A high-resolution ocean model forced with an annually repeating atmosphere is used to examine variability of the Kuroshio, the western boundary current in the North Pacific Ocean. A large meander (LM) in the path of the Kuroshio south of Japan develops and disappears in a highly bimodal fashion on decadal timescales. The modeled meander is comparable in timing and spatial extent to an observed feature in the region. Various characteristics of the LM are examined, including relative vorticity, transport, and velocity shear. The many similarities between the model and observations indicate that the meander results from intrinsic oceanic variability, which is represented in this climatologically forced model. Each LM is preceded by a smaller “trigger” meander that originates at the south end of Kyushu, moves up the coast, and develops into the LM. However, there are also many meanders very similar in character to the trigger meander that do not develop into LMs. Formation of an LM only occurs when a deep anticyclone associated with the trigger meander forms near Koshu Seamount. Furthermore, the major axis of that deep anticyclone must be oriented away from the coast, rather than alongshore. In the specific case of interaction of a trigger meander with a deep anticyclone with major axis oriented away from the coastline, LM formation occurs.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the faint M star population seen as foreground contaminants in deep extragalactic surveys. We use space-based data to separate such stars from high-redshift galaxies in a publicly available data set, and consider the photometric properties of the resulting sample in the optical and infrared. The inferred distances place these stars well beyond the scaleheight of the thick disc. We find strong similarities between this faint sample (reaching   i 'AB= 25  ) and the brighter disc M dwarf population studied by other authors. The optical–infrared properties of the bulk of our sources spanning 6000 Å-4.5 μm are consistent with those 5–10 mag brighter. We also present deep spectroscopy of faint M dwarf stars reaching continuum limits of i 'AB≈ 26, and measure absorption-line strengths in the CaH2 and TiO5 bands. Both photometrically and spectroscopically, our sources are consistent with metallicities as low as a tenth solar: metal-rich compared with halo stars at similar heliocentric distances. We comment on the possible massive astrophysical compact halo object (MACHO) identification of M stars at faint magnitudes.  相似文献

The Australia Telescope 20-GHz (AT20G) Survey is a blind survey of the whole southern sky at 20 GHz (with follow-up observations at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz) carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array from 2004 to 2007.
The Bright Source Sample (BSS) is a complete flux-limited subsample of the AT20G Survey catalogue comprising 320 extragalactic     ) radio sources south of  δ=−15°  with      Jy. Of these, 218 have near simultaneous observations at 8 and 5 GHz.
In this paper we present an analysis of radio spectral properties in total intensity and polarization, size, optical identifications and redshift distribution of the BSS sources. The analysis of the spectral behaviour shows spectral curvature in most sources with spectral steepening that increases at higher frequencies (the median spectral index α, assuming   S ∝να  , decreases from  α8.64.8= 0.11  between 4.8 and 8.6 GHz to  α208.6=−0.16  between 8.6 and 20 GHz), even if the sample is dominated by flat spectra sources (85 per cent of the sample has  α208.6 > −0.5)  . The almost simultaneous spectra in total intensity and polarization allowed us a comparison of the polarized and total intensity spectra: polarized fraction slightly increases with frequency, but the shapes of the spectra have little correlation. Optical identifications provided an estimation of redshift for 186 sources with a median value of 1.20 and 0.13, respectively, for QSO and galaxies.  相似文献

A large population of z > 5 Lyman-break galaxies has been identified in recent years. However, the high-redshift galaxies selected by different surveys are subject to a variety of selection effects – some overt, others more subtle. We present an analysis of sample completeness and contamination issues in high-redshift surveys, focusing on surveys at z ≈ 5 and using a spectroscopically confirmed low-redshift sample from the DEEP2 survey in order to characterize contaminant galaxies. We find that most surveys underestimate their contamination from highly clustered galaxies at z ≈ 1 and stars. We consider the consequences of this for both the rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity function and the clustering signal from z ≈ 5 galaxies. We also find that sources with moderate strength Lyman α emission lines can be omitted from dropout surveys due to their blue colours, again effecting the derived luminosity functions. We discuss the points of comparison between different samples, and the applicability of survey-specific results to the population at z > 5 in general.  相似文献

