On the basis of an increased set of experimental data, covering the miscibility gap between orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene from 2 to 60 kb with a temperature range of 850–1,500° C, we present a new version of a regular solution model. The model with two independent regular solutions for opx and cpx is capable of reproducing experimental data in the system CaO-MgO-SiO2 over a large range of temperatures and pressures. It is qualitatively in agreement with observed stability regions for an Fe-free low-Ca pyroxene, termed pigeonite. The model is constrained by and thus consistent with calorimetric measurements on pyroxenes. The simple form of equations provides a good starting point for the development of more reliable thermometers based on the miscibility gap.Abbrevations Used in the Text cpx

Atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic has undergone significant fluctuations during the Holocene. To better constrain these changes and their impacts on the Fennoscandian subarctic, we investigated molecular and inorganic proxies as well as plant wax D/H isotopes (δDC28) in a Holocene sedimentary record from Lake Torneträsk (Sweden). These data indicate a thermal maximum c. 8100 to 6300 cal. a BP with reduced soil organic matter input, followed by a long‐term cooling trend with increasing soil erosion. δD data suggest a stable atmospheric circulation with predominance of westerly flow and North Atlantic moisture sourcing during the Early and Middle Holocene. A substantial depletion in δD followed by increased flood frequency starting at c. 5300 cal. a BP and intensifying c. 1500 cal. a BP suggests a reorganization of the atmospheric circulation from zonal towards meridional flow with predominantly Arctic Ocean and Baltic Sea moisture sourcing. 相似文献

We report the discovery of the oldest evidence for human presence in the southeastern Baltic Sea region. This paper presents an overview of the Riadino‐5 archaeological site in the lower course of the Šešupė River (Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia) and direct infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) ages for the culture‐bearing sediments from the site, which place the time of occupation well within the range of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 (ca 57–26 ka). Luminescence ages were determined using the multiple‐aliquot additive‐dose technique, applied to sand‐sized potassium feldspar. Four of the six IRSL samples from the site come from the cultural deposits, while two are from the surrounding sediments. The luminescence age of the deposits implies that human occupation of the southeastern Baltic Sea region occurred at least between 50 ka and 44 ka during the first half of MIS 3 and the Middle‐Upper Paleolithic. 相似文献

Undifferentiated meteorites (chondrites) have the same relative abundances of refractory lithophile elements (Ca, Al, Ti, Sc, REE, etc.), despite variable absolute concentrations. The reasonable assumption of chondritic ratios among refractory elements in the bulk Earth is used to constrain the chemical composition of the upper mantle in the following way: Correlations of the compatible refractory elements Ca, Al, Ti, Sc and Yb with MgO are worldwide very similar in suites of spinel-lherzolite xenoliths from basaltic rocks. Such suites represent upper mantle material depleted to differing degrees by extraction of partial melts. From these refractory elements vs. MgO correlations, ratios of pairs of refractory elements were calculated at various MgO contents. Chondritic and ratios were only obtained for MgO contents below 36%. A chrondritic ratio requires an MgO content above 35%. We therefore accept 35.5% as the most reasonable MgO content of undepleted upper mantle. This MgO content is slightly below the spinel-lherzolite with the lowest measured MgO content (36.22%). The corresponding Al2O3 content of 4.75% is higher than in previous estimates of upper mantle composition. The concentrations of other elements were obtained from similar correlations at a MgO content of 35.5%. The resulting present upper mantle composition is enriched in refractory elements by a factor of 1.49 relative to Si and Cl and by a factor of 1.12 for Mg relative to Si and Cl. These enrichments are in the same range as those for the Vigarano type carbonaceous chondrites. The Mg/Mg + Fe ratio of 89 is slightly lower than previous estimates.The ratio in spinel lherzolite suites is, however, uniformly higher worldwide than the chondritic ratio by about 15%. Orogenic peridotites as well as komatiites appear to have similar non-chondritic ratios. It is therefore suggested that this non-chondritic ratio is a characteristic of the upper mantle, possibly since the Archean. A minor fractionation of about 4% of garnet in an early, global melting event (deep magma ocean?) is presented as the most likely cause for the high . In this case the addition of 4% of such a garnet component to the undepleted present upper mantle would be required to obtain the composition of the primordial upper mantle. The of this primordial mantle would be 15% higher than that of the undepleted present upper mantle, resulting in an enrichment of refractory elements of 1.70 ( relative to Cl) for the primordial upper mantle. 相似文献

In the Hessian region of Germany numerous deposits of tuffs are known from which natural building stones were extracted. Many buildings show examples of the use of this material in the past. In contrast to their attractive appearance and ease of extraction from quarries, tuffs are liable to destruction by weathering. Most common damages are disintegration, crumbling, cracking, scaling and flaking. In this paper, the causes of damage of selected varieties have been analysed using petrographical and petrophysical methods. The measured values are disadvantageous in comparison to other natural building stones. Large amounts of swellable clay minerals, mostly forming the cementing material, cause scaling due to repeated humidification. High porosity including negative pore structures and high adsorption effects results in structural damages while freezing. Consequently, most varieties of the described tuffs possess a limited usage as an outdoor building material. 相似文献
