The authors summarize many of the highlights and accomplishments of the Office of Naval Research's neural network basic research programs and share a bit of the historical perspective that serves as a source of pride in the world of Navy science and technology, namely, the long-term support and resulting payoff of Navy-sponsored research in neural networks. Abstract The Deer Lake Basin is an entirely non-marine basin associated with the Cabot fault zone. Structural and stratigraphic evidence strongly suggest dextral strike-slip movements along the fault zone during Tournaisian-Visean time. Two elongated, end-on structural blocks (probable positive flower structures) contain fold axes and second-order faults oriented obliquely to fault traces bounding the blocks, in a manner implying dextral movements. In one part of the basin, the stratigraphic thickness of a long homoclinal section of later basin-fill sediment (Deer Lake Group) greatly exceeds the suggested depth to basement based on gravity measurements, a situation common to strike-slip basins. Formations representing basin fill can be arranged into megasequences (from oldest to youngest: Anguille Group, Wetstone Point and Wigwam Brook Formations, Deer Lake Group, Howley Formation) corresponding to lateral growth stages of the basin. Gravity, magnetic, and seismic data show that depths to basement on either side of the end-on flower structures are comparable, so that the youngest strata in the basin (Howley Formation) are not underlain by earlier basin fill. These geophysical data, therefore, corroborate the geological conclusion of onlapping stratigraphic relations. The geophysical data suggest participation of basement in Carboniferous gravity faulting and show the location of the subsurface extension of the Taylors Brook Fault in the western part of the Deer Lake Basin. Thermal maturation of the Anguille and Deer Lake Groups, as measured by vitrinite reflectance, clay mineral assemblages, illite crystallinity, and Rock-Eval pyrolysis, indicate a much higher level of maturation for the Anguille than for the Deer Lake Group. Palaeotemperatures for the Anguille and Deer Lake Groups are estimated to be around 200 and 100oC, respectively, suggesting that Anguille Group rocks are overmature whereas Deer Lake Group strata are within the oil-generating window. Onlapping stratigraphic relations and areally homogeneous time/temperature effects, however, have created a situation in which the Deer Lake Group and Howley Formation have similar maturation levels.  相似文献

We propose a new method based on Lie transformations for simplifying perturbed Hamiltonians in one degree of freedom. The method is most useful when the unperturbed part has solutions in non-elementary functions. A non-canonical Lie transformation is used to eliminate terms from the perturbation that are not of the same form as those in the main part. The system is thus transformed into a modified version of the principal part. In conjunction with a time transformation, the procedure synchronizes the motions of the perturbed system onto those of the unperturbed part.A specific algorithm is given for systems whose principal part consists of a kinetic energy plus an arbitrary potential which is polynomial in the coordinate; the perturbation applied to the principal part is a polynomial in the coordinate and possibly the momentum.We demonstrate the strategy by applying it in detail to a perturbed Duffing system. Our procedure allow us to avoid treating the system as a perturbed harmonic oscillator. In contrast to a canonical simplification, our method involves only polynomial manipulations in two variables. Only after the change of time do we start manipulating elliptic functions in an exhaustive discussion of the flows.  相似文献

This study was conducted to estimate macropore space, macropore flow and matrix flow in an experimental forest plot in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. Lateral soil water fluxes and soil capillary potentials were observed in the isolated plot during applied rainfall experiments. Rainfalls were applied 17 times during the period 17 July to 10 October 1991. The subsurface hydrograph separation technique was used to estimate macropore space, macropore flux and matrix flux. The boundary between macropore and matrix flow was statistically determined by covariance analysis. The maximum estimated lateral macropore space was approximately 0.006 (cm3 cm?3). The maximum estimated lateral macropore and matrix flow were 0.042 and 0.00066 cm s?1, respectively. This report also emphasizes the need for further research on the hydrograph separation procedure for estimating macropores and macropore flow.  相似文献

