Abstract

Statistical tests have been widely used for several decades to identify and test the significance of trends in runoff and other hydrological data. The Mann-Kendall (M-K) trend test is commonly used in trend analysis. The M-K test was originally proposed for random data. Several variations of the M-K test, as well as pre-processing of data for use with it, have been developed and used. The M-K test under the scaling hypothesis has been developed recently. The basic objective of the research presented in this paper is to investigate the trends in Malaysian monthly runoff data. Identification of trends in runoff data is useful for planning water resources projects. Existence of statistically significant trends would also lead to identification of possible effects of climate change. Monthly runoff data for Malaysian rivers from the past three decades are analysed, in both five-year segments and entire data sequences. The five-year segments are analysed to investigate the variability in trends from one segment to another in three steps: (1) the M-K tests are conducted under random and correlation assumptions; (2) the Hurst scaling parameter is estimated and tested for significance; and (3) the M-K test under the scaling hypothesis is conducted. Thus the tests cover both correlation and scaling. The results show that the number of significant segments in Malaysian runoff data would be the same as those found under the assumption that the river flow sequences are random. The results are also the same for entire sequences. Thus, monthly Malaysian runoff data do not have statistically significant trends. Hence there are no indications of climate change in Malaysian runoff data.

An evaluation of the wave-induced pore pressures and effective stresses has been recognized by marine geotechnical engineers as an important factor in the design of marine pipelines. Most previous investigations for such a problem have considered the pipeline as a rigid material. Thus, the internal stresses within the pipeline have not been examined in the wave–seabed–pipe interaction problem. In this paper, we consider the pipeline itself to be an elastic material, and link the analysis of the pipeline with the wave–seabed interaction problem. Based on the numerical model presented, the effects of pipe geometry and variable soil characteristics on the wave-induced pore pressure and internal stresses will be discussed in detail. It is found that the internal normal stresses in the angular direction (σpθ) and shear stress (τp) within the pipe are much larger than the amplitude of wave pressure at the surface of the seabed.  相似文献

The need to investigate the level of seismic pounding risk of buildings is apparent in future building code calibrations. In order to provide further insight into the pounding risk of adjacent buildings, this study develops a numerical simulation approach to estimate the seismic pounding risk of adjacent buildings separated by a minimum code‐specified separation distance during a certain period of time. It has been demonstrated that the period ratio of adjacent buildings is an important parameter that affects the pounding risk of adjacent buildings. However, there is no specific consideration for the period ratio in the related seismic pounding provisions of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. Results also reveal that, for two adjacent buildings, the probability distribution of required distance to avoid seismic pounding fits very well with the type I extreme value distribution. Finite element modelling for water waves-soil interaction   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The soil permeability and shear modulus of many marine sediments vary with depth because of consolidation under overburden pressure. However, conventional theories for wave-induced soil response have assumed a homogeneous porous seabed, with constant soil permeability and shear modulus. This paper presents a finite element model for the wave-induced soil response in a porous seabed, with variable permeability and shear modulus as a function of burial depth. The soil matrix considered here is unsaturated and hydraulically anisotropic, and subjected to a three-dimensional short-crested wave system. The present finite element formulation is established by using a combination of semi-analytical techniques and the Galerkin method. The nodal effective stresses directly derived from the governing equations can be calculated accurately in the present model. Verification is available through the reduction to the simple case of homogeneous seabed. Three typical marine materials, course, fine sand and gravel, are considered in this study. The numerical results indicate that the soil permeability affects the wave-induced seabed response significantly especially for gravelled seabed, as does the soil shear modulus for sandy seabed.  相似文献

