We present new high spatial resolution Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Very Large Array (VLA) observations of a sample of nine low-power ( P 1.4 GHz≤ 1025 W Hz−1) radio hotspots. Infrared/optical emission is definitely detected in four of the nine observed objects, resulting in a detection rate of at least 45 per cent. This emission is interpreted as synchrotron radiation from the electrons accelerated in the hotspots. The integrated spectra of these hotspots reveal typical break frequencies between 105 and 106 GHz, two orders of magnitude higher than typically found in high-power hotspots. This supports the idea that in low-power hotspots with their relatively low magnetic field strengths, electrons emit most of their energy at higher frequencies. A simple spectral ageing analysis would imply that the emitting electrons have been injected into the hotspot volume less than ∼103 years ago. We discuss possible scenarios to explain the lack of older electrons in the hotspot region. In particular, the extended morphology of the near-infrared/optical emission would suggest that efficient re-acceleration mechanisms rejuvenate the electron populations. 相似文献
New radio and X-ray data are reported for the rich cluster Abell 2319. This object is known from optical data to consist of two separate clusters, which are displaced by about 10′ in the NW direction, and could be in a pre-merger state.
In the radio domain, the cluster is characterized by the presence of a central diffuse halo source, more extended and powerful than the prototype halo in the Coma cluster. The radio halo shows an irregular structure, elongated in the NE-SW direction, and also extended towards the NW. We also report data on the extended radio galaxies located within the halo, or in its proximity.
The cluster X-ray brightness distribution shows an elongated structure towards the NW, in the radial region between 6′–12′, i.e. in the direction of the subcluster. This feature is exactly coincident with the NW extension of the radio halo. In addition, more substructural features are identified which could be due to an ongoing merger of the cluster with yet another mass component.
The radio halo morphology is correlated with the X-ray structure and the existence of merger processes in the cluster. The cluster merger can provide energy to maintain the radio halo, while the origin of the relativistic particles seems more problematic. 相似文献
We present the results of a CCD monitoring campaign of the continuum emission from the central region of the Crab nebula, amounting to 17 epochs spread over 3.5 years. The data provide clear evidence that the brightest wisps move outward from the pulsar at mildly relativistic velocities. This motion, combined with the shape of the wisps, supports the idea that they arise at a standing shock in an equatorial wind. The deprojected velocity of the wisps in the equatorial plane is c/3. We see only small changes in the so-called ‘thin wisps’ which leads us to suggest that these wisps may be the result of a back-flow from the shock in a toroidal cavity around the pulsar. 相似文献
We present the results of the preliminary study of the comet Hale-Bopp spectrum obtained April 17, 1997 by K. Churyumov and F. Mussayev with the help of the 1-meter Zeiss reflector and the echelle spectrometer (spectral resolutionλ/Δ λ ≈ 50000), CCD and the long slit, oriented along the radius-vector(“Sun-comet direction”). Energy distributions for three selected regions including the C3, C2 (0-0) and CN(Δ ν = 0) molecules emissions of the comet Hale-Bopp spectrum were built. The rotational lines of the CN(Δ ν = 0) band were identified. The nature of the high emission peak near λ 4020 Å in the C3 band is discussed. The presence of the cometary continuum of the nonsolar origin is assumed. 相似文献
ISLA will be an astronomical observatory, operating at the upper limit of our planet Earth atmosphere, offering space like
observing conditions in most aspects. ISLA can be maintained easily, modified easily if necessary, always kept at the state
of the art and operated for very extended periods without polluting the stratosphere. ISLA is ideally suited to become the
first world space observatory as the observing conditions are very much space-like – diffraction limited angular resolution,
very low ambient temperature, remote control – however ISLA is easily accessible, telescopes and instruments can be continuously
improved and ISLA's costs corresponds only to those of ground-based modern astronomical installations like the ESO-VLT-, KECK-
and GEMINI-observatories. The cost of observing and experimenting on ISLA will be orders of magnitudes lower than those of
building and operating any space telescope, allowing the astronomers of developing nations to participate in the ISLA observatory
within their limited financial possibilities as competent and full partners. ISLA's 4-m and 2-m telescopes will operate diffraction
limited from 0.3 μm in the optical, over the infrared, far-infrared to the sub-mm spectral range. ISLA's individual telescopes
will permit imaging with 20 milli-arcsec spatial resolution in the optical, 5 times better than the Hubble Space Telescope.
ISLA's telescopes can be combined to form an interferometer with a maximum baseline of 250 m with nearly complete coverage
of the u,v plane. Interferometric resolution will be of the order of 20 micro-arcsec for the optical. ISLA will thus offer
spatial resolution comparable or better than the intercontinental VLBI radio interferometers. ISLA's telescope efficiency
will be many orders of magnitude better than comparable ground-based telescopes. The light collecting power of ISLA's interferometric
telescopes will be orders of magnitudes greater than the future space interferometers under discussion. ISLA, being an aviation
project and not a space project, can be realised in the typical time scale for the development of aviation: about 5 years.
ISLA's cost for the whole observatory, including its movable ground station etc. will be of the order of a typical medium
size ESA space mission. ISLA's lifetime will be in excess of many decades, as it can easily be maintained, modernised, repaired
and improved. ISLA will become the origin of a new astronomical international organisation with worldwide participation. ISLA's
telescopes will be of the greatest importance to all astronomical fields, as it will permit to study much fainter, much more
distant objects with microscopic spatial resolution in wavelength regions inaccessible from ground. ISLA's many telescopes
permit easily simultaneous observations at many wavelengths for rapidly varying objects, from continuously monitoring the
surfaces of the planets in our solar system, surfaces of close-by stars, nuclei of galaxies to QSO's.

We present OH 18-cm observations of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) at the Nançay radio telescope. On nucleus and offset position observations allowed us to obtain both OH production rates and quenching radii. The maximum OH production rate was reached around perihelion, at about1031 s-1. 相似文献
Optical light curves of three blazars are analyzed by Hurst’s method of normalized range. It is shown that Hurst’s empirical
relationship is satisfied for these curves, in accordance with which the Hurst parameters are found for each curve. Assuming
that blazar light curves have self-affinity, they determine the fractal dimensionality of the curves to be D ≈ 1.1.

Correlations between photon currents from separate light-collectors provide information on the shape of the source. When the light-collectors are well separated, for example in space, transmission of these currents to a central correlator is limited by band-width. We study the possibility of compression of the photon fluxes and find that traditional compression methods have a similar chance of achieving this goal compared to compressed sensing. 相似文献
