This paper presents an efficient methodology for computing constant‐ductility inelastic response spectra. The computation of constant‐ductility spectra involves numerical root‐finding algorithms to find the strongest structure providing a desired ductility response. Smooth inelastic structural behavior is modeled using a first‐order nonlinear differential equation and the transient structural response is solved using an implicit algorithm requiring Newton iterations at each time step. For structural models with smooth hysteretic behavior (not piece‐wise linear), a simple root‐finding method involving a combination of hyperbolic fits, linear interpolation, and Newton's method converges upon the highest strength (conservative) solution with a small number of iterations. The effect of the hysteretic smoothness on the occurrence of multiple roots is examined for two near‐fault and two far‐fault earthquake records, and for two measures of ductility and for normalized hysteretic energy. The results indicate how the smoothness of the hysteretic behavior affects ductility demand and constant‐ductility response spectra. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We describe and apply a new helioseismic method for measuring solar subsurface axisymmetric meridional and zonal flow. The method is based on a theoretical model of the response of global-oscillation eigenfunctions to the flow velocity and uses cross spectra of the time-varying coefficients in the spherical-harmonic expansion of the photospheric Doppler-velocity field. Eigenfunction changes modify the leakage matrix, which describes the sensitivity of the spherical-harmonic coefficients to the global-oscillation modes. The form of the leakage matrix in turn affects the theoretically expected spherical-harmonic cross spectra. Estimates of internal meridional and zonal flow were obtained by fitting the theoretical flow-dependent cross spectra to spherical-harmonic cross spectra computed from approximately 500 days of full-disk Dopplergrams from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the SDO spacecraft. The zonal-flow measurements, parameterized in the form of “a” coefficients, substantially agree with measurements obtained from conventional global-mode-frequency analysis. The meridional-flow estimates, in the form of depth-weighted averages of the flow velocity, are similar to estimates obtained from earlier analyses, for oscillation modes that penetrate the outermost one-third of the convection zone. For more deeply penetrating modes, the inferred flow velocity increases significantly with penetration depth, indicating the need for either a modification of the simple conveyor-belt picture of meridional flow or improvement in the cross-spectral model.  相似文献

The reef line fishery (RLF) in eastern Torres Strait (ETS) is unique in that it has both a commercial indigenous sector and a commercial non-indigenous sector. Recently, concerns have been expressed by all stakeholders about the long-term sustainability of the fishery. These concerns have been exacerbated by the lack of detailed catch and effort information from both sectors, which has precluded any formal assessment of the fishery. In this paper, we characterise the harvest patterns and effort dynamics of the indigenous and non-indigenous commercial sectors of the ETS RLF using a range of data sources including commercial logbooks, community freezer records, voluntary logbooks and observer surveys. We demonstrate that bycatch is a significant component of the catch for both sectors and identify substantial differences in harvest patterns and effort dynamics between the sectors. Differences between sectors were observed in species composition and spatial and temporal patterns in catch, effort and catch per unit effort. These results highlight the inherent variation in catch and effort dynamics between the two commercial sectors of the ETS RLF and provide valuable information for the development of future assessments and appropriate management strategies for the fishery. The more reliable estimates of harvest patterns and effort dynamics for both sectors obtained from observer surveys will also assist in resolving issues relating to allocation of reef fish resources in Torres Strait.  相似文献

The loss of manufacturing employment to lower cost economies has meant that countries like the UK have sought to promote innovation in areas such as biotechnology. The emergence of the 'bioeconomy', however, has been highly uneven, with concentrations of activity in certain countries and particular regions in those countries. In the UK, for example, there are four major concentrations of the bioeconomy. CP Tuc (AX J2315–592) shows a dip in X-rays which lasts for approximately half the binary orbit and is deeper in soft X-rays compared with hard X-rays. It has been proposed that this dip is due to the accretion stream obscuring the accretion region from view. If CP Tuc were a polar, as has been suggested, then the length of such a dip would make it unique amongst polars since in those polars in which a dip is seen in hard X-rays the dip lasts for only 0.1 of the orbit. We present optical polarimetry and RXTE observations of CP Tuc which show circular polarization levels of ∼10 per cent and find evidence for only one photometric period. These data confirm CP Tuc as a polar. Our modelling of the polarization data implies that the X-ray dip is due to the bulk of the primary accretion region being self-eclipsed by the white dwarf. The energy dependence of the dip is due to a combination of this self-eclipse and also the presence of an X-ray temperature gradient over the primary accretion region.  相似文献

A nephrite jade deposit within the Great Serpentine Belt of N.S.W., near Tamworth, occurs as several tabular bodies up to 3.5 m thick on the serpentinite country‐rock contact. The occurrence is interpreted as a low‐temperature reaction zone, similar to those observed around Alpine serpentinites elsewhere. The nephrite probably formed as a result of dynamothermal metasomatism associated with the emplacement of serpentinites along the Peel Fault.  相似文献
