The study of the stochasticity of the asteroid belt requires the analysis of a large number of orbits. We detect the dynamical
character of a set of 5 400 asteroids using the Fast Lyapunov Indicator, a method of analysis closely related to the computation
of the Lyapunov Characteristic Exponents, but cheaper in computational time. For both regular and chaotic orbits we try to
associate the motion to the underlying resonances network. For it we consider different methods of classification of rational
numbers proposed by number theory, and we choose the one which seems to be strictly related to the dynamical behaviour of
a system.

Spatio-temporal variability of pollutants in the environment is a complex phenomenon that requires a combined approach for its analysis. Whereas data on measured levels of contaminants in various environmental compartments is essential, it is not always possible to monitor at the necessary frequency and with the adequate spatial sampling distribution to capture this variability. Therefore a modelling approach able to complement experimental data and close the gaps in the monitoring programs is useful for assessing the contaminant dynamics occurring at different time scales. In this work a 1D water column fate model has been developed and tested for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). The model has been coupled with a simple ecological model that includes a bioaccumulation module. Afterwards, the model has been used to study the temporal variability of contaminant concentrations as well as the fluxes between compartments. The results evidence the complex coupling between spatio-temporal scales and its influence on environmental concentration levels. 相似文献

The importance of the historical information in flood analysis has previously been underlined. In this context, we present an integral methodology aimed at the establishment of return periods of different flood units on the unique basis of historical data. Specifically, the reconstruction of the flood chronology extended back to 1900, complemented with a new (historical data-based) event intensity index, and the return period estimation will be addressed. Since some of the historical data are collected from interviews and other sources with different degrees of precision and reliability, two kinds of uncertainty will be considered; namely the statistical variability and the imprecision. We propose an innovative methodology involving intervals (ranges), fuzzy sets, and weights to formalize and average the criteria that determine the importance of the different events. On the other hand, to take into account the statistical variability, we propose to estimate the return period in a flexible and efficient way by considering bootstrap confidence intervals. The methodology is particularly useful at ungauged, or partially gauged, flood inundation areas, where the existing flow gauge stations do not give the flood series at the point of interest. A case study developed in Spain is discussed. The results are supported by two recent events, which have been mapped at 1:5000 scale. 相似文献

Yardangs are streamlined ridges that form in arid environments on Earth and Mars through wind-driven abrasion of consolidated substrates. Currently, there is limited consensus on the mechanisms that initiate and establish patterns of yardangs on the landscape. In this work, we examine the spatial organization of yardangs in the Campo de Piedra Pómez ignimbrite deposit of north-western Argentina and identify evidence of antecedent controls on yardang patterns and formation. We mapped 14,826 yardangs in the region using a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and satellite imagery. We classified yardangs as points using a two-stage decision rule based on morphology and spectral characteristics. Point pattern analysis shows that yardangs in the study area are not randomly distributed and commonly exhibit directional anisotropy in point pattern. The anisotropic pattern manifests as bands of closely-spaced yardangs oriented transverse to the dominant northwesterly wind direction. We hypothesize that banding is controlled by pre-existing antecedent topography in the bedrock, such as fumaroles or ridges associated with pyroclastic flow deposits. We present evidence from other locations on Earth and Mars to illustrate that the transverse banding is a common pattern in yardang landscapes. 相似文献

This paper examines storm-induced morphological and hydrodynamic changes after a submerged and a detached breakwater were constructed at La Barceloneta beach (Barcelona, NW Mediterranean) in 2006–2007. The shoreline configurations before and after beach nourishment and the construction of the protective structures were compared using a video dataset comprising 29 storm events spanning the pre- (2001 to 2005, n?=?17) and the post-breakwater situation (2006 to 2011, n?=?12), and hydrodynamic modelling based on the SMC coastal modelling system. As a result of the protection works, La Barceloneta was subdivided into two beaches separated by an artificial salient. The analysis of shoreline response to storms has been improved by using the shoreline hyperbolic tangent fit to represent the beach planform. Comparing the pre- and post-breakwater situations on the basis of these shoreline fits facilitated the identification of beach rotation processes because interference by smaller-scale morphological features was eliminated (e.g. the formation, changes in shape or migration of mega-cusps). In the current post-breakwater situation, there is evidence for a change in the behaviour of the north-eastern beach triggered by the submerged breakwater built in 2007. Furthermore, a counter-clockwise beach rotation has occurred at the north-eastern beach, whereas the south-western beach has experienced a clockwise beach rotation. This morphodynamic behaviour is caused by a new, complex wave-induced circulation system comprising two dominant alongshore currents flowing in opposite directions. In contrast to the pre-breakwater situation, the alongshore component of the radiation stress does not accomplish beach rotation in the post-breakwater situation. 相似文献