Since 1981 we have been operating the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON), a global network of resonant-scattering spectrometers, observing the low-l solar p modes. Here we discuss historical developments, culminating in the establishment of a 6-station network in 1992 September, and the subsequent performance of that network. The data record of each station from 1992 to 1994 has been analysed in terms of weather and equipment breakdowns. Our early experience suggests that the best long-term coverage possible with a 6-station network is limited in practice to about 80%, which falls short of previous predictions.  相似文献

The Danube Delta-Black Sea region of Romania is an important wetland, and this preliminary study evaluates the significance of this region as a source of atmospheric CH4. Measurements of the mixing ratio and δ13C in CH4 are reported from air and water samples collected at eight sites in the Danube Delta. High mixing ratios of CH4 were found in air (2500–14,000 ppb) and dissolved in water samples (∼1–10 μmol L−1), demonstrating that the Danube Delta is an important natural source of CH4. The intercepts on Keeling plots of about −62‰ show that the main source of CH4 in this region is microbial, probably resulting primarily from acetate fermentation. Atmospheric CH4 and CO data from the NOAA/ESRL (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Earth System Research Laboratory) were used to make a preliminary estimate of biogenic CH4 at the Black Sea sampling site at Constanta (BSC). These data were used to calculate ratios of CH4/CO in air samples, and using an assumed CH4/CO anthropogenic emissions ratio of 0.6, fossil fuel emissions at BSC were estimated. Biogenic CH4 emissions were then estimated by a simple mass balance approach. Keeling plots of well-mixed air from the BSC site suggested a stronger wetland source in summer and a stronger fossil fuel source in winter.  相似文献

Estuarine fish populations are exposed to a variety of environmental conditions that cause both short-term variability and long-term trends in abundance. We analyzed an extensive data set for striped bass (Morone saxatilis) in the San Francisco Estuary to refine our understanding of how environmental variability influences recruitment. We examined the effects of environmental variability during early life stages on subsequent recruitment (age 3 yr), and the degree to which conditions in early life may have contributed to a long-term decline in abundance of adult striped bass in the San Francisco Estuary. Survival from egg to young-of-the-year varied strongly with freshwater flow; this effect apparently occurred within the first week or two of life, a time period that encompasses transport of eggs and larvae from the rivers to rearing areas and the onset of feeding. The rate of freshwater flow to pumping facilities that export freshwater from the system had small or sporadic effects on survival during the first month or two of life. Although many young striped bass between ages 2 and 8 mo were entrained in export pumping facilities, the resulting high mortality was unrelated to total mortality rates determined from field data on young striped bass. This lack of effect was apparently due to strong density-dependent mortality occurring between ages 1 mo and 3 yr (Kimmerer et al. 2000). The available data do not support previously suggested relationships between recruitment and freshwater flow during early life, or between gross estimates of pesticide input and survival of early life stages. We used a simple life-cycle model to show that various combined factors could have led to a decline in adult abundance, particularly a large and increasing adult mortality, but that events early in life probably did not contribute substantially to the decline. These results demonstrate that several decades of monitoring data from numerous life stages are needed to distinguish among alternative hypotheses about environmental influences on populations of estuarine fish.  相似文献

It is not uncommon for more than 90% of the total metal load in rivers to be transported in the solid phase, either sorbed onto particle surfaces and coatings, or incorporated into mineral grains. Fluvial geomorphic processes are therefore of fundamental importance in the transport and fate of heavy metals derived from mine sites. In this paper, the role of physical processes in the dispersal of heavy metals in river systems are reviewed for channels that have (1) remained relatively unchanged in terms of process and form following the introduction of mine wastes, and (2) exhibited a significant metamorphosis in channel form in response to the influx of mining and milling debris. In general, all processes responsible for the variations in metal concentrations within sediments moving through stable channels also operate in channels undergoing metamorphosis. However, downstream, lateral, and vertical patterns in metal values tend to be more complex where channel transformations have occurred. This complexity results, in part, because temporal and spatial changes in the types, rates, and magnitudes of erosional and depositional processes lead to highly variable stratigraphic sequences of post-mining age, and because greater quantities of contaminated debris is stored along the channel margins where it can be eroded and sporadically redistributed during times of flood.  相似文献
