The Brazilian Amazon is a vast territory with an enormous need for mapping and monitoring of renewable and non-renewable resources. Due to the adverse environmental condition (rain, cloud, dense vegetation) and difficult access, topographic information is still poor, and when available needs to be updated or re-mapped. In this paper, the feasibility of using Digital Surface Models (DSMs) extracted from TerraSAR-X Stripmap stereo-pair images for detailed topographic mapping was investigated for a mountainous area in the Carajás Mineral Province, located on the easternmost border of the Brazilian Amazon. The quality of the radargrammetric DSMs was evaluated regarding field altimetric measurements. Precise topographic field information acquired from a Global Positioning System (GPS) was used as Ground Control Points (GCPs) for the modeling of the stereoscopic DSMs and as Independent Check Points (ICPs) for the calculation of elevation accuracies. The analysis was performed following two ways: (1) the use of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and (2) calculations of systematic error (bias) and precision. The test for significant systematic error was based on the Student’s-t distribution and the test of precision was based on the Chi-squared distribution. The investigation has shown that the accuracy of the TerraSAR-X Stripmap DSMs met the requirements for 1:50,000 map (Class A) as requested by the Brazilian Standard for Cartographic Accuracy. Thus, the use of TerraSAR-X Stripmap images can be considered a promising alternative for detailed topographic mapping in similar environments of the Amazon region, where available topographic information is rare or presents low quality. 相似文献

One way to investigate the magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling is through the simultaneous observation of different parameters measured at different locations of the geospace environment and try to determine some relationships among them. The main objective of this work is to examine how the solar energetic particles and the interplanetary medium conditions may affect the space and time configuration of the ring current at low-latitudes and also to get a better understanding on how these particles interfere with the lower ionosphere in the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly region (SAMA). To accomplish this, the cosmic noise absorption (CNA) and the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field data measured from sites located in the SAMA region were compared with the proton and electron fluxes, interplanetary medium conditions (solar wind and the north–south component of the interplanetary magnetic field measured on board satellites), the SYM-H index and magnetometer data from Kakioka (KAK-Japan), located significantly outside the SAMA region. The time series analyzed correspond to the geomagnetic disturbance that occurred on August 25–30, 1998. The analysis was performed by implementing wavelet techniques, with particular attention to singularities detection, which highlights the presence of transient signals. The results are discussed in terms of the first three wavelet decomposition levels of the parameters. The magnitude of wavelet coefficients of the solar wind and proton flux at the two energy ranges analyzed is timely well correlated, indicating that these two signals are energetically linked. The larger wavelet coefficient amplitude of KAK and VSS magnetograms shows time delays that are compatible with an asymmetric configuration of the ring current, considering that at the storm time, VSS was at the dawn sector of the magnetosphere and KAK at the dusk side. The wavelet analysis of CNA signals reveals that the signal may be sensitive to the ionization produced by energetic electrons and protons as well. The time delays observed in wavelet coefficients may give an indication of the different accelerating process to which the particles are submitted when traveling along the magnetic field lines, from higher to lower latitudes, and the likely contribution of these particles to the ionization measured as an absorption of the cosmic noise in the lower ionosphere. 相似文献

Seismic risk evaluation of built-up areas involves analysis of the level of earthquake hazard of the region, building vulnerability
and exposure. Within this approach that defines seismic risk, building vulnerability assessment assumes great importance,
not only because of the obvious physical consequences in the eventual occurrence of a seismic event, but also because it is
the one of the few potential aspects in which engineering research can intervene. In fact, rigorous vulnerability assessment
of existing buildings and the implementation of appropriate retrofitting solutions can help to reduce the levels of physical
damage, loss of life and the economic impact of future seismic events. Vulnerability studies of urban centres should be developed
with the aim of identifying building fragilities and reducing seismic risk. As part of the rehabilitation of the historic
city centre of Coimbra, a complete identification and inspection survey of old masonry buildings has been carried out. The
main purpose of this research is to discuss vulnerability assessment methodologies, particularly those of the first level,
through the proposal and development of a method previously used to determine the level of vulnerability, in the assessment
of physical damage and its relationship with seismic intensity. Also presented and discussed are the strategy and proposed
methodology adopted for the vulnerability assessment, damage and loss scenarios for the city centre of Coimbra, Portugal,

This study discusses site-specific system optimization efforts related to the capability of a coastal video station to monitor
intertidal topography. The system consists of two video cameras connected to a PC, and is operating at the meso-tidal, reflective
Faro Beach (Algarve coast, S. Portugal). Measurements from the period February 4, 2009 to May 30, 2010 are discussed in this
study. Shoreline detection was based on the processing of variance images, considering pixel intensity thresholds for feature
extraction, provided by a specially trained artificial neural network (ANN). The obtained shoreline data return rate was 83%,
with an average horizontal cross-shore root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.06 m. Several empirical parameterizations and ANN
models were tested to estimate the elevations of shoreline contours, using wave and tidal data. Using a manually validated
shoreline set, the lowest RMSE (0.18 m) for the vertical elevation was obtained using an ANN while empirical parameterizations
based on the tidal elevation and wave run-up height resulted in an RMSE of 0.26 m. These errors were reduced to 0.22 m after
applying 3-D data filtering and interpolation of the topographic information generated for each tidal cycle. Average beach-face
slope tan(β) RMSE were around 0.02. Tests for a 5-month period of fully automated operation applying the ANN model resulted in an optimal,
average, vertical elevation RMSE of 0.22 m, obtained using a one tidal cycle time window and a time-varying beach-face slope.
The findings indicate that the use of an ANN in such systems has considerable potential, especially for sites where long-term

