We investigate the stress–strain behaviour and failure of a cohesive granular material both by experiments and numerical simulations. The material is an assembly of aluminium rods glued together by means of an epoxy resin. The behaviour of cohesive bonds (force–displacement relationship, failure conditions) is characterized by performing simple loading tests (tension/compression, shear…) on a couple of rods. Then, this local behaviour is introduced in a numerical code based on a discrete element method in order to perform numerical compression tests on large samples. The validation of this approach was the main goal of the present investigation that is essentially achieved by a direct comparison between the numerical results and similar experimental tests. As a basic application, we derive the macroscopic cohesion and friction characteristics of random cohesive materials by systematic numerical simulations in a biaxial geometry. In this paper, Bam post-seismic deformations during 7 years after earthquake have been extracted using persistent scatterer interferometry technique. The results illustrate that the maximum amount of uplift and subsidence displacements along line of sight direction during 2004–2010 after the earthquake are 4.5 ± 0.5 and ? 4.3 ± 0.5 cm, respectively. The results of displacement field indicate that an exponential function with the relaxation time of 2.5 years can be fitted to the corresponding process. The estimated inter-seismic slip value by the inversion of SAR line-of-sight data after relaxation time is 6.35 ± 0.05 mm. Mechanical time dependent processes in the post-seismic relaxation typically rely on models of poroelastic rebound, afterslip fault dilatancy recovery and viscoelastic relaxation to explain surface displacements field. The time series are inverted for the afterslip distribution on an extension of the co-seismic rupture. The estimated post-seismic slip value is 20.45 ± 0.38 cm. Most of the post-seismic displacement field can be explained in terms of fault slip. The results of post-seismic motion modeling indicate that the poroelastic rebound can be detected using the line-of-sight data and the effect of viscoelastic relaxation in post-seismic displacement is negligible.  相似文献

Geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics of marl deposits in Jordan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Marls and marly limestone deposits cover most of Northern Jordan, where Amman City and its suburbs are located. These deposits serve as foundations for most buildings and roads as well as fill material for structural back filling, especially road bases and sub-bases. The present study aims at investigating the geotechnical characteristics and mineral composition of the marl units of these deposits through field investigations and laboratory testing. Using X-ray diffraction technique along with chemical analysis, representative samples of marl horizons were tested for mineral composition, and for a set of index and geotechnical properties including: specific gravity, grain size, Atterberg limits, Proctor compaction and shear strength properties. The test results show a positive linear relationship as expected between the clay content and both liquid and plastic limits. The tests results also show an inverse linear relationship between the clay content and the maximum dry density in both standard and modified compaction. This is attributed to the adsorption of water by the clay minerals. The relationship is more prominent in the case of modified compaction test. The results also indicate a similar relationship for the angle of internal friction. No clear correlation between cohesion and clay content was apparent.  相似文献

Appropriate evaluation of shear modulus and damping characteristics of soils subjected to dynamic loading is key to accurate seismic response analysis and soil modeling programs. Dynamic centrifuge experiments were conducted at C-CORE (Memorial University of Newfoundland) centrifuge center to investigate the dynamic properties and seismic response of soft clay and dry loose sand strata. Soft clay with shear strength of about 30 kPa and well graded silica sand at about 35% relative density were employed in a rigid container to simulate local site effects. Several earthquake-like shaking events were applied to the model to evaluate variation of shear modulus and damping ratio with shear strain amplitude and confining pressure, and to assess their effects on site response. The estimated modulus reduction and damping ratio were compared to the predictions of empirical formulae and resonant column tests for both soft clay and loose sand. The evaluated shear modulus and damping ratio were found to be dependent on confining pressure in both soil types. Modulus variation in both soils agreed well with the empirical curves and resonant column test results. However, the sand modulus values were slightly higher than the empirical relations and resonant column tests. This discrepancy is attributed to higher stress and densification of sand during large amplitude shaking applied to the model. The damping ratio at shear strains lower than 0.5% was in reasonable agreement with the empirical curves and the resonant column tests in both clay and sand models, but was generally higher at shear strain larger than 0.5%.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the removal mechanism of U(VI) from groundwater by magnetite as the main product of anoxic steel corrosion. For this purpose, a systematic sequence of batch experiments was conducted to focus the active role of magnetite in the reduction of U under different conditions. Results indicated that under anoxic conditions U(VI) was sorbed at the magnetite surface, whereas under reducing conditions at different H2(g) pressures, U was present in tetravalent form as amorphous UO2.  相似文献