An accurate estimation of scour depth around piles is important for coastal and ocean engineers involved in the design of marine structures. Owing to the complexity of the problem, most conventional approaches are often unable to provide sufficiently accurate results. In this paper, an alternative attempt is made herein to develop adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) models for predicting scour depth as well as scour width for a group of piles supporting a pier. The ANFIS model provides the system identification and interpretability of the fuzzy models and the learning capability of neural networks in a single system. Two combinations of input data were used in the analyses to predict scour depth: the first input combination involves dimensional parameters such as wave height, wave period, and water depth, while the second combination contains nondimensional numbers including the Reynolds number, the Keulegan–Carpenter number, the Shields parameter and the sediment number. The test results show that ANFIS performs better than the existing empirical formulae. The ANFIS predicts scour depth better when it is trained with the original (dimensional) rather than the nondimensional data. The depth of scour was predicted more accurately than its width. A sensitivity analysis showed that scour depth is governed mainly by the Keulegan–Carpenter number, and wave height has a greater influence on scour depth than the other independent parameters.  相似文献

The topic of wave-seabed interaction is important for civil engineers with regard to stability analysis of foundations for offshore structures. Most previous investigations of such problems have simply assumed a seabed with uniform permeability, even if the evidence of variable permeability has been reported in the literature. This paper presents a finite-element model for investigating the wave-induced seabed response in a porous seabed, with variable permeability as a function of burial depth. The present finite formulation is established by using a combination of semi-analytical techniques and the Galerkin method. Based on the present numerical model, together with the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the wave-induced seabed instability is estimated. The numerical results indicate that variable permeability affects the wave-induced seabed instability significantly, especially for gravelled seabeds.  相似文献

Most previous investigations for the wave-induced soil response have only considered the quasi-static soil behavior under linear wave loading. However, it is expected that the dynamic soil behavior and wave non-linearity will play an important role in the evaluation of wave-induced seabed response. In this paper, we include dynamic soil behavior and wave non-linearity into new analytical models. Based on the analytical solution derived, the effects of wave non-linearity on the wave-induced seabed response with dynamic soil behavior are examined. Numerical results demonstrate the significant effects of wave non-linearity and dynamic soil behavior on the wave-induced effective stresses. The applicable range of dynamic and quasi-static approximations is also clarified for engineering practice.  相似文献

In this paper, frequency domain dynamic response of a pile embedded in a half‐space porous medium and subjected to P, SV seismic waves is investigated. According to the fictitious pile methodology, the problem is decomposed into an extended poroelastic half‐space and a fictitious pile. The extended porous half‐space is described by Biot's theory, while the fictitious pile is treated as a bar and a beam and described by the conventional 1‐D structure vibration theory. Using the Hankel transformation method, the fundamental solutions for a half‐space porous medium subjected to a vertical or a horizontal circular patch load are established. Based on the obtained fundamental solutions and free wave fields, the second kind of Fredholm integral equations describing the vertical and the horizontal interaction between the pile and the poroelastic half‐space are established. Solution of the integral equations yields the dynamic response of the pile to plane P, SV waves. Numerical results show the parameters of the porous medium, the pile and incident waves have direct influences on the dynamic response of the pile–half‐space system. Significant differences between conventional single‐phase elastic model and the poroelastic model for the surrounding medium of the pile are found. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A short sediment core with a length of approximately 40 cm taken from the anoxic Tan-Shui estuary, Taiwan, was analysed for extractable and bound coprostanol (5β-cholestan-3β-ol), cholestanol (5α-cholestan-3β-ol) and cholesterol (cholest-5-en-3β-ol). Extractable Σcoprostanol and cholestanol concentrations exhibit an abrupt change at a depth of about 20 cm, which supposedly marks the time when a sewage treatment plant became operational in the estuary in 1980. The Σcoprostanol/cholesterol and cholestanol/cholesterol ratios are comparatively higher in sediment than in the sewage effluent, implying some degree of diagenesis in the extractable phase. Anoxicity must have played a crucial role in the preservation and diagenesis of the sterols. In the upper layer (c. top 20 cm), the concentrations of extractable Σcoprostanol, normalized to total organic carbon (TOC), increase down the core. Extractable cholestanol exhibits the same trend, but extractable cholesterol shows the opposite trend. This indicates cholesterol reduction to these two stanols. In addition, both bound Σcoprostanol/TOC and cholestanol/TOC display a decreasing trend with core depth and no pronounced concentration change at 20 cm depth. The averages of percent bound sterols are in the following order: cholesterol > coprostanol>cholestanol.  相似文献
