als jene aus Kalzium-armen Gesteinen. Eine niedriger-gradige Paragenese von Amphibolen umfaßt Zusammensetzungen von Hornblende über aktinolitische Hornblende bis zu Aktinolit; diese ist in den Gneisen und Migmatiten retrograd, durfte in den Schiefern jedoch prograd sein. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt die hochgradige Paragenese fast durchwegs konstant hohe Kalium-Gehalte mit variablem Natrium und einen anderen Trend für Edenit-artige Substitution (IVAl Variation mit Besetzung der A Plätze) und eine Variation vonIVAl mit Fe/(Fe + Mg) und mit Ti.

The island of Aegma includes some of the oldest volcanic rocks in the south Hellenic Arc previous radiometric dates range from 3.87 to 4.4 Ma. The volcanic sequence is divided into nine units on the basis of field relations, petrography and geochemistry, and the characteristic paleomagnetic polarity of each unit has been determined. Two new radiometric dates (2.1 and 3.9 Ma) show that the volcanism spans the Pliocene. A detailed chronology is proposed using the paleomagnetic data which places the most voluminous volcanism in the mid Pliocene.  相似文献

Mounting evidence suggests that a large portion of the world's fossil fuel reserves will have to remain in the ground to prevent dangerous climate change. Yet, the fossil fuel industry continues to invest in new infrastructure to expand fuel supply. There appears to be a prevailing logic that extraction is inevitable, in spite of growing climate change concerns. Few political leaders seem to be willing to challenge this logic. The absence of adequate political action on climate change has sparked a burgeoning social movement focused on constraining fossil fuel supply. This article describes this movement, and explores the role that social mobilization may play in enabling policies that limit fossil fuel extraction. Drawing from literature on social mobilization and political change, this work: (1) discusses some of the social and political barriers to mobilization focused on restricting fossil fuel supply; (2) describes the pathways through which mobilization efforts may influence climate policy; and (3) highlights insights from studies of successful social movements that have relevance for the issue of fossil fuel extraction. The article concludes with directions for future research on social mobilization focused on supply-side climate policy.
