The numerical kernel approach to difference imaging has been implemented and applied to gravitational microlensing events observed by the PLANET collaboration. The effect of an error in the source-star coordinates is explored and a new algorithm is presented for determining the precise coordinates of the microlens in blended events, essential for accurate photometry of difference images. It is shown how the photometric reference flux need not be measured directly from the reference image but can be obtained from measurements of the difference images combined with the knowledge of the statistical flux uncertainties. The improved performance of the new algorithm, relative to isis2 , is demonstrated.  相似文献

A bottom-moored vehicle, employing a 36-kHz acoustic array, is described. Its purpose is to census benthopelagic populations at abyssal depths and detect vertical movement of these animals. It is argued that an acoustic census offers particular advantages over traditional sampling methods, and when used in conjunction with these methods, offers powerful insight into abyssal community dynamics.  相似文献

Many radio pulsars exhibit glitches wherein the star's spin rate increases fractionally by ∼10−10–10−6. Glitches are ascribed to variable coupling between the neutron star crust and its superfluid interior. With the aim of distinguishing among different theoretical explanations for the glitch phenomenon, we study the response of a neutron star to two types of perturbations to the vortex array that exists in the superfluid interior: (1) thermal motion of vortices pinned to inner crust nuclei, initiated by sudden heating of the crust, (e.g., a starquake), and (2) mechanical motion of vortices (e.g., from crust cracking by superfluid stresses). Both mechanisms produce acceptable fits to glitch observations in four pulsars, with the exception of the 1989 glitch in the Crab pulsar, which is best fitted by the thermal excitation model. The two models make different predictions for the generation of internal heat and subsequent enhancement of surface emission. The mechanical glitch model predicts a negligible temperature increase. For a pure and highly conductive crust, the thermal glitch model predicts a surface temperature increase of as much as ∼2 per cent, occurring several weeks after the glitch. If the thermal conductivity of the crust is lowered by a high concentration of impurities, however, the surface temperature increases by ∼10 per cent about a decade after a thermal glitch. A thermal glitch in an impure crust is consistent with the surface emission limits following the 2000 January glitch in the Vela pulsar. Future surface emission measurements coordinated with radio observations will constrain glitch mechanisms and the conductivity of the crust.  相似文献

We describe a progressive program in science education called the Initiative to Develop Education through Astronomy (IDEA). IDEA represents a commitrnent by the Astrophysics Division of NASA Headquarters to pre-collegiate and public learning. The program enlists the full participation of research astronomers in taking advantage of the natural appeal of astronomy and the unique features of space astrophysics missions to generate valuable learning experiences and scientifically accurate and educationally effective products for students, teachers and citizens. One of the premier projects is called Flight Opportunities for Science Teacher EnRichment (FOSTER) — a program to fly teachers aboard the Kuiper Airborne Observatory during actual research missions. IDEA is managed by a visiting scientist with extensive educational background (each of the authors have served in this role), and the program is unique within NASA science divisions for having a full time scientist devoted to education. IDEA recognizes that the rapidly shifting social and political landscape has caused a fundamental change in how science is expected to contribute to society. It is in the enlightened self-interest of all research scientists to respond to the challenge of connecting forefront research to basic educational needs. IDEA is exploring the avenues needed to facilitate these connections, including supplementing research grants for educational purposes.Presented at the 2nd UN/ESA Workshop, held in Bogotá, Colombia, 9–13 November, 1992.  相似文献

Initial 187Os/188Os isotopic compositions for geochronologically and geologically well -constrained 3.8-Ga spinel peridotites from the Itsaq Gneiss Complex of southern West Greenland and chromite separates from 3.46-Ga komatiites from the Pilbara region of Western Australia have been determined to investigate the osmium isotopic evolution of the early terrestrial mantle. The measured compositions of 187Os/188Os(0) = 0.10262 ± 2, from an olivine separate, and 0.10329 ± 3, for a spinel separate from ∼3.8-Ga peridotite G93/42, are the lowest yet reported from any terrestrial sample. The corrections for in situ decay over 3.8 Ga for these low Re/Os phases are minimal and change the isotopic compositions by only 0.5 and 2.2% for the spinel and the olivine, respectively, resulting in 187Os/188Os(3.8 Ga) = 0.1021 ± 0.0002 and 0.1009 ± 0.0002, respectively. These data extend direct measurement of Os isotopic compositions to much earlier periods of Earth history than previously documented and provide the best constraints on the Os isotopic composition of the early Archean terrestrial mantle. Analyses of Pilbara chromites yield 3.46-Ga mantle compositions of 0.1042 ± 0.0002 and 0.1051 ± 0.0002.These new data, combined with published initial Os isotopic compositions from late Archean and early Proterozoic samples, are compatible with the mantle, or at least portions of it, evolving from a solar system initially defined by meteorites to a modern composition of 187Os/188Os(0) = 0.1296 ± 0.0008 as previously suggested from peridotite xenolith data ( Meisel et al., 2001); the associated 187Re/188Os(0) = 0.435 ± 0.005. Thus, chondritic 187Os/188Os compositions were a feature of the upper mantle for at least 3.8 billion years, requiring chondritic Re/Os ratios to have been a characteristic of the very early terrestrial mantle. In contrast, nonchondritic initial compositions of some Archean komatiites demonstrate that Os isotopic heterogeneity is an ancient feature of plume materials, reflecting the development of variable Re/Os mantle sources early in Earth history.The lower average 187Os/188Os = 0.1247 for abyssal peridotites (Snow and Reisberg, 1995) indicate that not all regions of the modern mantle have evolved with the same Re/Os ratio. The relative sizes of the various reservoirs are unknown, although mass balance considerations can provide some general constraints. For example, if the unradiogenic 187Os/188Os modern abyssal peridotite compositions reflect the prevalent upper mantle composition, then the complementary high Re/Os basaltic reservoir must represent 20 to 40% by mass of the upper mantle (taken here as 50% of the entire mantle), depending on the mean storage age. The difficulties associated with efficient long-term storage of such large volumes of subducted basalt suggest that the majority of the upper mantle is not significantly Re-depleted. Rather, abyssal peridotites sample anomalous mantle regions.The existence of 3.8-Ga mantle peridotites with chondritic 187Os/188Os compositions and with Os concentrations similar to the mean abundances measured in modern peridotites places an upper limit on the timing of a late accretionary veneer. These observations require that any highly siderophile element -rich component must have been added to the Earth and transported into and grossly homogenized within the mantle by 3.8 Ga. Either large-scale mixing of impact materials occurred on very short (0-100 myr) timescales or (the interpretation preferred here) the late veneer of highly siderophile elements is unrelated to the lunar terminal cataclysm estimated to have occurred at ∼3.8 to 3.9 Ga.  相似文献

