We study the solar-cycle variation of subsurface flows from the surface to a depth of 16 Mm. We have used ring-diagram analysis to analyze Dopplergrams obtained with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) Dynamics Program, the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG), and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument. We combined the zonal and meridional flows from the three data sources and scaled the flows derived from MDI and GONG to match those from HMI observations. In this way, we derived their temporal variation in a consistent manner for Solar Cycles 23 and 24. We have corrected the measured flows for systematic effects that vary with disk positions. Using time-depth slices of the corrected subsurface flows, we derived the amplitudes and times of the extrema of the fast and slow zonal and meridional flows during Cycles 23 and 24 at every depth and latitude. We find an average difference between maximum and minimum amplitudes of \(8.6 \pm0.4~\mbox{m}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\) for the zonal flows and \(7.9 \pm0.3~\mbox{m}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\) for the meridional flows associated with Cycle 24 averaged over a depth range from 2 to 12 Mm. The corresponding values derived from GONG data alone are \(10.5 \pm0.3~\mbox{m}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\) for the zonal and \(10.8 \pm0.3~\mbox{m}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\) for the meridional flow. For Cycle 24, the flow patterns are precursors of the magnetic activity. The timing difference between the occurrence of the flow pattern and the magnetic one increases almost linearly with increasing latitude. For example, the fast zonal and meridional flow appear \(2.1 \pm 0.6\) years and \(2.5\pm 0.6\) years, respectively, before the magnetic pattern at \(30^{\circ}\) latitude in the northern hemisphere, while in the southern hemisphere, the differences are \(3.2 \pm 1.2\) years and \(2.6 \pm 0.6\) years. The flow patterns of Cycle 25 are present and have reached \(30^{\circ}\) latitude. The amplitude differences of Cycle 25 are about 22% smaller than those of Cycle 24, but are comparable to those of Cycle 23. Moreover, polynomial fits of meridional flows suggest that equatorward meridional flows (counter-cells) might exist at about \(80^{\circ}\) latitude except during the declining phase of the solar cycle. 相似文献

Reliable estimates of sediment-budget errors are important for interpreting sediment-budget results. Sediment-budget errors are commonly considered equal to sediment-budget imbalances, which may underestimate actual sediment-budget errors if they include compensating positive and negative errors. We modified the sediment ‘fingerprinting’ approach to qualitatively evaluate compensating errors in an annual (1991) fine (<63 μm) sediment budget for the North Halawa Valley, a mountainous, forested drainage basin on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, during construction of a major highway. We measured concentrations of aeolian quartz and 137Cs in sediment sources and fluvial sediments, and combined concentrations of these aerosols with the sediment budget to construct aerosol budgets. Aerosol concentrations were independent of the sediment budget, hence aerosol budgets were less likely than sediment budgets to include compensating errors. Differences between sediment-budget and aerosol-budget imbalances therefore provide a measure of compensating errors in the sediment budget. The sediment-budget imbalance equalled 25 per cent of the fluvial fine-sediment load. Aerosol-budget imbalances were equal to 19 per cent of the fluvial 137Cs load and 34 per cent of the fluvial quartz load. The reasonably close agreement between sediment- and aerosol-budget imbalances indicates that compensating errors in the sediment budget were not large and that the sediment-budget imbalance is a reliable measure of sediment-budget error. We attribute at least one-third of the 1991 fluvial fine-sediment load to highway construction. Continued monitoring indicated that highway construction produced 90 per cent of the fluvial fine-sediment load during 1992. Erosion of channel margins and attrition of coarse particles provided most of the fine sediment produced by natural processes. Abstract— New occurrences of the Acraman impact ejecta layer were recently discovered in two South Australian drillholes, SCYW‐79 1a (Stuart Shelf) and Munta 1 (Officer Basin) using lithostratigraphy, acritarch biostratigraphy, carbon isotope stratigraphy, and biomarker anomalies to predict the stratigraphic position. The ejecta layer is conspicuous because it consists of pink, sandsized, angular fragments of volcanic rock distributed along the bedding plane surface of green marine siltstone. In SCYW‐79 1a it forms a layer 5 mm thick; in Munta 1 the ejecta layer is thin and discontinuous because of its distance (?550 km) from the impact structure. Palynological, biomarker, and carbon isotope anomalies can now be shown to coincide with the ejecta layer in SCYW‐79 1a and Munta 1 suggesting the Acraman impact event may have had far reaching influences on the rapidly evolving Ediacaran biological and geochemical cycles. 相似文献

利用GPS观测资料进行大范围的垂直形变特征研究是本文研究的重点。通过网络工程基准站和基本站的GPS观测资料,绘制了中国大陆的垂直速率等值线图像,并对中国大陆垂直运动特征进行了定性的分析,结果表明:中国大陆垂直运动在70%以上的区域表现为沉降运动,在青藏高原和除北京外的整个华北块体及燕山块体的垂直运动表现为隆升的趋势。中国大陆西北和东南、西南和东北的整体垂直运动呈一种斜对称状态。对基于GPS观测所得的等值线图与基于水观测所得的等值线图进行了比较,比较结果显示,除了华南块体外,二者在整体趋势上比较一致。 相似文献

