Absolute elevation error in digital elevation models (DEMs) can be within acceptable National Map Accuracy standards, but still have dramatic impacts on field-level estimates of surface water flow direction, particularly in level regions. We introduce and evaluate a new method for quantifying uncertainty in flow direction rasters derived from DEMs. The method utilizes flow direction values derived from finer resolution digital elevation data to estimate uncertainty, on a cell-by-cell basis, in flow directions derived from coarser digital elevation data. The result is a quantification and spatial distribution of flow direction uncertainty at both local and regional scales. We present an implementation of the method using a 10-m DEM and a reference 1-m lidar DEM. The method contributes to scientific understanding of DEM uncertainty propagation and modeling and can inform hydrological analyses in engineering, agriculture, and other disciplines that rely on simulations of surface water flow.  相似文献

Residential foreclosures increased sharply during the 1990s and in the first years of the twenty-first century. These foreclosures have profound impacts on the households and neighborhoods involved. Although foreclosures occur everywhere, the geography of foreclosures displays a pattern tied to a metropolitan area's social, fiscal, and economic geography. We examine these correspondences as they exist within Summit County (Akron), Ohio, between 2001 and 2003. Foreclosures themselves often result from unfortunate financial events that can affect any household, but we found that the geography of foreclosures corresponds primarily to Summit County's racial distribution, above and beyond any correspondence with income levels and housing fiscal stress. There also exists a clear coincidence of foreclosures with subprime lending, itself associated with Summit County's racial patterns. Concentrations of foreclosures in particular neighborhoods can be tremendously harmful to the social and economic health of the neighborhood. These comparisons help us to better understand the neighborhood ecology of foreclosure rates and subprime lending.  相似文献

A large-scale survey of sediment quality in Biscayne Bay, Florida, was conducted in 1995–1996 to characterize the relative degree, geographic patterns, and spatial extent of degraded sediment quality. Chemical analyses and multiple toxicity tests were performed on 226 surficial sediment samples collected over an area of 484 km2 in greater Biscayne Bay, including saltwater reaches of several tributaries. Benthic samples were collected and analyzed at one-third of the locations. One or more chemical concentrations exceeded effects range median (ERM) values in 35 samples, representing an area of 5.4 km2 (1.1% of the survey area). Highly toxic conditions in amphipod survival tests occurred in 24 of the samples, representing 62 km2 (13% of the area). Highly significant results were more frequently observed in three sub-lethal tests: sea urchin fertilization (affecting 47% of the area), sea urchin embryological development (84% of the area), and microbial bioluminescence (51% of the area). The highest levels of chemical contamination (range in mean ERM quotients of 0.2 to 2.0, average 0.76) were observed in samples from the lower Miami River. The high degree of contamination in the river contrasted sharply with conditions in the bay, where chemical concentrations generally were much lower (range in mean ERM quotients of 0.005 to 0.21, average 0.04). Amphipod survival tests showed a very high degree of correspondence with a gradient in chemical contamination in the river and adjoining reaches of the bay. Correlation analyses, scatter plots, and principal component analyses indicated that both amphipod survival in the laboratory tests and the abundance and diversity of the benthos decreased sharply with increasing concentrations of mixtures of organic compounds and trace metals in the sediments. The triad of analyses provided a strong weight of evidence of pollution-induced degradation of sediment quality in the riverine locations.  相似文献

The ecological importance of Plantago maritima within a salt marsh on the Bay of Fundy is documented through measurements of cover, density, and biomass. During late August 1993, peak standing crops of Plantago were as high as 532 g m?2, and composed as much as 96% of the biomass of a stand of vegetation. Plantago is a dominant component of the marsh vegetation at an elevation just above the Spartina alterniflora-dominated low marsh, and is found as a dominant when growing in association with a number of plant species characteristic of the high marsh. We hypothesize that the existence of this community is dependent upon regular ice-shearing of Spartina patens, which would otherwise competitively exclude Plantago. This hypothesis is supported by the elevational limits of Plantago dominance and the geographical limitation of Plantago communities to portions of the northwestern Atlantic subjected to winter temperatures which average below 0°C.  相似文献

Significant oil and gas accumulations occur in and around Lougheed Island, Arctic Canada, where hydrocarbon prospectivity is controlled by potential source rock distribution and composition. The Middle to Upper Triassic rocks of the Schei Point Group (e.g. Murray Harbour and Hoyle Bay formations) contain a mixture of Types I and II organic matter (Tasmanales marine algae, amorphous fluorescing bituminite). These source rocks are within the oil generation zone and have HI values up to 600 mg HC/g Corg. The younger source rocks of the Lower Jurassic Jameson Bay and the Upper Jurassic Ringnes formations contain mainly gas-prone Type II/III organic matter and are marginally mature. Vitrinite reflectance profiles suggest an effective geothermal gradient essentially similar to the present-day gradient (20 to 30°C/km). Maturation gradients are low, ranging from 0.125 to 0.185 log%Ro/km. Increases in subsidence rate in the Early Cretaceous suggest that the actual heat flow history was variable and has probably diminished from that time. The high deposition rates of the Christopher Formation shales coincide with the main phase of rifting in Aptian-Albian times. Uplift and increased sediment supply in the Maastrichtian resulted in a new sedimentary and tectonic regime, which culminated in the final phase of the Eurekan Orogeny. Burial history models indicate that hydrocarbon generation in the Schei Point Group took place during rifting in Early Cretaceous, long before any Eurekan deformation.  相似文献