The paper discusses electron intensities observed on two rocket flights over auroral arcs. On both occasions there was an order-of-magnitude increase in the electron phase-space density as the rocket moved northwards across the arc from a southern region of relatively hard precipitation to an adjacent northern region of softer (but still intense) precipitation. These two distinct regions formed northern and southern ‘curtains’ to the arcs. Electrons observed to the south of one of the arcs had the same phase-space density as those in the southern curtain of the arc. It is concluded that the electrons producing the auroral arcs were accelerated at the boundary between two source plasmas in the magnetosphere. The possible identity of the source plasmas is discussed. From the various types of election energy spectra encountered it is suggested that time-varying magnetic fields played an important part in the acceleration of the electrons that produced the auroral arcs.  相似文献

A multisensor piezometer probe has measured pore pressures in fine-grained submarine sediments of the Mississippi Delta over a period of approximately eight months. Data presented here cover the initial 2650 hours of the experiment. Dynamic and ambient pore pressures were recorded. Analogue data collected from the time of probe insertion include decay characteristics, steady-state (ambient) excess pore pressures, and the response of pore pressures to surface wave activity. The probe was installed in 43–44 ft of water near an offshore platform in the East Bay area of the Delta. Sensors were located at 21, 41 and 51 ft below the mudline. Ambient excess pore pressures were determined to be 0.7, 2.8 and 6.6 psi (lb/in2) at the respective depths. The relatively high excess pressures and the measured laboratory wet unit weights of the soil result in a significantly low effective stress. Pressure fluctuations due to tidal and surface wave activity were observed to produce significant pore pressure response in these soils. Preliminary data obtained using high-airentry and corundum stones indicate that considerably more research is necessary in order to fully understand the peculiarities observed in the data and to assess the role of dissolved and free gas on the pore pressures in submarine sediments.  相似文献

The generalized inverse method of Bennett and McIntosh (1982) is used to assess the efficiency of instrument arrays with observe deterministic fields. The arrays considered are combinations of points at which bottom pressures are observed (Cartwright, 1978), plus paths along which averaged barotropic velocities are observed, by the acoustic tomography technique of reciprocal shooting (Munk and Wunsch, 1982a,b). The barotropic M2 tide is used as an example of a field which is being observed by the array, and for which an interpolation or smoothing is required. The treatment of observations of individual inter-annual events would be similar.It is shown that the generalized inverse method for the objective analysis of deterministic fields is formally identical to the Gandin (1965) method for the objective analysis of random fields.Construction of the generalized inverse requires the inversion of an Hermitian positive definite matrix. Array efficiency is characterized by the number of significant eigenvalues of the matrix.The admission of errors in the observations and dynamics necessitates the choice of weights in a variational principle. The choice is made by prior estimation of the relative error variances. It is also necessary to choose locally singular weighting functions for the dynamics, in order to ensure non-singular interpolating or smoothing fields. The dominant array modes are defined and constructed. These are the interpolating fields which make the most stable contribution to the generalized inverse.An example of inversion is carried out using simulated data.  相似文献

Mobile, location‐aware computing technology is widely available. In this article we sketch out a manifesto on mobile computing in geographic education (MoGeo) for consideration and debate within the geographic community. At the core of our argument is the idea that emerging mobile computing technologies will allow teachers to bring the classroom and pedagogic materials into the field, and that the resulting in situ educational experience will enhance learning by contextualizing the complex and abstract concepts that we teach. We provide a set of key principles that can guide the development of field experiences for students using these new technologies.  相似文献

Eclogite of recycled slab origin has often been invoked in the source region of mid-ocean ridge and ocean-island basalts. Melts of this eclogitic material are expected to be enriched in incompatible elements including major elements such as Na and Ti. In order to investigate the controls on trace element chemistry of a melt from such a recycled component we have performed trace element partitioning experiments in the simple systems CMAS (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2), NCMAS (Na2O-CMAS) and Ti-CMAS (TiO2-CMAS) at 3 GPa and 1298-1500°C using analogue eclogitic compositions.We show that sodium has a profound effect on clinopyroxene-melt partition coefficients. NCMAS is characterized by elevated partition coefficients, relative to CMAS for all elements except Li. The increase is more pronounced for more highly charged cations, resulting in negative partitioning anomalies for Li, Sr, Ba and Pb. In contrast to sodium, titanium has very little effect on trace element partitioning for all elements except Nb and Ta, which are retained by the rutile that is saturated in this run.  相似文献
