Thermal models of planetary atmospheres can be calculated from assumptions of the energy budget of the atmosphere and from the knowledge of the effective temperature of the studied planet. On the other hand, the retrieval of the thermal atmospheric profiles from infrared measurements by means of the numerical inversion of the radiative transfer equation presents the advantages of not requiring such assumptions. The extent of the atmospheric range which can then be sounded is examined and the vertical resolution of the inferred profiles is discussed. Comparisons of thermal models and retrieved thermal profiles are made for the four giant planets. The retrieved profiles lead to brightness temperature spectra which fit all the available infrared measurements fairly well for Jupiter and Saturn but only part of them for Uranus and Neptune. The values of the planetary effective temperatures calculated from the retrieved profiles show that Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune have strong internal heating sources while Uranus probably has a very small or null one. 相似文献

Geological samples from the southern Kerguelen Plateau include Lower Cretaceous basalt and lava breccia, probable Lower Cretaceous conglomerate and shelf limestone, Upper Cretaceous chert with dolomite, Upper Cretaceous-Eocene ooze, and Tertiary conglomerate. Neogene sediments are only a few hundred m thick, and include foraminiferal and diatomaceous ooze, and ice-rafted debris. In conjunction with seismic reflection profiles, the samples indicate Early Cretaceous near-shore volcanism, followed by erosion, sedimentation, and subsidence through Cretaceous; arching of the plateau at the end of Cretaceous; subsidence through Paleogene; widespread emergence in mid-Tertiary; and slow subsidence through Neogene. 相似文献

We have developed a new photochemical model of Titan's atmosphere which includes all the important compounds and reactions in spherical geometry from the surface to 1240 km. Compared to the previous model of Yung et al. (1984, Astrophys. J. Suppl. 55, 465-506), the most significant recent change in the reactions used is the updated methane photodissociation scheme (Mordaunt et al. 1993, J. Chem. Phys. 98(3), 2054-2065). Moreover, the transfer of the solar radiation in the atmosphere and the photolysis rates have been calculated by using a Monte Carlo code. Finally, the eddy diffusion coefficient profile is adjusted in order to fit the mean vertical distribution of HCN retrieved from millimeter groundbased observations of Tanguy et al. (1990, Icarus, 85, 43-57) using new values for the boundary flux of atomic nitrogen (Strobel et al. 1992, Icarus 100, 512-526). We have run the model in both steady-state and diurnal modes, with 62 speices involved in 249 reactions. There is little difference between diurnal and steady-state results. Overall our results are in a closer agreement with the abundances inferred from the Voyager infrared measurements at the equator than the Yung et al. results. We find that the catalytic scheme for H recombination invoked by Yung et al. only slightly improves the model results and we conclude that this scheme is not essential to fit observations. 相似文献

In Central Yakutia, frozen river banks are affected by a combination of thermal and mechanical erosion. Exceptional bank retreat of up to 40 m per year is observed. This results from ground thawing produced by heat transfer from the ?ow of water through the frozen ground, followed by mechanical transport of the thawed sediments. A one‐dimensional model is proposed to estimate the thermal erosion ef?ciency. A test of this model is a comparison of results obtained from experiments carried out in a cold room. A hydraulic channel allows measurements of the thaw front propagation, as well as the thermal erosion rate, in simulated ground ice that is subjected to warm water ?ow. Various laboratory simulations demonstrate the validity of the mathematical model for the range of laboratory conditions. A hierarchy of parameters (Reynolds number, water and ground ice temperatures) is proposed to explain the present ef?ciency of thermal erosion along the Siberian rivers. From the characteristics of the Lena River (geometry, temperature and discharge) during the ?ood season, the erosion of banks with different ice content predicted by the model is in agreement with ?eld observations. The first samples of volcanic basement recovered from the Kerguelen Plateau are Lower Cretaceous transitional tholeiites. Isotope and incompatible element abundance ratios for these rocks are similar to ocean island basalts from the southern hemisphere Dupal anomaly region, and geochemical, geological and geophysical data are consistent with volcanic activity associated with a mantle plume. A reconstruction of plate motions suggests that the Kerguelen Plateau formed above a mantle plume in the interval 118-95 Ma, during the opening of the Indian Ocean between India and Australia-Antarctica. This plume was the source of other plateaus and ridges of the eastern Indian Ocean and possibly the Bunbury Basalt of southwestern Australia, and is now beneath Heard Island. 相似文献

The study investigates interactions, water and sediment exchanges, between a rapidly migrating meander and its associated floodplain at fine temporal and spatial scales. The Beni River, an Amazonian free meandering river, makes the transition between Andean ranges and Amazonian lowlands. For the period 2002–2006, an assemblage of tools and methods (water and sediment discharges, topometric and bathymetric surveys, sedimentation rate estimations from unsupported 210Pb and sediment trapping system) was used to jointly analyse the influence on the sediment budget of external factors (mainly water and sediment discharge) and the inherent behaviour of the system. The main issue addressed is the investigation of the complex relationship between ‘morphological conditioning’ of fluvial landform and process. The first part of the study was undertaken with the aim of linking erosion–deposition in an active meander with water and sediment fluxes. The three inter‐annual evolutions are characterized by very unequal sediment budgets; the first two intervals underwent predominant erosion, and the latter slight accumulation. Digital elevation models, evaluated for the active meander, demonstrate that sedimentation on the point bar depends more on external factors than erosion of the concave bank, which fluctuates slightly. The second part of the study, focusing on water and sediment exchanges between active bend and floodplain, examines the respective parts played by overbank flow and by an abandoned channel on the diffusion and sequestration of sediment. The association of short‐ and long‐term estimation of sedimentation rates suggests that floodplain construction is associated with two different processes and rhythms of sediment transportation. An extension of the seasonal climate model of R. D. Cess and J. Caldwell (1979, Icarus, 38, 349–357) to Saturn's upper troposphere is presented. The ring-modulated latitudinal dependence of the insolation, the ring thermal emission, the oblateness of the planet, the orbit eccentricity, and the latitudinal variation of the internal heat flux are taken into account. Calculations agree closely with the temperature—latitude profiles retrieved from Voyager IRIS measurements at atmospheric levels located above the 0.2-bar pressure level; they reproduce the observed large-scale hemispheric asymmetry which is then shown to result from the seasonally variable insolation. Aerosol absorption is found to be the dominant source of atmospheric solar heating in the troposphere and the model suggests an aerosol mean unit optical depth around the 0.25-bar level in the equatorial region and around the 0.35-bar level at other latitudes. The model fails to predict the retrieved temperature—latitude profiles below the 0.3-bar level. This discrepancy is attributed to the existence of clouds at these levels which are responsible for an additional far-infrared opacity not taken into account in the temperature retrieval. The cloud-top altitude would be about 0.3 bar except in the 20 to 40°N region where these clouds would be confined below the 0.6-bar level. The poor correlation between infrared measurements and visible images is discussed and a possible model of Saturn's cloud structure is proposed. 相似文献
