Despite its importance within environmental management strategies, little concern is shown to sulfide oxidation and/or hardpan
formation at neutral pH where dry condition prevails. Two gold mine tailings in Egypt, El Sid and Barramiya, were studied
for their geochemical/mineralogical properties, and climate influence on hardpan formation. The tailings are characterised
by homogeneous silt-sized sediments (>42%), have high carbonate, predominantly as calcite for El Sid and dolomite-ankerite
for Barramiya, and low-sulfide contents, chiefly as pyrite, galena and sphalerite for El Sid, and arsenopyrite–pyrite for
Barramiya. El Sid is characterised by high average concentrations of Pb (2,758 mg/Kg) and Zn (2,314 mg/Kg), its lower part
dominated by mafics, overlaid by granitoids. Barramiya has higher As (average 2,836 mg/Kg) content and represents a mixture
of mica-schists/mafics-ultramafics. During field investigations, no hardpans were identified, only bassanite and gypsum were
found at the surface of El Sid tailings, forming thin layers and desiccation crack fillings. Column experiments showed a thin
crust consisting of gypsum, halite and sodium sulfate formed at the top of the column of El Sid tailings after 2 weeks, this
was not recognized in the column from Barramiya. The homogenous thickened tailings deposition in both areas did not favour
hardpan formation, since the critical amounts of reacting sulfides were never achieved in individual lamina, due to missing
mineral/grain size fractionation. The high-temperature/low-water availability, characteristic for desert climate regions did
not allow significant sulfides oxidation. Therefore, both tailings will suffer from continuous erosion and spreading out of
contaminants to the environment for a prolonged period of time by sporadic flash floods. 相似文献

The radial flow rate of a cement grout in a rock fracture is obtained from Bingham’s relation and the fact that the power expended by the injection mechanism is the energy dissipated by viscous effects. The energy balance reveals that the advance ratio is of fundamental importance in the grouting process and is inherently related to the rest and advance phases of a cement grout. This allows giving a precise definition of the zero flow path that divides the energy diagram into two distinct domains for advancing and non-advancing grout. The advance ratio and the zero flow path are used to explore the grouting of one or more fractures, analyze the GIN model in the context of the SL dispute, draw a terminal sequence considering the energy interval alternative, and reformulate the refusal criterion of the North American grouting method. The estimation of finite strain in rocks is fundamental to a meaningful understanding of deformational processes and products on all scales from microscopic fabric development to regional structural analyses. The Rf/φ and Fry methods on feldspar porphyroclasts and mafic grains from 5 granite, 1 metavolcanic, 3 metasedimentary and 1 granodiorite samples were used in Wadi El Falek region. Finite-strain data shows that a high to moderate range of deformation of the granitic to metavolcano-sedimentary samples and axial ratios in the XZ section range from 1.60 to 4.10 for the Rf/φ method and from 2.80 to 4.90 for the Fry method. Furthermore, the short axes are subvertical associated with a subhorizontal foliation. We conclude that finite strain in the deformed granite rocks is of the same order of magnitude as that from metavolcano-sedimentary rocks. Furthermore, contacts formed during intrusion of plutons with some faults in the Wadi El Falek area under brittle to semi-ductile deformation conditions. In this case, finite strain accumulated during superimposed deformation on the already assembled nappe structure. The spatial extent of tephra deposition and environmental impacts from the 1912 Novarupta eruption 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The eruption of Novarupta within the Katmai Volcanic Cluster, south-west Alaska, in June 1912 was the most voluminous eruption of the twentieth century but the distal distribution of tephra deposition is inadequately quantified. We present new syntheses of published tephrostratigraphic studies and a large quantity of previously un-investigated historical records. For the first time, we apply a geostatistical technique, indicator kriging, to integrate and interpolate such data. Our results show evidence for tephra deposition across much of Alaska, Yukon, the northern Pacific, western British Columbia and northwestern Washington. The most distal tephra deposition was observed around 2,500?km downwind from the volcano. Associated with tephra deposition are many accounts of acid deposition and consequent impacts on vegetation and human health. Kriging offers several advantages as a means to integrate and present such data. Future eruptions of a scale similar to the 1912 event have the potential to cause widespread disruption. Historical records of tephra deposition extend far beyond the limit of deposition constrained by tephrostratigraphic records. The distal portion of tephra fallout deposits is rarely adequately mapped by tephrostratigraphy alone; contemporaneous reports of fallout can provide important constraints on the extent of impacts following large explosive eruptions. 相似文献

The dispersion and transport of single inertial particles through an oscillatory turbulent aquatic environment are examined numerically by a Lagrangian particle tracking model using a series of idealised test cases. The turbulent mixing is incorporated into the Lagrangian model by the means of a stochastic scheme in which the inhomogeneous turbulent quantities are governed by a one-dimensional k- ε turbulence closure scheme. This vertical mixing model is further modified to include the effects of surface gravity waves including Coriolis-Stokes forcing, wave breaking, and Langmuir circulations. To simplify the complex interactions between the deterministic and the stochastic phases of flow, we assume a time-invariant turbulent flow field and exclude the hydrodynamic biases due to the effects of ambient mean current. The numerical results show that the inertial particles acquire perturbed oscillations traced out as time-varying sinking/rising orbits in the vicinity of the sea surface under linear and cnoidal waves and acquire a non-looping single arc superimposed with the high-frequency fluctuations beneath the nonlinear solitary waves. Furthermore, we briefly summarise some recipes through the course of this paper on the implementation of the stochastic particle tracking models to realistically describe the drift and suspension of inertial particles throughout the water column. 相似文献

An azimuthal resistivity survey was conducted at the transition zone between the desert area and the cultivated land near
Lake Qaroun, Egypt. This area has been affected by an east-west trending fault system as indicated from the surface geology.
Apparent resistivity values were plotted along azimuth on a polar diagram. Resistivity anomalies, for most of the AB/2 values
with long axes strike in a direction parallel to the contact between the desert and cultivated lands, indicate the presence
of electrical macro-anisotropy, mainly due to the faulting effect, at this area. Vertical electrical soundings (VES) and transient
electromagnetic (TEM) measurements were conducted at eight stations along a line that crosses the boundary between the desert
and cultivated land. Joint inversion of VES-TEM data was successfully used for identification of the subsurface lithostratigraphic
succession and demonstrated the effect of the fault zone on the investigated subsurface medium. Apparent anisotropy coefficients
at all current electrode spacings were calculated, plotted against AB/2 values and compared with the geoelectrical cross section.
The effect of the fault zone was detected at AB/2 spacings equal to 100 m and extended downward and is largely related to
the depth of the fault, as indicated in the constructed cross section. 相似文献
