Benthic Metabolism and Standing Stock in the Central and Northern Deep Red Sea

Abstract. Benthic metabolism and standing stocks were investigated in the deep Red Sea between 21^o and 27^oN, Activity was assessed by the determination of respiration rates with a shipboard method and by calculating oxygen consumption from the activity in the electron transport system. We attempted to compare results from different latitudes within the warm Red Sea and with data from cold Atlantic environments. Our investigations were part of an environmental risk assessment to evaluate future mining of metalliferous sediments from the Atlantis II Deep.     

Optimum design of a servo-controlled breathing regulator for underwater divers

This article deals with the analysis, synthesis and performance evaluation of the flow and dynamic characteristics of the new class of servo-controlled breathing regulators for underwater divers.Emphasis on such a class of regulators has been stimulated by their tremendous potential in extending the dive depth and duration because they reduce the diver breathing effort to a great extent. This would eliminate the unnecessary exhaustion of the diver under such extreme diving conditions and accordingly improve his work efficiency underwater.The study aims at developing rational design procedures and guides that would enable the regulator designers to select the optimal design parameters of this class of regulators. Such design guides are based on the analysis of the flow and dynamic characteristics of the servo-controlled regulator as well as the basic principle of the theory of optimum control.The study presents also experimental evaluation techniques of the dynamic characteristics of this class of regulators in order to provide common quantitative means for comparison with the conventional regulator designs.The presented results emphasize the merits and the potential of the servo-controlled regulators as essential tools of supporting the life of divers underwater.     

Interactions of cadmium with the reproductive cycle of Mytilus edulis L.

Sublethal effects of cadmium on reproduction can have detrimental consequences for the long-term survival, even of species with high LC₅₀ values. The sea mussel, Mytilus edulis, is well-known for its use in biomonitoring work due to its relatively low sensitivity towards many toxicants, including cadmium.¹ Because little is known on sublethal effects of this metal in invertebrates,^2–6 we have studied these effects, with emphasis on reproduction, by exposing mussels to 100 ppb cadmium in sea water. This concentration significantly inhibits follicle development in both male and female gonads, but has subsequently a stimulating effect on the spawning frequency. Due to these opposite effects the consequences of cadmium stress for gamete production are expected to be small, as the average number of gametes released by spawning animals was not significantly changed.     

Calculation of ship collision avoidance manoeuvres: A simplified approach

The moment at which in a two-ship encounter a collision avoidance manoeuvre should be initiated in order to achieve a specific distance at the closest point of approach has been calculated. The calculations were based on the kinematics of encounter and simplified equations of motion. Mathematical equations which relate the maneouvring distance, the turning direction and the extent of course change for any desired passing distance and any given turning rate are determined. Knowledge of these quantities is essential for the safe conduct of the ship with automatic, computer-assisted navigation as well as with ordinary, manual navigation if the navigator no longer contents himself with estimates but wishes to know precisely in advance the outcome of any specific manoeuvre he chooses.     

Caught in the act: the 20 December 2001 gravity flow event in Monterey Canyon

A sediment gravity flow descended through the axis of Monterey Canyon on 20 December 2001 at 13:35 Pacific standard time. The timing of this event is documented by a current-meter package which recorded an 11.9-dbar pressure increase in less than 10 min and was found 550 m down-canyon from its deployment site, buried completely within a >70-cm-thick gravity flow deposit. This event is believed to have started in less than 290 m of water because an instrument at this location was also lost at the same time. A 178-cm core collected after the event from the axis of the canyon at 1,297-m water depth contained fresh, greenish, chlorophyll-rich organic material at 32-cm sub-bottom depth, suggesting the event extended to this water depth. The only trigger identified for this mass movement event appears to be moderate sea and surf conditions. Thus, gravity flow events of this magnitude do not require an exceptional triggering event.
