Laminated sediments in Lake Ohau, Mackenzie Basin, New Zealand, offer a potential high‐resolution climate record for the past 17 kyr. Such records are particularly important due to the relative paucity of detailed palaeoclimate data from the Southern Hemisphere mid‐latitudes. This paper presents outcomes of a study of the sedimentation processes of this temperate lake setting. Hydrometeorological, limnological and sedimentological data were collected over a 14 month period between 2011 and 2013. These data indicate that seasonality in the hydrometeorological system in combination with internal lake dynamics drives a distinct seasonal pattern of sediment dispersal and deposition on a basin‐wide scale. Sedimentary layers that accumulate proximal to the lake inflow at the northern end of the lake form in response to discrete inflow events throughout the year and display an event stratigraphy. In contrast, seasonal change in the lake system controls accumulation of light (winter) and dark (summer) laminations at the distal end of the lake, resulting in the preservation of varves. This study documents the key processes influencing sediment deposition throughout Lake Ohau and provides fundamental data for generating a high‐resolution palaeoclimate record from this temperate lake. 相似文献

Unipolar induction (UI) is a fundamental physical process, which occurs when a conducting body transverses a magnetic field. It has been suggested that UI is operating in RX J0806+15 and RX J1914+24, which are believed to be ultracompact binaries with orbital periods of 5.4 and 9.6 min, respectively. The UI model predicts that those two sources may be electron cyclotron maser sources at radio wavelengths. Other systems in which UI has been predicted to occur are short period extrasolar terrestrial planets with conducting cores. If UI is present, circularly polarized radio emission is predicted to be emitted. We have searched for this predicted radio emission from short period binaries using the Very Large Array (VLA) and Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). In one epoch, we find evidence for a radio source, coincident in position with the optical position of RX J0806+15. Although we cannot completely exclude that this is a chance alignment between the position of RX J0806+15 and an artefact in the data reduction process, the fact that it was detected at a significance level of 5.8σ and found to be transient suggests that it is more likely that RX J0806+15 is a transient radio source. We find an upper limit on the degree of circular polarization to be ∼50 per cent. The inferred brightness temperature exceeds 1018 K, which is too high for any known incoherent process, but is consistent with maser emission and UI being the driving mechanism. A normalised matrix of the occurrences and co-occurrences of n-pathological conditions in a hypothetical population is termed a severity matrix and was used to define a volume in an n-dimensional vector space representing the severity or extent of the spread of the conditions in the population. The changes in this volume resulting from varying the numbers of occurrences and co-occurrences in the severity matrix are described by the varying determinant of the matrix. The natural logarithm of this determinant was shown to be a consistent measure or index of severity for comparing the spread of the same pathological conditions among different populations or among chronological samples from the same population. While the eigenvalues of the severity matrix are used to determine the relative contribution of each pathological condition to the index of severity, the eigenvectors serve to investigate possible associations among the conditions. Actual data from a population of the soft-shell clam Mya arenaria were used to demonstrate the application of this methodology to characterise the incidence of five pathological conditions assumed to be indicators of pollution related stress on the clam population. 相似文献

In this paper we review and interpret the values of upper-atmosphere rotation rate (zonal winds) obtained by analysing satellite orbits determined from observations. The history of the method is briefly reviewed, the basic principles are explained, objections to the method are answered, and three examples are given. Existing analyses of the atmospheric rotation rate A are critically reviewed, and, after rejecting some and revising others, we are left with 85 values. These are divided according to local time and season, to give the variation of A with height in nine situations—namely morning, evening and average local time, for summer, winter and average season. These observational results indicate that the value of Λ (in rev/day), averaged over both local time and season, increases from 1.0 at 125 km to 1.22 at 325 km and then decreases to 1.0 at 430 km and 0.82 at 600 km. The value of Λ is higher in the evening (18–24 h), with a maximum value (near 1.4) corresponding to a West-to-East wind of 150 m s?1 at heights near 300 km. The value of Λ is lower in the morning (06–12 h), with East-to-West winds of order 50 m s?1 at heights of 200–400 km. There is also a consistent seasonal variation, the values of Λ being on average 0.15 higher in winter and 0.1 lower in summer than the average seasonal value. No significant variation with solar activity is found, but there is a slight tendency for a greater rotation rate at lower latitudes for heights above 300 km. Unexpectedly, the values for the 1960s are found to be significantly higher than those for the 1970s. Finally, these observational values are compared with the theoretical global model of Fuller-Rowell and Rees: there is complete agreement on the trends, though there are some differences in the mean values. 相似文献

An oil spill fishery impact assessment model system has been applied to the Georges Bank-Gulf of Maine region to assess the sensitivity of probable impact on several key fisheries to spill location and timing. Simulations of the impact on the fishery of tanker spills (20 million gallons released over 5 days), at two separate locations for each season of the year, and blowout spills (68 million gallons released over 30 days) at one location, with monthly releases and at six other locations with seasonal spills have been studied. Atlantic cod has been employed as the principal fish species throughout the simulations. Impacts on Atlantic herring and haddock have also been investigated for selected cases. All spill sites are located on Georges Bank with the majority in the general region of OCS leasing activity.The results of these simulations suggest a complex interaction among spill location and timing, the spatial and temporal distribution of spawning, the population dynamics of the species under study, and the hydrodynamics of the area. For the species studied, spills occurring during the winter and spring have the largest impact with cod being the most heavily impacted followed by haddock and herring. In all cases, the maximum cumulative loss to the fishery of a one time spill event never exceeded 25% of the annual catch with the exact value depending on the number of ichthyoplankton impacted by the spill and the compensatory dynamics of the population. 相似文献
