K-Ar radiometric datings are presented for volcanic rocks from the Coastal Range of Taiwan and from Lanhsu and Lütao islands. The samples involved are basalts, andesites and dacites which show the main petrological and geochemical characteristics of island arc magmas. The K-Ar data show that volcanic activity occurred from Early Miocene to Early Pliocene times in the Coastal Range and in Lanhsu Island, and during Pliocene times (ca. 1.3–4.3 Ma) in Lütao Island. The geological significance of Early and Middle Miocene ages is discussed with respect to hydrothermal/metasomatic alterations which have affected most of the samples. A significant increase in incompatible elements (e.g., K and Sr) is shown to have occurred during Pliocene to Recent times, and is exemplified by the compositions of the Lanhsu, and Lütao volcanic rocks. The origin of these chemical variations is related to the magmatic effects of crustal thickening linked to the transition from subduction to collision regimes.  相似文献

Field analyses of compressional faulting and folding in the Foothills of western Taiwan enable us to reconstruct paleostress trajectories over a large area and to establish the relative chronology of tectonic events. Two main compressional events have contributed to the present structure of the fold-thrust belt. Stratigraphic data show that these events are Plio-Pliocene in age. Older normal faulting indicates NNW-SSE extension across the Chinesse passive continental margin during the Neogene. The two main compressional events of the Taiwan collision correspond to similar fan-shaped distributions of maximum compressive stress trajectories, with a counterclockwise shift of 30°–50° between the two events. Using the relationship between recent stress trajectories and the direction of recent plate motion as a guide, we reconstruct the direction of plate convergence for the older event. We suspect that the relative motion Philippine Sea plate-Eurasia has rotated counterclockwise of at least 35°–45° in Taiwan during collision. This conclusion is in agreement with independent plate tectonic reconstructions. Several problems provide objectives to further tectonic and paleomagnetic studies, including the duration and diachronism of compressional events as well as possible clockwise rotation of northernmost Taiwan.  相似文献

Normal coordinate calculations, producing synthetic infrared and Raman spectra, were carried out on melilites, pyroxenes, silica polymorphs and feldspars. Atomic motions are complex in the high-frequency Raman modes of melilites and aluminous pyroxenes. The symmetric T-Onb stretching vibrations of Si and Al tetrahedra with different numbers of bridging oxygens are separate from each other, but may combine individually with oscillation of bridging oxygens between Si and Al tetrahedra. The latter type of vibration tends to dominate as Al/Si increases. The frequencies of these vibrational components and the degree of such intermixing depend on T-O force constants, which vary greatly depending on local bonding configurations; individual bands in the high-frequency Raman cannot in general be assigned to single structural entities or fixed combinations thereof. Calculations confirm that in some Al-Si glasses such as jadeite and spodumene, i.e. those in which all Al can be tetrahedral without non-bridging oxygens, Al-O-Al linkages or linkage of more than two tetrahedra by a single oxygen, aluminum is predominantly in tetrahedral coordination. Other Al-Si glasses which are richer in aluminum or which have non-bridging oxygens may contain Al tetrahedral triclusters, non-tetrahedral Al, or both. On the basis of distinctive 450–750 cm?1 infrared bands, both silica and feldspar glasses resemble tridymite and related stuffed derivatives, not other crystalline silica polymorphs or feldspars. Either these glasses have a structure like that of tridymite on a local scale, or the disorder of the glasses causes drastic modification to the vibrations in question.  相似文献

Normal coordinate calculations have been carried out on partially polymerized simple silicate crystals, including Li and Na di- and metasilicates, Li and Gd pyrosilicates, thortveitite and rankinite. In the antisymmetric Si-O stretching modes which are active at 800–1200 cm?1 in infrared spectra, Si-Obr vibrations occur at higher frequencies than Si-Onb vibrations if the bonds have equivalent strengths. However, this relationship is usually reversed when bridging oxygens are overbonded and non-bridging oxygens are underbonded in terms of Pauling bond strengths, a situation which is generally more common in crystals. An observed bimodality of the high-frequency envelope in infrared spectra of glasses in the alkali oxide-silica systems may be somewhat fortuitous, with the high frequency component (ca. 1100 cm?1) representing underbonded non-bridging oxygens and saturated bridging oxygens, and the lower-frequency component (ca. 1000 cm?1) mainly oversaturated bridging oxygens. Significant differences between crystals and glasses in the number and location of the main high-frequency infrared peaks suggest that there are short-range bonding rearrangements in the glasses, and that crystallite models are not applicable. Mid-frequency (600–800 cm?1) infrared modes in silicates more polymerized than the pyrosilicate (Si2O7) appear to be mostly antisymmetric modes in which Si rattles against bridging oxygens, rather than symmetric stretching modes.  相似文献

