Response of reef coral communities to sea-level rise: a Holocene model from Mauritius (Western Indian Ocean) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The fringing reef at Pointe-au-Sable (Mauritius, Indian Ocean) was used to examine the effects of Holocene sea-level rise on coral growth. This reef is about 1000 m wide and comprises a forereef slope (30 m maximum depth), a narrow reef crest and a very shallow backreef (1·5 m maximum depth). Four major coral communities were recognized, which developed within relatively narrow depth ranges: a Pachyseris/Oulophyllia community (deeper than 20 m), an Acropora‘tabulate’Faviid community (20–6 m); a robust branching Acropora community (less than 6 m) and a Pavona community (less than 10m). Three high-recovery cores show the Holocene reef sequence is a maximum of 19·3 m thick and comprises four coral biofacies which are similar to counterparts identified in modern communities: robust branching, tabular-branching, robust branching-domal and foliaceous coral facies. A minimum sea-level curve for the past 7500 years was constructed. Using distribution patterns of coral biofacies and radiocarbon dates from corals, reconstruction of reef growth history indicates that both offshore and onshore reef zones were developing coevally, aggrading at rates of 4·3 mm year?1 from 6900 years B.P. The reef caught up with sea-level only after sea-level stabilized. Changes in coral community and reef growth rates were driven principally by increasing water agitation due to the decrease in accommodation space. Sand waves are large bed waves on the seabed, being a few metres high and lying hundreds of metres apart. In some cases, these sand waves occur in navigation channels. If these sand waves reduce the water depth to an unacceptable level and hinder navigation, they need to be dredged. It has been observed in the Bisanseto Channel in Japan that the sand waves tend to regain their shape after dredging. In this paper, we address modelling of this regeneration of sand waves, aiming to predict this process. For this purpose, we combine a very simple, yet effective, amplitude-evolution model based on the Landau equation, with measurements in the Bisanseto Channel. The model parameters are tuned to the measured data using a genetic algorithm, a stochastic optimization routine. The results are good. The tuned model accurately reproduces the measured growth of the sand waves. The differences between the measured weave heights and the model results are smaller than the measurement noise. Furthermore, the resulting parameters are surprisingly consistent, given the large variations in the sediment characteristics, the water depth and the flow field. This approach was tested on its predictive capacity using a synthetic test case. The model was tuned based on constructed predredging data and the amplitude evolution as measured for over 2 years. After tuning, the predictions were accurate for about 10 years. This paper discusses diamonds and their accessory minerals from the Koidu kimberlites, placers on the Bafit River in Sierra Leone, and Chikapa placers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Minerals from the placers are characterized by fine preservation and bear no evidence of long-term transportation. In placers, garnet, ilmenite and zircon have been found, but the specific features of their chemical composition do not coincide with those of minerals from kimberlites. Diamonds from the placers are of a mantle origin, but they have no direct analogs in the known kimberlite and lamproite pipes. 相似文献

Pyroxenite xenoliths are relatively common in an alkali trachybasalt in the Glen Innes area in northeastern New South Wales where they coexist with peridotite xenoliths, probably lherzolitic. The pyroxenites vary widely in modal composition. Several pyroxenite xenoliths are characterised by megacrystals of subcalcic clinopyroxene and enstatite, the former comprising a unique group of high pressure pyroxenes in which exsolution of orthopyroxene has proceeded on a megascopic scale. Garnet is absent from all mineral assemblages. Mineralogical and experimental data suggest that the subcalcic clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene megacrystals equilibrated initially at temperatures and pressures of the order of 1350–1450° C and 10–23 kb respectively. The most common xenoliths, namely diopsideorthopyroxene assemblages in which there is evidence of subsolidus annealing, equilibrated at comparable pressures but a significantly lower temperatures (ca. 1000° C). It is suggested that the pyroxenites and associated peridotite xenoliths are samples of essentially unmodified layered upper mantle. 相似文献

The Taparko gold deposit, located in the eastern branch of the Proterozoic Birimian Bouroum-Yalogo greenstone belt (Burkina
Faso) consists of a network of quartz veins developed in a N 170° trending shear zone (250 m wide, 4 km long) superimposed
on the regional Birimian structural pattern. The quartz vein network is composed of: (a) a dominant array of quartz veins
(type 1), parallel to the shear zone and comprising strongly deformed dark quartz exhibiting foliation, layering, ribbon,
tension gashes, etc.; (b) oblique and subparallel related veins (type 2) of gray to white weakly deformed quartz crosscutting
the dominant quartz veins resulting in breccia structures; and (c) shallow dipping veins (type 3), cross-cutting veins types
1 and 2 and filled by undeformed white buck structure quartz. Cross-cutting relationships and different quartz types in different
veins and within individual veins imply a concomitant filling of the veins during the progressive deformation. Initial sinistral
transcurrent shearing evolved with time to sinistral reverse shearing. Metallic minerals occur only in type 1 and 2 veins
and were deposited in two stages, with native gold being related to second stage sulfides. Gold (and chalcopyrite) precipitated
preferentially upon the surfaces of fractured pyrite grains in low-pressure sites (pressure shadow zones) around and/or within
the sulfide grains (along subsequently annealed fractures). The formation of the South Taparko deposit can be divided into
a succession of events: (a) during the first event, N 170°-directed sinistral transcurrent shearing resulted in a N 20° mylonitic
foliation and fractured rock which allowed H2O-, CO2- and SiO2-rich fluids to circulate and deposit quartz with buck texture; (b) during the second event, type 1 quartz was strongly deformed
and type 2 veins formed with sigmoidal shapes as viewed on a horizontal plane; and (c) during the third event, the sinistral
transcurrent shearing evolved to sinistral reverse shearing and the deformation style evolved correspondingly from ductile
to brittle-ductile. During the last phase of deformation gold nucleated and deposited in low-pressure zones.
