Lakes can be used as model basins to investigate subaqueous slope stability under static and dynamic loading conditions. This study combines geophysical, sedimentological and in situ geotechnical methods with limit equilibrium calculations in order to discuss (i) the geological and sedimentological processes acting on submerged non-deltaic lateral slopes in perialpine, fjord-type Lake Lucerne (Central Switzerland); (ii) their control on physical and geotechnical properties that eventually affect the subaqueous stability conditions and slope failure initiation, and (iii) the quantitative assessment of subaqueous slope stability. Three detailed case studies are presented to describe and quantitatively reconstruct stability conditions of slopes that failed during a well-documented historic earthquake in 1601 A.D. and during a prehistoric Late Holocene earthquake around 2220 cal yr BP (both Mw > 6).
Glacio-lacustrine sedimentation dominated by suspension settling from meltwater plumes and slight overconsolidation from ice-grounding during small readvances of a generally retreating glacier lead to a peculiar glacial-to-postglacial lithologic slope succession that eventually was buried by the Holocene sediment drape. During past earthquake shaking, the slopes that were stable under static loading conditions (factor of safety of 1.5–2) failed along planar sliding surfaces that developed at the lithological boundary between fine-grained, thinly-laminated, slightly underconsolidated cyclic plume deposits with low undrained shear strength values above and overconsolidated, glacially-deformed, glacio-lacustrine deposits with excessive formation pore pressure below. Measured in situ shear strength characteristics and sediment geometries were implemented into limit equilibrium models that allow for quantitative reconstruction of critical ground accelerations of past earthquakes in Central Switzerland. Results reveal seismic peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.08 g and 0.14 g for the historic 1601 A.D. Mw 6.2 earthquake and the prehistoric, 2220 cal yr B.P. earthquake, respectively. Additionally, results reveal that stability conditions change over relative short geological time scales because the postglacial sedimentation rate, which mainly controls the static weight of the slope sediment acting on the critical lithological boundary, turns out to be a key parameter in “charging” slopes susceptible to sliding. 相似文献
Geomagnetic pulsations in the frequency range of Pc1 pearl waves with the dynamic spectra having a very narrow spectrum width
at the beginning of the event and a very broad spectrum width (Δf/f0 ∼ 1) in the later part of the event are analyzed. One of the observed events shown by the dynamic spectrum resembles a goose
with the beak at the beginning of the event and with the wing in the later part of the event. Various interpretations of these
geomagnetic pulsations are presented taking into account nonlinear effects, quasilinear interaction of electromagnetic ion-cyclotron
waves with energetic, anisotropic protons and modulation of plasma parameters in the magnetosphere by Pc3–5 hydromagnetic
waves. The ionospheric effect in the signal formation is determined by the ionospheric Alfvén resonator. It can control the
frequency range of the dynamic spectra, but not the internal structure of the signal. 相似文献
The Baikal is a deep long and narrow basin in East Siberia which follows a huge fault zone adjoining the Siberian Platform. The basin was formed by rapid subsidence of continental crust during the pas 3–4 Ma. It is bounded by normal faults which indicate extension of the crust during the subsidence. According to seismic reflection profiling data, the intensity of extension is not large (3–7%). It is much smaller than the thinning of the crystalline crust under the basin (up to 38%). The thinning and crustal subsidence can be explained by the transformation of gabbro in the lower crust into dense garnet granulites. The latter rocks (with Vp 7.7−7.8 km/sec) are still located under the remnant part of the crust. Rapid transformation took place due to an inflow of catalyzing fluid along the fault zone from the asthenospheric upwelling. This upwelling, which is at a depth of 80–90 km, caused a general uplift of a broad area in the south of East Siberia. 相似文献
The Sorokin Trough (Black Sea) is characterized by diapiric structures formed in a compressional tectonic regime that facilitate fluid migration to the seafloor. We present acoustic data in order to image details of mud volcanoes associated with the diapirs. Three types of mud volcanoes were distinguished: cone-shaped, flat-topped, and collapsed structures. All mud volcanoes, except for the Kazakov mud volcano, are located above shallow mud diapirs and diapiric ridges. Beyond the known near-surface occurrence of gas hydrates, bottom simulating reflectors are not seen on our seismic records, but pronounced lateral amplitude variations and bright spots may indicate the presence of gas hydrates and free gas. 相似文献
The case study of four Pc1 subauroral pulsation events from Finland has been carried out on the basis of the full-wave numerical
method. This method has been applied to simultaneous Scandinavian EISCAT radar measurements of the ionospheric plasma parameters,
and their vertical (altitude) profiles have been utilized. Two alternative plasma profiles with different ion composition
displays have been put to the test. A comparison between both types of the modeled ionospheric Alfvén resonator (IAR) ground
signal frequency response and the frequency range of the Pc1 signal records has been studied. The results of the applied method
can illustrate possible quiescent or disturbance changes in the upper ionosphere above the dense F2 layer. The ionospheric
region up to ∼ 2000 km has been taken into account for this comparative analysis. 相似文献
The developmental history of peatland and dry land vegetation within the Ob-Vasugan watershed of Western Siberia was characterized according to features of the plant communities and climatic changes which were revealed by stratigraphic, spore-pollen and C14 (carbon) data obtained from a vertical peat profile Vodorasdel. Changes in the paleoecological environment over the last 10000 years were divided into five periods. The climate was characterized in the Holocene according to these periods. At the watershed studied, peatland-forming processes started about 9510 years ago resulting in 550 cm of peat accumulation. The rate of peat accumulation within the watershed decreased over time from 1.9–0.3 mm year– 1. 相似文献
Imaging in geological challenging environments has led to new developments, including the idea of generating reflection responses by means of interferometric redatuming at a given target datum in the subsurface, when the target datum lies beneath a complex overburden. One way to perform this redatuming is via conventional model-based wave-equation techniques. But those techniques can be computationally expensive for large-scale seismic problems since the number of wave-equation solves is equal to two times the number of sources involved during seismic data acquisition. Also conventional shot-profile techniques require lots of memory to save full subsurface extended image volumes. Therefore, we can only form subsurface image volumes in either horizontal or vertical directions. To exploit the information hidden in full subsurface extended image volumes, we now present a randomized singular value decomposition-based approach built upon the matrix probing scheme, which takes advantage of the algebraic structure of the extended imaging system. This low-rank representation enables us to overcome both the computational cost associated with the number of wave-equation solutions and memory usage due to explicit storage of full subsurface extended image volumes employed by conventional migration methods. Experimental results on complex geological models demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methodology and allow practical reflection-based extended imaging for large-scale five-dimensional seismic data. 相似文献
