To examine electron transport, energization, and precipitation in Mercury's magnetosphere, a hybrid simulation study has been carried out that follows electron trajectories within the global magnetospheric electric and magnetic field configuration of Mercury. We report analysis for two solar-wind parameter conditions corresponding to the first two MESSENGER Mercury flybys on January 14, 2008, and October 6, 2008, which occurred for similar solar wind speed and density but contrasting interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) directions. During the first flyby the IMF had a northward component, while during the second flyby the IMF was southward. Electron trajectories are traced in the fields of global hybrid simulations for the two flybys. Some solar wind electrons follow complex trajectories at or near where dayside reconnection occurs and enter the magnetosphere at these locations. The entry locations depend on the IMF orientation (north or south). As the electrons move through the entry regions they can be energized as they execute non-adiabatic (demagnetized) motion. Some electrons become magnetically trapped and drift around the planet with energies on the order of 1–10 keV. The highest energy of electrons anywhere in the magnetosphere is about 25 keV, consistent with the absence of high-energy (>35 keV) electrons observed during either MESSENGER flyby. Once within the magnetosphere, a fraction of the electrons precipitates at the planetary surface with fluxes on the order of 109 cm−2 s−1 and with energies of hundreds of eV. This finding has important implications for the viability of electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) as a mechanism for contributing to the formation of the exosphere and heavy ion cloud around Mercury. From laboratory estimates of ESD ion yields, a calculated ion production rate due to ESD at Mercury is found to be on par with ion sputtering yields. 相似文献

This paper addresses some of the issues related to externally occulted solar coronagraph; vignetting and achievable resolution
due to an external occulter. The analytical expression by Evans (J Opt Soc Am 38:1083–1085, 1948) is used to perform the initial calculations. An expression for the vignetting for a given external occulter and field angle
is derived. The values obtained with the derived expression are verified with those obtained by ZEMAX an Optical design software.
The degradation in angular resolution of the system due to vignetting is also presented and an empirical relation to calculate

The international Galactic Emission Mapping project aims to map and characterize the polarization field of the Milky Way.
In Portugal it will map the sky polarized emission of the Northern Hemisphere in C-band and provide templates for map calibration
and foreground control of microwave space data to be provided by ESA Planck Surveyor mission and later missions. The receiver
system is equipped with a novel receiver with a full digital back-end using a low-cost Field Programmable Gate Array without
compromising its performance relation. This new digital backend comprises a base-band complex cross-correlator outputting
the four Stokes parameters of the incoming polarized radiation. In this document we describe the design and implementation
of the complex correlator using the FPGA and the dedicated digitizers at each receiver arm, detailing the method applied at

A new model, dubbed the MRQSphere, provides a multiresolution representation of the gravity field designed for its estimation.
The multiresolution representation uses an approximation via Gaussians of the solution of the Laplace’s equation in the exterior
of a sphere. Also, instead of the spherical harmonics, variations in the angular variables are modeled by a set of functions
constructed using quadratures for the sphere invariant under the icosahedral group. When combined, these tools specify the
spatial resolution of the gravity field as a function of altitude and required accuracy. We define this model, and apply it
to representing and estimating the gravity field of the asteroid 433 Eros. We verified that a MRQSphere model derived directly
from the true spherical harmonics gravity model satisfies the user defined precision. We also use the MRQSphere model to estimate
the gravity field of Eros for a simulated satellite mission, yielding a solution with accuracy only limited by measurement

In this study, we test the potential of two different classification algorithms, namely the spectral angle mapper (SAM) and object-based classifier for mapping the land use/cover characteristics using a Hyperion imagery. We chose a study region that represents a typical Mediterranean setting in terms of landscape structure, composition and heterogeneous land cover classes. Accuracy assessment of the land cover classes was performed based on the error matrix statistics. Validation points were derived from visual interpretation of multispectral high resolution QuickBird-2 satellite imagery. Results from both the classifiers yielded more than 70% classification accuracy. However, the object-based classification clearly outperformed the SAM by 7.91% overall accuracy (OA) and a relatively high kappa coefficient. Similar results were observed in the classification of the individual classes. Our results highlight the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing data as well as object-based classification approach for mapping heterogeneous land use/cover in a typical Mediterranean setting. 相似文献

Abstract A generalized two-disk dynamo model is considered that includes mechanical friction; this model is intended to simulate in its broad character the behavior of the geodynamo. Fixed points, limit cycles and chaotic attractors are located for different input parameters of the model. The chaotic regimes are of several kinds as are the “routes to chaos”. Abstract For the purpose of deriving an analytical parametrization, oceanic mesoscale eddies are represented as a horizontally propagating wave field in a non-uniform environment. The mathematical analysis rests upon the assumption of scale disparity between a short eddy scale and a long mean-flow scale. The novelty resides in the treatment of finite-amplitude eddies, which, moreover, form either a band-like or a cell-like pattern. A barotropic ocean is chosen as a first step to illustrate the mathematical analysis, but dissipation is included. The main result is an analytical derivation of a mesoscale-eddy parametrization: the mean-flow equation contains Reynolds-stress terms which are computed from parameters of the eddy field, which, in turn, are predicted by separate evolution equations. Due to restrictive assumptions (barotropy, orthogonal waves,…), the parametrization established here should be viewed only as a first step toward the design of a more practical parameterization for large-scale modelling. 相似文献

In this study, the potential land use planning for rural communities and agricultural development is examined with a multi-criteria analysis and Geographical Information System. For this purpose, geological, geomorphological and socio-economic data and natural hazard maps were chosen as major factors affecting both land uses. The Analytical Hierarchical Process method was applied to evaluate these factors and the uncertainty of their weight alterations estimated. Three scenarios were developed for each land use to examine the effect of uncertainty to the suitability assessment results, leading to the corresponding potential suitability maps. The areas of very high suitability are distributed mainly at the plain part of the study area. The proposed methodology comprises a case application concerning physical factors in conjunction with natural hazard maps in the land use planning procedure. 相似文献
