Rapid shifts in past climate recorded in polar ice sheets have elicited various explanations relating to either thermohaline
circulation changes by ice-rafting or natural greenhouse gas concentrations modulated by climatic conditions in the tropics.
To compare the tropical paleoclimate record with the polar record, one must choose sediment cores from highly productive ocean
regions. Necessarily, such regions reflect the wind records in the tropics, because high productivity is associated with upwelling
driven by winds. Comparing tropical precipitation records with high-latitude records is, however, a more difficult task because
sediments recording paleoprecipitation usually have low sedimentation rates, and offer coarser resolution relative to polar
ice cores. Here, we present δ
18O data of three planktonic species of Foraminifera (a proxy for precipitation) from such a sediment core, spanning the past
35 ka for the equatorial Indian Ocean, which falls under the southwest monsoon (SWM) realm. Results show that minimum SWM
precipitation occurred at the Last Glacial Maximum, with a subsequent increase at Termination IA. During the Holocene, SWM
precipitation intensified uniformly up to the core top (∼2.2 ka b.p.), as revealed by generally decreasing δ
18O values. Variations in precipitation are consistent with climate changes recorded in polar ice sheets. Although the different resolutions of the two records preclude
a rigorous comparison, abrupt cooling/warming events appear to be accompanied by sudden reduction/enhancement in (SWM) rainfall.
Thus, mechanisms with time scales much shorter than a millennium, such as natural greenhouse warming (e.g., CH4 concentration), controlled by emissions from the tropics, could have played a major role in high-latitude climate change. 相似文献

The basic properties of the dynamic model of a turbulent jet formed by a deep-water sewage discharge into the stratified environment of coastal regions are considered. The model developed was used to estimate the parameters of a floating-up jet of deep wastewater discharge from Sand Island into the basin of Mamala Bay (Hawaii) depending on the season and discharge operation mode. The estimates of the float-up depths of the jet and the initial dilution of the jet were estimated on the basis of model calculations using experimental data on the vertical profiles of the water temperature and salinity under the actual conditions of stratification in the study region. It is shown that the further propagation of the wastewater jet depends on tidal events and internal waves generated by tides. The appearance of turbulent jets at the sea surface was recorded. The model estimates of the parameters of the wastewater discharge were compared with the results of experimental measurements. Good agreement was found, which indicates that the physical mechanisms of the propagation of turbulent jets in a stratified medium are adequately described by the model. 相似文献

Magnetic anomalies over Iceland, measured by Serson et al. (1968), are similar in shape and amplitude to those found over mid-oceanic ridges in general and over Reykjanes Ridge in particular. However, the geology of Iceland does not favour the simple model of sea floor spreading as formulated by Vine and Matthews. The Brunhes period volcanism can neither in place nor in time be related to an opening process of the Central Graben, which actually is a downthrown block and not an opening rift. Furthermore, the structure of Iceland is not symmetric with respect to the Central Graben. The geology of the Central Graben of Iceland does support a model proposed by Thorleifur Einarsson in 1967. In this model elongate ridges of pillow lavas are thought to have piled up on top of parallel volcanic fissures. The actual spreading is negligible. The fissures have been opening at random over a width of about 120 km, and no definite time scale can be set up for the associated magnetic anomalies. This conflict between Icelandic geology and the current views on sea floor spreading, can be evaded by supposing that the mere circumstance that Iceland is an island obscures a spreading process underneath. One might also postulate that Iceland nevertheless should stand as an example of a mid-oceanic ridge which implies that our ideas on sea floor spreading should be thoroughly revised. 相似文献

Tropospheric lapse rate and its relation to surface temperature from reanalysis data 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Estimates of the tropospheric lapse rate γ and analysis of its relation to the surface temperature T s in the annual cycle and interannual variability have been made using the global monthly mean data of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis (1948–2001). The tropospheric lapse rate γ is about 6.1 K/km in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) as a whole and over the ocean and about 6.2 K/km over the continents. The value of γ decreases from 6.5 K/km at low latitudes to 4.5 K/km at polar latitudes. The values of dγ/dT s, the parameter of sensitivity of γ to the variation of T s for the NH in the interannual variability, are found to be about 0.04 km?1 (0.041 km?1 for the NH as a whole, 0.042 km?1 over the ocean, and 0.038 km?1 over the continents). This corresponds to an increase in γ of approximately 0.7% when the surface temperature of the NH is increased by 1 K. Estimates of dγ/dT s vary from about 0.05 km?1 in the subtropics to 0.10 km?1 at polar latitudes. When dγ/dT s is positive, the surface and tropospheric warming means a temperature decrease above a certain critical level H cr. The height of the level H cr with constant temperature, which is defined by the inverse value (dγ/dT s)?1, is about 25 km for the NH as a whole, i.e., above the tropopause. In the subtropics, H cr is about 20 km. At polar latitudes, H cr decreases to about 10 km. Positive values of dγ/dT s characterize a positive climatic feedback through the lapse rate and indicate a general decrease in the static stability of the troposphere during global warming. Along with a general tendency of γ to increase with rising T s, there are regional regimes with the opposite tendency, mainly over the ocean. The negative correlation of γ with T s is found over the oceanic tropics and midlatitudes, in particular, over the oceanic belt around Antarctica. 相似文献