The Kinabalu batholith is a late Neogene granitoid in northwestern Sabah (East Malaysia) apparently marking the locus at which subducted South China Basin lithosphere interacted with roots of the northern Sabah collision suture. The exposed batholith comprises a relatively small core of biotite quartz monzodiorite (BQM) grading out to dominant hornblende quartz monzonite (HQM). Both lithologies contain mafic igneous and metasedimentary inclusions and are cut by late-stage aplite dikes. Major element data indicate the BQM (K2O/Na2O ratios ranging 0.72–1.03) represents a low-K type while HQM (K2O/Na2O ratios ranging 1.35–5.58) is a distinct high-K type. Magmaphile element distributions support this distinction, HQM showing higher K, Rb, LREE and lower Ta and Nb contents than BQM, indicating the more extensive interaction of HQM with sial. Least-squares mass balance models suggest that HQM evolved through the combined effects of fractional crystallization and crustal assimilation while BQM was dominated by fractional crystallization. However, similar plagioclase zoning patterns in both lithologies suggest they are comagmatic rather than generated by melting of separate sources. It is concluded that low-K type melts, formed by subduction-induced remelting of underplated lower crust, underwent high pressure sialic contamination with development of high-K character. These provided access to later-formed low-K melts which were less contaminated and consolidated to form the pluton core. The unusual zonation from inner low-K to outer high-K type compositions may indicate that the cessation of subduction prevented upward migration of the melting anomaly and thermal maturation of the pluton.  相似文献

Basalt petrologists disagree as to whether the commonly used projection, forsterite-diopside-silica, in the system CMAS (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2), can adequately resolve differences in basaltic glass compositions for purposes of petrogenetic modelling. Here, we suggest than an analogous plot, the aluminium-factor diagram (ALFE) of Nesbitt and Cramer (1981), has greater diagnostic value than Fo-Di-Sil. A plot of molar (Al2O2-CaO-Na2O-K2O)/(FeO + MgO) vs FeO/(FeO + MgO), it produces more coherent patterns both for experimental basalt glasses, and for natural lavas. It is, like Fo-Di-Sil, a projection through plagioclase, but has the advantage that it monitors changes in Fe/(Fe + Mg) in melts and associated crystalline phases, and is particularly useful in assessing the timing of clinopyroxene crystallization in a suite of lavas. The diagram owes its greater resolving power to the fact that the computation of its coordinates is less sensitive to analytical uncertainty than for Fo-Di-Sil. In the latter diagram, normative quartz is calculated as a residual and thus manifests the uncertainties in all the major elements.  相似文献

Various methods are described for the analysis of Au and the Pt-group elements (PGE) using different geochemical media commonly collected by the exploration geochemist. The methods described utilize primarily the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analytical technique (INAA) in use at a commercial INAA laboratory.Rocks and soils are routinely analyzed by using a Pb fire-assay preconcentration on a 20-g sample and then analyzing the resultant Ag dore bead by INAA to a detection limit of 1 ppb. Growing rapidly in popularity is the analysis of a 30-g aliquot of sample for 34 elements including Au, solely by INAA. The elements included provide a wealth of information of a geological nature.Due to the very inhomogeneous nature of Au occurring in heavy-mineral concentrates it is imperative to analyze the whole concentrate. The only method which can provide a multielement analysis and still retain the sample intact is INAA.Biogeochemistry using either humus or vegetation as the sample media is rapidly becoming widely used. INAA provides a very sensitive means of determining Au and 34 other elements rapidly and at relatively low cost.These and other methods using the INAA technique for Au and the Pt-group will be described.  相似文献

Low temperature adiabatic calorimetry and high temperature differential scanning calorimetry have been used to measure the heat-capacity of ilmenite (FeTiO3) from 5 to 1000 K. These measurements yield S2980 = 108.9 J/(mol · K). Calculations from published experimental data on the reduction of ilmenite yield Δ2980(I1) = ?1153.9 kJ/(mol · K). These new data, combined with available experimental and thermodynamic data for other phases, have been used to calculate phase equilibria in the system Fe-Ti-O. Calculations for the subsystem Ti-O show that extremely low values of ?O2 are necessary to stabilize TiO, the mineral hongquiite reported from the Tao district in China. This mineral may not be TiO, and it should be re-examined for substitution of other elements such as N or C. Consideration of solid-solution models for phases in the system Fe-Ti-O allows derivation of a new thermometer/oxybarometer for assemblages of ferropseudobrookite-pseudobrookitess and hematite-ilmenitess. Preliminary application of this new thermometer/oxybarometer to lunar and terrestrial lavas gives reasonable estimates of oxygen fugacities, but generally yields subsolidus temperatures, suggesting re-equilibration of one or more phases during cooling.  相似文献

Geomorphic, stratigraphic, palynologic and 14C evidence indicates that the West Coast Range, Tasmania, was glaciated at least three times during the late Cenozoic. The last or Margaret Glaciation commenced after 30,000 yr B.P., culminated about 19,000 yr B.P., and ended by 10,000 yr B.P. During this period a small ice cap, ca. 250 m thick, and cirque and valley glaciers covered 108 km2. The glacial deposits show little chemical weathering or erosional dissection. The snow line ranged from 690 to 1000 m with an average of 830 m for the ice cap. Mean temperature was 6.5°C below the present temperature. During the preceding Henty Glaciation a 300- to 400-m-thick ice cap and outlet glaciers exceeded 1000 km2. The glacial deposits are beyond 14C assay. They are more weathered chemically and more dissected than Margaret age deposits, and the degree suggests a pre-last interglaciation age (> 130,000 yr B.P.). The snow line of the ice cap lay at 740 m, and annual temperature was reduced by 7°C. Ice of the earliest Linda Glaciation slightly exceeded that of the Henty Glaciation but had a similar distribution. The glacial deposits are intensely weathered, have reversed magnetization, and overlie a paleosol containing pollen of Tertiary type. An early Pleistocene or Tertiary age is indicated.  相似文献
