A new three-scale model to describe the coupling between electro-chemistry and hydrodynamics in non-swelling kaolinite clays in steady-state conditions is proposed. The medium is characterized by three separate nano-micro and macroscopic length scales. At the pore (micro)-scale the portrait of the clay consists of micro-pores saturated by an aqueous solution containing four monovalent ions (Na+, H+, Cl, OH) and charged solid particles surrounded by thin electrical double layers. The movement of the ions is governed by the Nernst–Planck equations and the influence of the double layers upon the hydrodynamics is modeled by a slip boundary condition in the tangential velocity governed by the Stokes problem. To capture the correct form of the interface condition we invoke the nanoscopic modeling of the thin electrical double layer based on Poisson–Boltzmann problem with varying surface charge density ruled by the protonation/deprotonation reactions which occur at the surface of the particles. The two-scale nano/micro model is homogenized to the macroscale leading to a precise derivation of effective governing equations. The macroscopic model is discretized by the finite volume method and applied to numerically simulate desalination of a clay sample induced by an external electrical field generated by the placement of electrodes. Numerical results indicate strong pH-dependence of the electrokinetics.  相似文献

A multidisciplinary approach, combining sediment petrographic, palynological and thermochronological techniques, has been used to study the Miocene‐Pliocene sedimentary record of the evolution of the Venezuelan Andes. Samples from the Maracaibo (pro‐wedge) and Barinas (retro‐wedge) foreland basins, proximal to this doubly vergent mountain belt, indicate that fluvial and alluvial‐fan sediments of similar composition were shed to both sides of the Venezuelan Andes. Granitic and gneissic detritus was derived from the core of the mountain belt, whereas sedimentary cover rocks and uplifted foreland basin sediments were recycled from its flanks. Palynological evidence from the Maracaibo and Barinas basins constrains depositional ages of the studied sections from late Miocene to Pliocene. The pollen assemblages from the Maracaibo Basin are indicative of mountain vegetation, implying surface elevations of up to 3500–4000 m in the Venezuelan Andes at this time. Detrital apatite fission‐track (AFT) data were obtained from both stratigraphic sections. In samples from the Maracaibo basin, the youngest AFT grain‐age population has relatively static minimum ages of 5 ± 2 Ma, whereas for the Barinas basin samples AFT minimum ages are 7 ± 2 Ma. With exception of two samples collected from the Eocene Pagüey Formation and from the very base of the Miocene Parángula Formation, no evidence for resetting and track annealing in apatite due to burial heating in the basins was found. This is supported by rock‐eval analyses on organic matter and thermal modelling results. Therefore, for all other samples the detrital AFT ages reflect source area cooling and impose minimum age constraints on sediment deposition. The main phase of surface uplift, topography and relief generation, and erosional exhumation in the Venezuelan Andes occurred during the late Miocene to Pliocene. The Neogene evolution of the Venezuelan Andes bears certain similarities with the evolution of the Eastern Cordillera in Colombia, although they are not driven by exactly the same underlying geodynamic processes. The progressive development of the two mountain belts is seen in the context of collision of the Panama arc with northwestern South America and the closure of the Panama seaway in Miocene times, as well as contemporaneous movement of the Caribbean plate to the east and clock‐wise rotation of the Maracaibo block.  相似文献

The bivalve Pisidium amnicum (Müller 1774) is a common species in several European freshwater ecosystems. However, few Iberian watersheds are colonized by this species, and the River Minho estuary is possibly the Iberian aquatic ecosystem with the larger population. In October 2004–2007, investigations on spatial and temporal variations in P. amnicum abundance and biomass were carried out at 16 sites along the River Minho tidal freshwater wetlands. Mean abundance and biomass per site ranged from 0 to 750 ind m−2 and 0 to 7.42 g AFDW m−2, respectively. A clear decrease in the spatial distribution, abundance, and biomass was observed during the 4-year assessment. Furthermore, a stepwise multiple regression model showed that organic matter and conductivity explained 50.2% of the variation in P. amnicum abundance (R 2 = 0.502, F [2, 15] = 7.569, p = 0.005). Ecological knowledge is essential to the implementation of future conservation plans for P. amnicum, and the results of this study are of paramount importance to identify habitats that should be protected in order to preserve this species and provide scientific reference that may be useful in the development of management and/or restoration plans.  相似文献

