Fluxes of particulate carbon, nitrogen, phytoplankton pigments, biogenic silica and dry mass were measured using free-floating and moored sediment trap arrays in the Santa Monica Basin during the period from October 1985 to August 1990 as part of the California Basin Study (CaBS) Program. In field testing for potential sources of sediment trap biases, we found little significant or consistent difference in rate estimates between short-term drifting traps and long-term moored traps, between preserved and unpreserved traps in short-term experiments, between different preservatives (mercury or formalin) in long-term experiments, between different designs of small cylindrical traps, and between deep-moored cylindrical traps and large conical traps. We did, however, find that sediment trap samples collected and analyzed on 0.45 μm silver filters gave estimates of carbon and nitrogen fluxes about 25% higher than samples collected on GF/F glass-fiber filters. Concurrent trap deployments at two stations 18km apart revealed low mesoscale variability in flux estimates. Seasonal patterns in carbon and nitrogen flux were not evident in our data, but strong seasonality, with spring maxima and summer minima, were observed for fluxes of phaeopigments and biogenic silica out of the euphotic zone.Time-averaged rates of particulate flux for long-term trap deployments from January to August 1990, were 121, 18.8, 1.5, 67 and 633mg m−2d−1 at 110–135m for carbon, nitrogen, phaeopigment, biogenic silica and mass, respectively. Flux estimates to the basin floor (835–860m) were 50, 6.5, 0.64, 41.6 and 575mg m−2d−1 for the same parameters. The former estimates are constrained by and in good agreement with independent assessments of new production from nitrate uptake in the euphotic zone. The latter agree with rates previously inferred from the sedimentary record using 210Pb as a tracer. In addition, the difference in carbon estimates in the water column between the euphotic zone and the basin floor is consistent with the requirements for bacterial growth and metabolism at intermediate depths as measured by the thymidine method.  相似文献

The flux and compositions of solvent-extractable lipid fractions were measured in particulate matter collected periodically by moored sediment traps in the Santa Monica Basin from 1985–1988. The purpose was to assess the compositional changes during settling, the carbon dynamics in the basin and to estimate the impacts of energy-related by-products on the surface sediments. Sediment traps recorded consistently high lipid fluxes in the eastern slope relative to the central basin, reflecting elevated terrigenous carbon inputs possibly from land-based human activities. Generally, lipid fluxes decrease offshore but increase vertically with water depth below 500m, implying lateral transport of particles. The steep decline of flux in the top 500m of the water is related to the rapid decomposition and mineralization of the marine-derived cellular carbon compounds. Less than 5% of the marine lipid components reach the seabed. In contrast, preferential preservation of terrigenous lipid is clearly evident from the chemistry of deeper traps and surface sediments.The lateral transport of particles is reflected in the presence of higher plant-derived lignin phenols and sewage-derived coprostanol and epicoprostanol in the deep trap material as well as in surface sediment throughout the basin. Petroleum triterpanes characteristic of natural seepage also permeates through the entire basin. Based on the data collected from both the trap particulte matter and surface sediments, a carbon budget for the Santa Monica Basin has been constructed.  相似文献