This study investigates and quantifies the influence of physical heterogeneity in granular porous media, represented by materials with different hydraulic conductivity, on the migration of nitrate, used as an amendment to enhance bioremediation, under an electric field. Laboratory experiments were conducted in a bench‐scale test cell under a low applied direct current using glass bead and clay mixes and synthetic groundwater to represent ideal conditions. The experiments included bromide tracer tests in homogeneous settings to deduce controls on electrokinetic transport of inorganic solutes in the different materials, and comparison of nitrate migration under homogeneous and heterogeneous scenarios. The results indicate that physical heterogeneity of subsurface materials, represented by a contrast between a higher‐hydraulic conductivity and lower‐hydraulic conductivity material normal to the direction of the applied electric field exerts the following controls on nitrate migration: (1) a spatial change in nitrate migration rate due to changes in effective ionic mobility and subsequent accumulation of nitrate at the interface between these materials; and (2) a spatial change in the voltage gradient distribution across the hydraulic conductivity contrast, due to the inverse relationship with effective ionic mobility. These factors will contribute to higher mass transport of nitrate through low hydraulic conductivity zones in heterogeneous porous media, relative to homogeneous host materials. Overall electrokinetic migration of amendments such as nitrate can be increased in heterogeneous granular porous media to enhance the in situ bioremediation of organic contaminants present in low hydraulic conductivity zones.  相似文献

Private wells are the source of drinking water for approximately 15% of households in the United States, but these wells are not regulated or monitored by government agencies. The well waters can contain arsenic, a known carcinogen that occurs in groundwater throughout the nation at concentrations that can exceed the Maximum Contaminant Level defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (10 ppb). In order to reduce arsenic exposure, homeowners can either rely on bottled water for drinking or install in-house water treatment systems for arsenic removal. Here, we document the arsenic levels associated with these options. We examined 24 different major bottled water brands and found that all have arsenic levels <1.5 parts per billion (ppb), and more than half have levels below our measurement detection limit of 0.005 ppb. For in-house treatment systems, we examined the performance of arsenic removal by point-of-use reverse osmosis filtration, and by whole-house and point-of-use filters containing granulated ferric oxide. Our results show that long-term (2 years) filtration with granulated ferric oxide reduced arsenic in well water from an initial concentration of 4 to 9 ppb down to <0.005 ppb, validating this technology as an effective form of arsenic remediation for private homes.  相似文献

The chemical characteristics of bulk (sterile-filtered) and high molecular-weight dissolved organic matter (HMW DOM) were analyzed for freshwater (St. Louis River, Minnesota to Lake Superior) and saline (Elizabeth River, Virginia to Chesapeake Bay) river-to-receiving basin transects. Dissolved organic carbon concentrations and UV–Visible spectroscopy of bulk DOM demonstrated a reduction in organic carbon, colored DOM and aromatic compounds downstream in both transects. The proportion of DOM recoverable via ultrafiltration as HMW material also decreased downstream in both transects, although there was an offset in recoveries between the transects that may be explained by the effects of ionic strength and/or differences in ultrafiltration technique. The analysis of HMW DOM by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy illustrated similar trends between transects, with a general shift from aromatic/carboxylic compounds nearshore to aliphatic/carbohydrate materials offshore. The parallel changes observed along saline and freshwater transects imply that similar processes play significant roles in the down-gradient alteration of DOM and that ionic strength or pH changes cause second-order effects.  相似文献

In their article, “New light on a dark subject: On the use of fluorescence data to deduce redox states of natural organic matter,” Macalady and Walton-Day (2009) subjected natural organic matter (NOM) samples to oxidation, reduction, and photochemical transformation. Fluorescence spectra were obtained on samples, which were diluted “to bring maximum uvvisible absorbance values below 1.0.” The spectra were fit to the Cory and McKnight (2005) parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) model, and consistent variation in the redox state of quinone-like moieties was not detected. Based on these results they concluded that fitting fluorescence spectra to the Cory and McKnight (2005) PARAFAC model to obtain information about the redox state of quinone-like moieties in NOM is problematic. Recognizing that collection and correction of fluorescence spectra requires consideration of many factors, we investigated the potential for inner-filter effects to obscure the ability of fluorescence spectroscopy to quantify the redox state of quinone-like moieties. We collected fluorescence spectra on Pony Lake and Suwannee River fulvic acid standards that were diluted to cover a range of absorbance wavelengths, and fit these spectra to the Cory and McKnight (2005) PARAFAC model. Our results suggest that, in order for the commonly used inner-filter correction to effectively remove inner-filter effects, samples should be diluted such that the absorbance at 254 nm is less than 0.3 prior to the collection of fluorescence spectra. This finding indicates that inner-filter effects may have obscured changes in the redox signature of fluorescence spectra of the highly absorbing samples studied by Macalady and Walton-Day (2009).  相似文献