Heatwave intensity and frequency are predicted to increase in the coming years, and this will bear adverse consequences to the environmental well-being and the socio-economic fabric in urbanized areas. The hazardous combination of increased heat storage and reduced water retention capacities of the land surface make the urban areas warmer than the surrounding rural areas in what is commonly known as the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The primary motives of this study are to quantify the interaction of this city-scale UHI with synoptic-scale heatwave episodes and to analyze the factors that mediate this interaction. A modified version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is utilized to simulate two heatwave episodes in New York City. The land surface scheme in the default WRF model is modified to better represent the surface to atmosphere exchanges over urban areas. Our results indicate that during the heatwave episodes, the daily-averaged UHI in NYC increased by 1.5 K. Furthermore, most of this amplification occurs in the mid-afternoon period when the temperatures peak. Wind direction and urban-rural contrasts in available energy and moisture availability are found to have significant and systematic effects on the UHI, but wind speed plays a secondary role.  相似文献

GIS software applications and other mapping tools enable users to correlate data from multiple layers and gain insight from the resulting visualizations. However, most of these applications only feature basic, monolithic layer compositing techniques. These techniques do not always support users effectively in their tasks, as we observed during interviews with GIS experts. We introduce MapMosaic, a novel approach based on dynamic visual compositing that enables users to interactively create and manipulate local composites of multiple vector and raster map layers, taking into account the semantics and attribute values of objects and fields in the compositing process. We evaluate MapMosaic ’s interaction model against that of QGIS (a widely used desktop GIS) and MAPublisher (a professional cartography tool) using the ‘Cognitive Dimensions’ framework and through an analytical comparison, showing that MapMosaic ’s model is more flexible and can support users more effectively in their tasks. We also report on feedback obtained from experts, which further confirms the potential of this highly dynamic approach to map layer compositing.  相似文献

Resistivity techniques have been used successfully to identify and delineate geothermal resources in Iceland. The most frequently used techniques include Schlumberger, central loop TEM and head-on profiling. Geothermal systems in Iceland are located both within and outsite the active volcanic regions. Outsite the active volcanic regions the temperature in the upper most kilometer of the geothermal systems is below 150° C whereas the temperature in the geothermal fields within the active volcanic regions exceeds 200° C. The resistivity of the rock in geothermal fields located outside the active volcanic regions ranges from about 10 m to some hundreds of m, and are characterized by considerably lower resistivity than of the surrounding rocks. Most of the geothermal systems within the active volcanic regions, show common resistivity structure with low resistivity of 1–5 m surrounding an inner core of higher resistivity. This increasing resistivity with depth is associated with a change in the conduction mechanism, from interface conduction to electrolyte conduction due to a change in alteration minerals at about 240° C. Examples of resistivity surveys of geothermal fields from both outsite and within the active volcanic regions are discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the development and testing of a new iterative reconstruction algorithm for astronomy. We propose a maximuma posteriori method of image reconstruction in the Bayesian statistical framework for the Poisson noise case. The method uses the entropy with an adjustable sharpness parameter to define the prior probability and the likelihood with data increment parameters to define the conditional probability. The method allows us to obtain reconstructions with neither the problem of the grey reconstructions associated with the pure Bayesian reconstructions nor the problem of image deterioration, typical of the maximum likelihood method. The total inorganic carbon dioxide-oxygen relationship in the ocean has been studied previously using two different approaches, one of which is theoretical and the other is statistical. Discrepancies between the two sets of results have been solved in this work by applying multiple linear regression analysis to express total inorganic carbon dioxide, normalized to constant S‰, as a function of potential temperature and total alkalinity and oxygen normalized to constant S ‰. Results of the regression are in agreement with the assumption that total alkalinity changes in the open ocean are only due to S ‰ changes and calcium carbonate dissolution or precipitation; and with Redfield's model for the prediction of the total inorganic carbon dioxide-oxygen ratio for the biochemical oxidation.  相似文献