It is a great honour to be awarded the Oceanographical Society of Japan Prize for 1988 and to be provided with this opportunity to review our work on trophic relations in the pelagic environment of the sea. Many Japanese colleagues have participated in Canada on our experiments. These persons include Drs. H. Seki, M. Takahashi, A. Hattori, T. Ikeda, I. Koike, M. Ohtsu, S. Ichimura, K. Iseki, E. Matsumoto, N. Handa, Y. Maita, and others without whom our work on marine ecosystems would have assumed much less importance. In addition, the visit of Professor M. Uda to Nanaimo in 1959, and his lectures on fisheries oceanography, have always been an inspiration to me in the practical application of oceanography. For me, work on trophodynamic relationships grew out of my early association with Dr. J.D.H. Strickland who initiated some ecosystem studies using large plastic bags in the 1960s (Strickland and Terhune, 1961; Strickland, 1967). The CEPEX program (e.g. Parsons, 1978), which was started about a decade later, gave us the first real opportunity to break away from laboratory studies, where only species which generally grew best were studied, and to perform studies under near natural conditions on multiorganism communities. The purpose of this program was to provide some answers to practical problems as well as to gain a fundamental understanding of biological oceanographic processes. This program was started at a time when a large number of stories were circulating (e.g. Heyerdahl, 1975) that man was about to kill life in the oceans through pollution. In a practical sense what I believe that the CEPEX program showed was that the oceans were much more resilient than had been supposed. The effect of many kinds of pollutants tested during this program was to change the course of ecosystem interactions but not to cause the elimination of life. The scientific value of these experiments went much further in giving us time series data about how the physical/chemical environment interacts with different trophic levels. For the first time, the biological oceanographer was liberated from the hopeless entanglement of time and space in the sea, and it was now possible to follow population dynamics of planktonic organisms (Mullin, 1982). The biogeochemistry of organic matter in a macrotidal estuary, the Loire, France, has been studied for two years during different seasons. Both particulate matter and sediment have been sampled in the riverine zone, in the maximum turbidity zone and in the ocean near the river mouth. Two techniques have been used: carbon isotopic ratio determination and analysis of lipid-marker signatures in the n-alkane, n-alkene and fatty acid series. For the period corresponding to the output of the maximum turbidity zone in the ocean, the complete change of organic matter, continental in nature in the inner estuary, pure marine in the outer estuary is well illustrated by the decrease of δ13C values and of carbon preference index of n-alkanes. Input sources of organic matter by continental plants, plankton and micro-organisms are discussed from biogeochemical-marker analyses data along with the processes of accumulation of particles and their evolution with the season. Some criteria for evidencing the nature of various organic-matter pools are assessed and compared in different chemical-marker series as follows: high molecular weight n-alkanes and fatty acids, perylene for continental imprints, polyunsaturated 18-, 20- and 22-carbon fatty acids, n-C17, n-alkenes and squalene for algae imprints, branched iso and anteiso fatty acids, Δ11-C18:1 for microbial imprints.  相似文献

ANGUS photographs and ALVIN observational data from Fracture Zones A and B on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 37°N were examined for structural and sedimentological indications of the area's tectonics. Both transform fault zones are characterized by volcanic rubble, breccias, chalks, and undisturbed sediments typical of slow-slipping transforms.The photographic data consist of 16 camera-sled traverses from the FAMOUS Expedition using the ANGUS deep-towed camera system. These data cover several different morphotectonic provinces along the strike of both slow-slipping (2 cm yr-1) fracture zones. ALVIN data come from two dives in the central part of Fracture Zone B. The two fracture zones differ in their distribution of fractured and sheared chalks which indicate regions of strike-slip deformation along the transform. Evidence of shearing is confined to a very narrow region in the center of FZ A, whereas the zone of shear deformation is as much as 6 km wide across FZ B. Other differences include the morphology and depth of the transform valleys and their contiguous nodal basins and the extent of exposures of fresh-looking volcanic ridges in the nodal basin.  相似文献

The mechanical cable is an essential element in towing operations, remote control of equipment, salvage operations, civil engineering applications, etc.Failure of these cables can result in loss of life and loss of equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Obviously then, sensors that can indicate the condition of these cables so that the risk to their continued use and their remaining safe life can be determined when in operation are very important from the point of view of commercial and military interest.This paper presents a brief review of research into failure mechanisms of various cables and the acoustic emission signatures of the various cables under simulated loading. The development of a specific operational monitor for a towed cable system is also given.  相似文献

Near-bottom normal incidence acoustic reflection data and sediment physical property data are used to study the relationships between acoustic reflections and sediment physical properties. A pinger-hydrophone experiment was performed to obtain the necessary acoustic reflection data. In addition, a standard piston core was retrieved in the acoustic survey area for physical property analysis. The piston core was sampled and 13 properties were measured at 55 locations within the top 12 m of the core. Correlation studies amongst the sediment physical properties resulted in the following strong correlations: acoustic impedance (Z) and porosity (N), (0.96); water content (WC) and Z, (0.95); bulk density (BD) and Z, (0.99).The empirical orthonormal function (EOF) method was employed for acoustic signal analysis. This method assumes no a-priori models of the sediment or causality. The EOF method reduced the acoustic data to 8 functions that contained 97.6% of the sample variance. The EOFs were subsequently analysed by using cepstrum analysis which reveals time delay information and enhances detecting zones of reflectivity. The result of the sediment physical property and cepstrum analysis indicates that zones of reflectivity are essentially zones of relatively high acoustic impedance, low porosity, and low phi (high mean grain size).  相似文献