A summary of available geochronology of deformational fabrics formed at greenschist and higher grades in the central and southern Appalachians is presented as a map showing the ages of regional metamorphism and ductile deformation. The ca. 480-435 Ma Taconic event affected most of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces. The ca. 380-340 Ma Acadian event was milder and was centered in the west central Piedmont and eastern Blue Ridge. The 330-230 Ma Alleghanian event exhibits an abrupt ductile deformation front in the eastern Piedmont and extends an unknown distance eastward below the Atlantic Coastal Plain.  相似文献

Magmas erupted at the Kane Springs Wash volcanic center record the buildup and decay of a silicic magma chamber within the upper crust between 14.1 and 13.2 Ma ago. Intrusion of a variety of mantle-derived basaltic magmas into the crust sustained the system thermally, but only alkali basalts appear to be parental. Fractionation of alkali basalt, together with 10–20% contamination by partial melts of the lower crust, generated trachyandesite magmas. Mafic trachytes, with magma temperatures of 1,000° C, were initially generated from trachyandesites at depths greater than 15 km. Continued fractionation combined with assimilation of upper crustal melts at a depth of 5–10 km produced more evolved trachytes and high-silica rhyolites. These silicic magmas erupted as the Kane Wash Tuff 14.1 Ma ago from a chamber zoned from fayalite-bearing alkali rhyolite near 820° C at the roof to a trachytic dominant volume. Initial ash flows of the Kane Wash Tuff, Member V1, are metaluminous, whereas later cooling units, Members V2 and V3, are mildly peralkaline and have higher Fe, Zr, and Hf and lower Ca, Th/Ta, Rb/ Zr, and LREE/HREE. Less than 1 % upper crustal component was involved in generation of Members V2 and V3 from trachytic magma. Eruption of 130 km3 of magma resulted in collapse of the Kane Springs Wash caldera. Trachytic magma from deeper levels of the system was extruded onto the caldera floor shortly afterward, forming a central trachyte/syenite complex. Replacement of this magma by hotter, more mafic magma may have induced additional melting of the already heated chamber walls, as high-silica rhyolites that erupted in the moat surrounding the central complex have a large crustal component. Early moat rhyolites had temperatures near 800° C and, in contrast to the Kane Wash Tuff, are ferroedenite-bearing, have higher Al, K/Na, Th/Ta, and Ba, and have lower Fe, REE, and Zr. Fractional crystallization of this magma within the cooling and crystallizing magma chamber formed biotite-bearing rhyolite in isolated pockets. The most evolved of these had temperatures near 700° C, elevated F contents, H2O contents of 5 wt.%, Rb> 500 ppm, chondrite-normalized LREE/HREE <1, and formed vapor-phase topaz. Declining temperatures and Cl/ F from the Kane Wash Tuff through the moat rhyolites may reflect decreasing basalt input into the base of the system and increasing proportions of upper crustal melts in the silicic magmas.  相似文献

The Sierra La Primavera volcanic complex consists of late Pleistocene comenditic lava flows and domes. ash-flow tuff, air-fall pumice, and cold caldera-lake sediments. The earliest lavas were erupted about 120,000 years ago, and were followed approximately 95,000 years ago by the eruption of about 20 km3 of magma as ash flows that form the compositionally-zoned Tala Tuff. Collapse of the roof zone of the magma chamber led to the formation of a shallow 11-km-diameter caldera. It soon filled with water, forming a caldera lake in which sediment began to collect. At about the same time, two central domes erupted through the middle of the lake and a “giant pumice horizon”, an important stratigraphic marker, was deposited. Shortly thereafter ring domes erupted along two parallel arcs: one along the northeast portion of the ring fracture, and the other crossing the middle of the lake. All these events occurred during a period of approximately 5,000–10,000 years. Sedimentation continued and a period of volcanic quiescence was marked by the deposition of some 30 m of fine-grained ashy sediments virtually free from pumice lapilli. Approximately 75,000 years ago, a new group of ring domes erupted at the southern margin of the lake. These domes are lapped by only 10–20 m of sediments, as uplift resulting from renewed insurgence of magma brought an end to the lake. This uplift culminated in the eruption, beginning approximately 60,000 years ago, of aphyric lavas along a southern arc. The youngest of these lavas erupted approximately 20,000–30,000 years ago.The four major fault systems in the Sierra La Primavera are related to caldera collapse or to uplift caused by the insurgence of the southern are magma. Steam vents and larga-discharge 65°C hot springs are associated with the faulting. Calculated equilibrium temperatures of the geothermal fluids are 170°C, but temperatures in excess of 240°C have been encountered in an exploratory drill hole.A seismic survey showed attenuation of both S and P waves within the caldera, P waves attenuated more severely than S waves. The greatest attenuation is associated with an area of steam vents, and the rapid lateral variations in attenuation suggest that they are produced by a shallow geothermal system rather than by underlying magma.  相似文献

This paper explores the applicability of the concept of “multifunctionality” to the south Florida sugar-producing region. Multifunctionality is being promoted in the European Union in response to neoliberal trade pressures in agriculture. It is seen as a way to address social and ecological concerns such as farm abandonment and biodiversity loss through domestic agricultural policies that conform to the GATT/World Trade Organization. I have two objectives in this paper. First, I seek to investigate multifunctionality as one response to neoliberal pressures for agricultural reform. In doing this, I identify two types of multifunctionality, a “weak” and a “strong” version. Second, I want to explore the possibility for multifunctionality to serve as a vehicle for resistance to GATT/WTO in other regions. I do this through a study of arguably the most maligned agricultural zone in the world, the sugar-producing region of south Florida. The specific geographic focus is the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), the federally designated, 700,000-acre zone south of Lake Okeechobee that is home to the Florida “Sugar Bowl.”  相似文献