A theoretical method is proposed to estimate post‐fracturing fracture size and transmissivity, and as a test of the methodology, data collected from two wells were used for verification. This method can be employed before hydrofracturing in order to obtain estimates of the potential hydraulic benefits of hydraulic fracturing. Five different pumping test analysis methods were used to evaluate the well hydraulic data. The most effective methods were the Papadopulos‐Cooper model (1967), which includes wellbore storage effects, and the Gringarten‐Ramey model (1974), known as the single horizontal fracture model. The hydraulic parameters resulting from fitting these models to the field data revealed that as a result of hydraulic fracturing, the transmissivity increased more than 46 times in one well and increased 285 times in the other well. The model developed by dos Santos (2008) , which considers horizontal radial fracture propagation from the hydraulically fractured well, was used to estimate potential fracture geometry after hydrofracturing. For the two studied wells, their fractures could have propagated to distances of almost 175 m or more and developed maximum apertures of about 2.20 mm and hydraulic apertures close to 0.30 mm. Fracturing at this site appears to have expanded and propagated existing fractures and not created new fractures. Hydraulic apertures calculated from pumping test analyses closely matched the results obtained from the hydraulic fracturing model. As a result of this model, post‐fracturing geometry and resulting post‐fracturing well yield can be estimated before the actual hydrofracturing. 相似文献

Admiralty Bay (Antarctica) hosts three scientific stations (Ferraz, Arctowski and Macchu Picchu), which require the use of fossil fuel as an energy source. Fossil fuels are also considered the main source of pollution in the area, representing important inputs of major pollutants (organic compounds) and trace metals and metalloids of environmental interest. Accordingly, this work presents the results of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in sediment profiles from Admiralty Bay. The sediment results from Ferraz station were slightly higher than the other sampling sites. The highest contents were observed for Cu and Zn (from 44 to 89 mg kg−1). Otherwise, by using enrichment factors and geochronology analysis, the most relevant enrichment was observed for As in the samples collected close to the Ferraz station, indicating that increasing As content may be associated with the activities associated with this site. 相似文献

We investigate the origin of the increasing spectra observed at submillimeter wavelengths detected in the flare on 2 November
2003 starting at 17:17 UT. This flare, classified as an X8.3 and 2B event, was simultaneously detected by RHESSI and the Solar
Submillimeter Telescope (SST) at 212 and 405 GHz. Comparison of the time profiles at various wavelengths shows that the submillimeter
emission resembles that of the high-energy X rays observed by RHESSI whereas the microwaves observed by the Owens Valley Solar
Array (OVSA) resemble that of ∼50 keV X rays. Moreover, the centroid position of the submillimeter radiation is seen to originate
within the same flaring loops of the ultraviolet and X-ray sources. Nevertheless, the submillimeter spectra are distinct from
the usual microwave spectra, appearing to be a distinct spectral component with peak frequency in the THz range. Three possibilities
to explain this increasing radio spectra are discussed: (1) gyrosynchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons, (2) bremsstrahlung
from thermal electrons, and (3) gyrosynchrotron emission from the positrons produced by pion or radioactive decay after nuclear
interactions. The latter possibility is ruled out on the grounds that to explain the submillimeter observations requires 3000
to 2×105 more positrons than what is inferred from X-ray and γ-ray observations. It is possible to model the emission as thermal; however, such sources would produce too much flux in the
ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelengths. Nevertheless we are able to explain both spectral components at microwave and submillimeter
wavelengths by gyrosynchrotron emission from the same population of accelerated electrons that emit hard X rays and γ rays. We find that the same 5×1035 electrons inferred from RHESSI observations are responsible for the compact submillimeter source (0.5 arcsec in radius) in
a region of 4500 G low in the atmosphere, and for the traditional microwave spectral component by a more extended source (50
arcsec) in a 480 G magnetic field located higher up in the loops. The extreme values in magnetic field and source size required
to account for the submillimeter emission can be relaxed if anisotropy and transport of the electrons are taken into account. 相似文献

AbstractThe Ibero-Armorican arc is continuous between Iberia and Armorica; its curvature increased with time due to subduction followed by continental collision; indentation produced left lateral transpression in Iberia and right-lateral transpression in Armorica. It is argued that whereas the antithetic shear is predominant in Iberia, in Armorica a synthetic shear prevailed because the identer rotated anticlockwise between the opposed forelands of the Variscan Fold Belt. The nutrients, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, significantly affect the quality of aquatic environments, especially when present at concentrations above natural levels. In this context, the sedimentary column can act as an environment for storage or accumulation of these nutrients and for the reprocessing of such substances in the water column and aquatic biota. In this context, this study aimed to estimate the concentration of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), inorganic phosphorus (IP) and organic phosphorus (OP) in seven sediment samples that were collected from the Marrecas Stream microbasin (Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil). The relationships among the sediment nutrient concentrations and the levels of organic matter (OM), fine material (silt–clay) and the concentration of the metal species, Al, Fe and Mn, as well as the possible nutrient sources to the stream studied were also evaluated. The data set suggest that the TOC and IP appear to have a direct correlation with the vast riparian vegetation present in areas adjacent to the sampling points and to the physico-chemical properties of the water and sedimentary column. Moreover, the results obtained for TN suggest that its concentration possibly suffers interference from the temperature of the water and its oxygenation, in addition to other biological activities. On the other hand, one cannot rule out human interference, mainly in the levels of OP, possibly due to the inflow of domestic sewage to the stream. 相似文献