We describe the coordinate transformations that can be used to convert the velocity components measured by a set of sonic
anemometers with time-dependent tilt fluctuations into a single, time-independent coordinate system. By applying the planar
fit method (PFM) to each anemometer dataset, it is possible, for planar flows, to locate the flow plane at each measurement
point and compare its orientation with the topography. Installation on a ship is also considered. An application of this method
to intercomparison data has led to the detection of an instrument error due to a misalignment between the assembly of the
sonic transducers and the anemometer pedestal. If this error occurs, pedestal levelling does not guarantee that measurements
are unbiased. A correction method is proposed and the results of two experiments are shown. Flow planarity at different levels
and flow distortion caused by the mast are highlighted. The influence of the error on the evaluation of the Reynolds stresses
using PFM or the double rotation method and the triple rotation method is discussed and the tilt corrected stresses calculated

The results of a 8 year survey of wet and dry depositions collected in Bologna (Northern Italy) are presented and discussed:
monthly fluxes of the main ions (hydrogen, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen, sulphate
and chloride) have been registered and statistically discussed. The trend of hydrogen ion, whose largest correlation in the
global deposition was found with sulphate, is clearly downwards, with peaks mainly in winter months. By means of a data factor
analysis, three main sources to explain the variability of the deposition chemistry were recognized: an anthropogenic contribution
(particularly represented by NO3
−, SO4
2−, H+), the sea spray (Na+, Cl− and, to a lesser extent, K+ and Mg2+) and a terrigenous fraction, particularly characterized by higher Ca2+ concentration; however, some concentration peaks of this ion have been found in association with some episodes of Saharan

We study the evolution of the longitudinal asymmetry in solar activity through the wave packet technique applied to the period
domain of 25 – 31 days (centered at the 27-day solar rotation period) for the sunspot number and geomagnetic aa index. We observe the occurrence of alternating smaller and larger amplitudes of the 11-year cycle, resulting in a 22-year
periodicity in the 27-day signal. The evolution of the 22-year cycle shows a change of regime around the year 1912 when the
22-year period disappears from the sunspot number series and appears in the aa index. Other changes, such as a change in the correlation between solar and geomagnetic activity, took place at the same
time. Splitting the 27-day frequency domain of aa index shows an 11-year cycle for higher frequencies and a pure22-year cycle for lower frequencies, which we attribute to
higher latitude coronal holes. This evidence is particularly clear after 1940, which is another benchmark in the evolution
of the aa index. We discuss briefly the mechanisms that could account for the observed features of the 22-year cycle evolution. 相似文献

Dzif?áková previously developed a method for calculating the influence of nonthermal electron-velocity distributions on the intensities of spectral lines (Solar Phys. 234, 243, 2006; In: Lacoste, H., Ouwehand, L. (eds.) SOHO-17. 10 Years of SOHO and Beyond, SP-617, ESA, Noordwijk, 89, 2006). Here, we study this method in detail for the test case: Fe?xv. It involves fitting a parametric form to the electron-excitation data in the CHIANTI atomic database. We assess the reliability of these fits by comparing them with the source atomic data, both Upsilons (Maxwellian-averaged collision strengths) and the original collision strengths. An accuracy for the method of better than 15% is deduced for all transitions, with a much higher accuracy than this for the strong electric-dipole transitions. A κ-distribution, which has an increased number of electrons in the high-energy tail of the distribution, is considered as an example. The shape of the κ-distribution affects the electron-excitation rate and thus the relative intensities of the spectral lines. Since the shape of the electron distribution function also influences the ionization balance of Fe, both effects change the final intensities of the lines. Synthetic spectra for Fe?xv and Fe?xvi in the wavelength range 50?–?80 Å are presented for a κ-distribution and compared with solar observations. 相似文献

We have revisited the problem of the transition from ordered to chaotic motion for increasing number of degrees of freedom in nonlinear symplectic maps. Following the pioneer work of Froeschlé (Phys. Rev. A 18, 277–281, 1978) we investigate such systems as a function of the number of couplings among the equations of motion, i.e. as a function of a parameter called connectance since the seminal paper of Gardner and Ashby (Nature 228, 784, 1970) about linear systems. We compare two different models showing that in the nonlinear case the connectance has to be intended as the fraction of explicit dynamical couplings among degrees of freedom, rather than the fraction of non-zero elements in a given matrix. The chaoticity increases then with the connectance until the system is fully coupled. 相似文献