We explore seismically-induced sand blows from the southern Mississippi Embayment and their implications in resolving the question of near or distal epicentral source region. This was accomplished using aerial photography, field excavations, and cone penetration tests. Our analysis shows that three sand blow fields exhibit a distinct chronology of strong ground motion for the southern embayment: (1) The Ashley County, Arkansas sand blow field, near the Arkansas/Louisiana state border, experienced four Holocene sand venting episodes; (2) to the north, the Desha County field experienced at least three episodes of liquefaction; and (3) the Lincoln–Jefferson Counties field experienced at least one episode. Cone penetration tests (CPT) conducted in and between the sand blow fields suggest that the fields may not be distal liquefaction associated with New Madrid seismic zone earthquakes but rather are likely associated with strong earthquakes on local faults. This conclusion is consistent with the differences in timing of the southern embayment sand venting episodes and those in the New Madrid seismic zone. These results suggest that active tectonism and strong seismicity in intraplate North America may not be localized at isolated weak spots, but rather widespread on fault systems that are favorably oriented for slip in the contemporary stress field. 相似文献

Sediment trend analysis (STA) is a technique that enables patterns of net sediment transport to be determined by relative changes in grain-size distributions of all naturally occurring sediments. In addition, STA can determine the dynamic behaviour of bottom sediments with respect to erosion, accretion or dynamic equilibrium. The data requirements for STA are the full grain-size distributions taken from sediment grab samples collected at a regular spacing over a particular area of interest. Two types of methods are presently used in the derivation of the transport pathways: a line-by-line approach, in which transport pathways are determined by searching for sample sequences in which the distributions change, in a statistically acceptable manner; and various vector approaches, in which each sample is compared to neighbouring sites from which a vector sum is calculated.The basic assumption for STA is that the processes that cause sediment transport will affect the statistics of sediment distributions in a predictable way. In reality, this type of analysis is complicated through the inclusion of a number of uncertainties, or noise. The goal of STA is to extract the information (the transport pathways) from the noisy signal (the grain-size distributions), an approach that is made difficult because neither the nature of the information nor the noise is known. Because of this, obtaining results by simply applying its theory in a “black-box” approach may provide poor solutions.The line-by-line approach to STA draws from communications theory to achieve a solution. In some communications systems, the information from many sources is combined into one signal. The resulting signal is, from a statistical viewpoint, nothing but noise. The extraction of specific information assumes that information is indeed present, and determines if that assumption is consistent with the received signal. For STA, the procedure is to assume a transport direction over an area comprising many sample sites. From this assumption, the predicted sediment trends are compared with the pathways determined by the actual samples. The assumed transport direction is repeatedly modified until the best fit is achieved.Vector techniques may be very helpful to provide insights and guidance to the line-by-line approach. However, the approach is ultimately necessary to finalize a credible solution as well as providing important further information on the dynamic behaviour of the sediments, and to delineate specific sediment transport environments. 相似文献

Fluctuating plume models provide a useful conceptual paradigm in the understanding of plume dispersion in a turbulent flow.
In particular, these models have enabled analytical predictions of higher-order concentration moments, and the form of the
one-point concentration probability density function (PDF). In this paper, we extend the traditional formalism of these models,
grounded in the theory of homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow, to two cases: namely, a simple sheared boundary layer
and a large array of regular obstacles. Some very high-resolution measurements of plume dispersion in a water channel, obtained
using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) line-scan techniques are utilised. These data enable us to extract time series of plume
centroid position (plume meander) and dispersion in the relative frame of reference in unprecedented detail. Consequently,
experimentally extracted PDFs are able to be directly compared with various theoretical forms proposed in the literature.
This includes the PDF of plume centroid motion, the PDF of concentration in the relative frame, and a variety of concentration
moments in the absolute and relative frames of reference. The analysis confirms the accuracy of some previously proposed functional
forms of model components used in fluctuating plume models, as well as suggesting some new forms necessary to deal with the

Interplanetary dust grains entering the Jovian plasmasphere become charged, and those in a certain size range get magneto-gravitationally trapped in the corotating plasmasphere. The trajectories of such dust grains intersect the orbits of one or more of the Galilean satellites. Orbital calculations of micron sized dust grains show that they impact the outermost satellite Callisto predominantly on its leading face, while they impact the inner three — Io, Europa and Ganymede — predominantly on the trailing face. These results are offered as an explanation of the observed brightness asymmetry between the leading and trailing faces of the outer three Galilean satellites. The albedo of Io is likely to be determined by its volcanism. 相似文献
