The south-eastern Bohemian Massif consolidated during the Late Variscan orogeny by the oblique collision of two continental crustal blocks after closure of an oceanic realm. One microcontinent comprises portions which are now distributed among Moravian and Moldanubian units and which are characterized by Late Proterozoic tectonothermal events, especially by granitoid intrusions. The other microcontinent includes the Gföhl gneiss and granulites (Gföhl nappe) of probable Early Palaeozoic protolith ages. Both continental blocks are separated by an ophiolite-like assemblage, which is preserved in portions of the Raabs unit.Oblique crustal stacking is accompanied by north-eastward propagation of nappes in a dextral transpressive regime. Exhumation of previously thickened crust is achieved by equally oriented bulk extension but partitioned in distinct displacement paths. A chemical and mineralogical study of the innermost rindlets of a spheroidally weathered boulder from the Wichita Mountains, Oklahoma details incipient alteration of minerals along solution channels. Alteration products in plagioclase areas are highly aluminous, whereas ferruginous residuum is commonly found in olivine alteration zones. Alteration of plagioclase along solution channels results in sharp weathering contacts as contrasted with wider zones of “limonite” bordering solution channels in olivine. In certain instances, cores of fresh olivine are surrounded by limonite indicating that diffusion may play a role in this type of alteration.Mobility of sesquioxides is evidenced by aluminum-rich debris adjacent to mafic materials in solution channels and iron-bearing material in channels cutting through plagioclase. Not resolved is whether the movement of sesquioxides in solution channels is by transport of colloidal particulates or by diffusion of dissolved species.Calcic plagioclase alters to calcite along the innermost solution channel. It is postulated that solution, exterior to the boulder and undersaturated with respect to calcite, enters the rind system via solution channels. Cut off from the CO2 reservoir of the atmosphere by the narrow confines of this solution channel, the solution reacts with the bytownite to precipitate calcite.Apart from the occurrence of calcite, no crystalline weathering products were found in the innermost rindlet samples. A poorly crystallized illite was identified in the outermost rindlet. These findings suggest that initial alteration products on weathering rinds are amorphous and that, with time, these products attain a degree of identifiable crystallinity.  相似文献

Alfred E. Bergeat, originated from a family, who produced gold-glance in a factory (porcelain painting), studied mineralogy and geology at the University of Munich from 1886 to 1892. Due to the results of his habilitation work on the volcanism of island arcs, especially of the Stromboli volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, he became a recognized volcanologist and specialist in volcanic petrography. He further became an explorer of syngenetic, epigenetic and deuterogenic ore deposits at the mining academies (Bergakademien) of Freiberg (Saxony) and Clausthal (Harz mountains). He described these ore deposits in a two-volume manual (1904–1906) which was summarized again in 1913. After his early death in 1924, the two manuals “Die Vulkane” (1925) and “Vulkankunde” (1927) were posthumously published by his colleague and friend Karl Sapper (1866–1945).  相似文献

Long chain alkenones (LCA) are temperature-sensitive lipids with great potential for quantitative reconstruction of past continental climate. We conducted the first survey for alkenone biomarkers from 55 different lakes in the Northern Great Plains and Nebraska Sand Hills of the United States. Among those surveyed, we found 13 lakes that contain LCAs in the surface sediments. The highest concentrations of alkenones in sediments are found in cold (mean annual air temperature ∼11 °C versus 17 °C in our warmest sites), brackish to mesosaline (salinity = 8.5-9.7 g/L), and alkaline (pH = 8.4-9.0) lakes with high concentrations of sodium and sulfate. The dynamics of stratification and nutrient availability also appear to play a role in LCA abundance, as early spring mixing promotes a bloom of alkenone-producing haptophytes. Four of the alkenone-containing sites contain the C37:4 alkenone; however, we discovered an unprecedented lacustrine alkenone distribution in a cluster of lakes, with a total absence of C37:4 alkenone. We attribute this unusual composition to a different haptophyte species and show that the sulfate:carbonate ratio may control the occurrence of these two distinct populations. We created a new in-situ temperature calibration for lacustrine sites that contain C37:4 using a water-column calibration from Lake George, ND and show that is linearly correlated to lake water temperature (R2 = 0.74), but is not. A number of lakes contain an unidentified compound series that elutes close to the LCAs, highlighting the importance of routine GC-MS examination prior to using lacustrine LCAs for paleotemperature reconstructions.  相似文献

Data obtained from low‐temperature thermochronometers such as apatite fission‐track and (U‐Th)/He are combined with morphometric information extracted from digital elevation models. This combination shows several geomorphological effects that are caused by the migration of the Nazca Ridge along the Peruvian Coastal margin. Offshore, the depth of the deep‐sea trench decreases by ~1500 m where the Nazca Ridge collides with the continental South American Plate. Onshore the ridge causes an uplift of at least 800 m in the Coastal Cordillera. This uplift results in a westward shift of the coastline thereby focusing and increasing erosion in the uplifted areas. At the trailing edge, the shelf subsides and the coastline retreats eastwards, producing at least part of the indentation observed between Paita and Pisco. The Ridge acts therefore like a wave uplifting the Andean margin as it traverses inland and southwards leaving a clear fingerprint on the topographic evolution of the Peruvian coastal margin.  相似文献

Near-infrared adaptive optics as well as fringe tracking for coherent beam combination in optical interferometry require the development of high-speed sensors. Because of the high speed, a large analog bandwidth is required. The short exposure times result in small signal levels which require noiseless detection. Both requirements cannot be met by state-of-the-art conventional CMOS technology of near-infrared arrays as has been attempted previously. A total of five near-infrared SAPHIRA 320 × 256 pixel HgCdTe eAPD arrays have been deployed in the wavefront sensors and in the fringe tracker of the VLTI instrument GRAVITY. The current limiting magnitude for coherent exposures with GRAVITY is mk = 19, which is made possible with ADP technology. New avalanche photo-diode array (APD) developments since GRAVITY include the extension of the spectral sensitivity to the wavelength range from 0.8 to 2.5 μm. After GRAVITY a larger format array with 512 × 512 pixels has been developed for both AO applications at the ELT and for long integration times. Since dark currents of <10−3 e/s have been demonstrated with 1Kx1K eAPD arrays and 2Kx2K eAPD arrays have already been developed, the possibilities and adaptations of eAPD technology to provide noiseless large-format science-grade arrays for long integration times are also discussed.  相似文献