Rare metal mineralization of Sn, Nb-Ta and W is encountered in the Gebel Dihmit area (GDA), southeastern Aswan, Egypt. The mineralization is related to muscovite granites and their pegmatite derivatives. The pegmatites are divided into three types according to their main mineral assemblages: K-feldspar-muscovite-tourmaline, K-feldspar-albite-muscovite and albite-K-feldspar-lepidolite veins. Petrogenetic studies indicate that Sn and Nb-Ta mineralization extends from the late-magmatic stage to the pegmatite and hydrothermal stages of the (GDA) suite. The albite-K-feldspar-lepidolite granite is composed dominantly of albite, lepidolote, and quartz, with topaz, K-feldspar and amblygonite. The accessory minerals are zircon, monazite, pollucite, columbite-tantalite, microlite and Ta-rich cassiterite. Phenocrysts of quartz, topaz and K-feldspar contain abundant inclusions of albite laths and occasional lepidolite crystals along growth zones (snowball texture), indicating simultaneous crystallization from a subsolvus, residual magma. The origin of the pegmatites is attributed to extreme differentiation by fractional crystallization of a granitic magma. The economic potential for rare metals was evaluated in the geochemical discrimination diagrams. Accordingly, some of the pegmatites are not only highly differentiated in terms of alkalis, but also the promising targets for small-scale Ta and, to a less extent, Sn. The pegmatites also provide the first example of Fe-Mn and Nb-Ta fractionation in successive generations of granites to cassiterite-bearing pegmatites, which perfectly ex- hibit similar fractionation trends established for primary columbite-tantalite in the corresponding categories of pegmatites. Uranium and Th of magmatic origin are indicated by the presence of thorite and allanite, whereas evidence of hydrothermal mineralization is the alteration of rock- foring minerals such as feldspar and the formation of secondary minerals such as uranophane..  相似文献

Soil complexity and its multivariable nature restrict the precision of soil maps that are essential tools for soil sustainable management. Most methods developed for reducing impurities of soil map units focus on soil external properties. Taking into account the soil internal properties like geochemical weathering indices could increase the map unit’s purity. However, the compatibility of these indices with Soil Taxonomic Classes has not been studied yet. This study has been performed in a hilly region with different soil types, vegetation and diverse topographic attributes to illustrate the spatial variability of soil weathering indices and their compatibility with Soil Taxonomic Classes. The grid sampling is at 100 m interval. Physico-chemical and total elemental analyses were performed on 184 and 56 soil samples respectively. Eight topographic attributes and 14 common soil development indices were determined. Principal components analysis (PCA) was done to identify the most important components. The results indicated that Morphological Index (MI) was the best index to show the degree of soil development in the studied region. Spatial distribution of Soil Taxonomic Classes showed relatively good compatibility with the first principal component (PC1), Vogt (V) and morphological indices. The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer (NSSA) is the main groundwater resource of the El-Bahariya Oasis, which is located in the middle of the Western Desert of Egypt. This aquifer is composed mainly of continental clastic sediments of sandstone with shale and clay intercalations of saturated thickness ranging between 100 and 1500 m. Vulnerability assessment to delineate areas that are more susceptible to contamination from anthropogenic sources has become an important element for sustainable resources management and land use planning. Accordingly, this research aims to estimate the vulnerability of NSSA by applying the DRASTIC model as well as utilising sensitivity analyses to evaluate the relative importance of the model parameters for aquifer vulnerability in the study area. The main objective is to demonstrate the combined use of the DRASTIC and the GIS techniques as an effective method for groundwater pollution risk assessment, and mapping the areas that are prone to deterioration of groundwater quality and quantity. Based on DRASTIC index (DI) values, a groundwater vulnerability map was produced using the GIS. The aquifer analysis in the study area highlighted the following key points: the northeastern and western parts of the NSSA were dominated by ‘High’ vulnerability classes while the northwestern and southeastern parts were characterised by ‘Medium’ vulnerability classes. The elevated central part of the study area displayed ‘Low’ aquifer vulnerability. The vulnerability map shows a relatively greater risk imposed on the northeastern part of the NSSA due to the larger pollution potential of intensive vegetable cultivation. Depth-to-water, topography and hydraulic conductivity parameters were found to be more effective in assessing aquifer vulnerability.  相似文献

In the procedures to minimize diachronic landslides, data on their temporal evolution and destructive capacities are necessary. For that purpose, remote-detection techniques proved to be highly useful for quantifying the ongoing change in the relief, as well as in comparisons between digital terrain models achieved by Light Detection and Ranging. The methodology presented in this paper includes the supervised merging and comparison of sequential scans, acquired within nearly annual intervals from an irregular terrain, which improves the quality of the results highlighting ground changes. This approach is based on the processing of digital terrain models from point clouds acquired by Terrestrial Laser Scanning to quantify and interpret the landslide displacements. In parallel, it is supported by Global Navigation Satellite Systems, the use of artificial targets and a refined data processing to minimize the uncertainty and improve the precision of the results. This is applied to a large translational slide affecting phyllite rocks in a IV-V degree of weathering settled on the southern slope of Sierra Nevada (south-eastern Spain). During the monitoring period (2008–2010), the slide remained inactive until 2009, followed by a reactivation with displacements in the range ?1.80 to 1.20 m along the period 2009–2010, where negative values are downwards from the reference model (2009). The accumulated relative standard deviation between data sets was on the order of 7.5 cm, whereas the threshold to determine a terrain displacement (also avoiding changes due to erosion-accumulation processes) was of 10 cm. When applying this methodology to Airborne Laser Scanning datasets for the years 2008 and 2010, covering zones hidden to the line of sight of the terrestrial technique, a reactivation with similar deformation pattern was found useful to validate the findings, although the detail of changes and quantitative results did not match exactly due to the different accuracy and resolution of both techniques. The reactivation of the slide coincided with a period of intense rains, pointing to this as the triggering factor, with a precipitation threshold of roughly 1000 mm in a period of 4 months, only reached on one occasion throughout in the historical record.  相似文献
