The sea level rise has its own-bearing on the coastal recession and hydro-environmental degradation of the River Nile Delta.
Attempts are made here to use remote sensing to detect the coastal recession in some selected parts and delineating the chemistry
of groundwater aquifers and surface water, which lie along south-mid-northern and coastal zone of the Nile Delta. Eight water
samples from groundwater monitoring wells and 13 water samples from surface water were collected and analyzed for various
hydrochemical parameters. The groundwater samples are classified into five hydrochemical facies on Hill-Piper trilinear diagram
based on the dominance of different cations and anions: facies 1: Ca–Mg–Na–HCO3–Cl–SO4 type I; facies 2: Na–Cl–HCO3 type II; facies 3: Na–Ca–Mg–Cl type III, facies 4: Ca–Na–Mg–Cl–HCO3 type IV and facies 5: Na–Mg–Cl type V. The hydrochemical facies showed that the majority of samples were enriched in sodium,
bicarbonate and chloride types and, which reflected that the sea water and tidal channel play a major role in controlling
the groundwater chemical composition in the Quaternary shallow aquifers, with a severe degradation going north of Nile Delta.
Also, the relationship between the dissolved chloride (Cl, mmol/l), as a variable, and other major ion combinations (in mmol/l)
were considered as another criterion for chemical classification system. The low and medium chloride groundwater occurs in
southern and mid Nile Delta (Classes A and B), whereas the high and very high chloride (classes D and C) almost covers the
northern parts of the Nile Delta indicating the severe effect of sea water intrusion. Other facets of hydro-environmental
degradation are reflected through monitoring the soil degradation process within the last two decades in the northern part
of Nile Delta. Land degradation was assessed by adopting new approach through the integration of GLASOD/FAO approach and Remote
Sensing/GIS techniques. The main types of human induced soil degradation observed in the studied area are salinity, alkalinity
(sodicity), compaction and water logging. On the other hand, water erosion because of sea rise is assessed. Multi-dates satellite
data from Landsat TM and ETM+ images dated 1983 and 2003 were used to detect the changes of shoreline during the last two
decades. The obtained results showed that, the eroded areas were determined as 568.20 acre; meanwhile the accreted areas were

Assessment of persistent organochlorine pollutants in sediments from Lake Manzala, Egypt 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in surface and core sediment samples collected from Manzala Lake, the largest of the Egyptian coastal lakes. Total concentrations of OCPs and ∑7 PCBs (ICES) in sediments ranged from 0.63 to 31.31 ng/g and 0.26 to 31.27 ng/g, respectively. Geographical distribution indicates that levels of contaminants were significantly higher in areas which are mainly influenced by municipal discharge, indicating significant sources of these compounds in urbanised areas. The composition of DDT and its metabolites suggest old input of DDT. The levels of contaminants in Manzala Lake were similar or lower than those observed in comparable areas worldwide. The profiles of ∑OCPs and ∑PCBs in a core from a site heavily impacted by sewage discharge have highest concentrations in the surface core section indicating recent inputs. Assessment of ecotoxicological risk indicated that sediments in two sites were likely to pose potential biological adverse impact. 相似文献

This paper deals with the mineralogy of the continental shelf sediments of Abu-Quir Bay, N Coast of Egypt. The three dimentional distributions (normal to the shore line, in the breaker and offshore zones and along profiles E-W0 of different material individuals for twelve profiles were discussed. The patternal distribution of the recorded minerals along the bay was controlled by selective transport of the sediments by the E-W littoral current. A general trend for the decrease of the heaviest minerals from the source area (Rosetta Mouth) was observed. The opaques, garnet, zircon and epidote are concentrated in the breaker zone sediments, while the other (pyroxens and mica) are concentrated in the offshore zone sediments. Considerable amounts of opaques, amphiboles, monazite, garnet, staurolite and tourmaline were concentrated near Maadia Outlet, this is most probably attributed to the subsurface old sediments of Canopic Branch. Quaternary alkaline basalts of Middle Atlas, are weathered into spheroidal volumes organized into weathering cover. In the profile studied, the study of transformations from a fresh core basalt to the most weathered rinds, has been analysed using BESI images (backscattred electron image analysis). A part from the microscopic analysis of each weatherted basalt, proportions of primary minerals, clays and pore space has been quantified in different stages of weathering. Indeed, in fresh core basalt, weathering is characterized by a first dissolution of the glass, followed by feldspar transformations in twinning plans, cleavages and in micropores inherited from the magmatic and cristallographic history of the rock.
In most basaltic weathered rinds, pore spaces given by the dissolution of the glass, were filled by a mixture of clays and iron products. In these samples, feldspars are completely dissolved giving important porosity occupied by small quantity of halloysite and kaolinite. The olivine and pyroxene transformations are accompanied by weak pore space formation. At the bottom of the soil, this porosity decreases in response to filling by later secondary products which come from the upper part of the soil by weathering solutions. 相似文献

Sustainable development in El Arish area of North Sinai, Egypt, is retarded by serious environmental problems, where the land-use and land cover of the region is changing over present time. The impact of human activities in the study area is accompanied by the destruction and over-exploitation of the environment. This study applies multivariate statistics (factor and cluster analyses) and GIS techniques to identify both anthropogenic and natural processes affecting the groundwater quality in the Quaternary sands aquifer. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts on groundwater resources, the potential pollution sources, and to identify the main anthropogenic inputs of both nutrients and trace metal. Since the depth to the water table is shallow especially in the northern part (<4?m), and the aquifer was exposed on the ground surface, it has poor buffering capacity and the pollution risk is very high. Groundwater chemistry in this coastal region has complex contaminant sources, where intensive farming activities and untreated wastes put stress on groundwater quality. Several areal distribution maps were constructed for correlating water quality with possible contributing factors such as location, land-use, and aquifer depth. These maps identified both anthropogenic and natural processes affecting groundwater quality of the studied aquifer. Cluster analysis was used to classify water chemistry and determine the hydrochemical groups, Q-mode dendrogram is interpreted and there are three main clusters. Factor analyses identify the potential contamination sources affecting groundwater hydrochemistry such as: nitrate, sulfate, phosphate and potassium fertilizers, pesticides, sewage pond wastes, and salinization due to circulation of dissolved salts in the irrigation water itself. 相似文献

In this paper, a pan-sharpening method, using non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) and the theory of compressive sensing (CS), is proposed. The NSCT is used for sparse image representation to perform a multiscale and directional decomposition of source images in order to express their detail and express the sparsity of their high frequency. The CS is used to merge the multispectral (MS) and panchromatic (pan) images from partial random measurements. Two different fusion rules are then applied. The final pan-sharpened image is obtained by inverse NSCT. Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed method, compared with pan sharpening based on standard NSCT, in terms of visual quality and objective assessment. Finite‐element models of contaminant transport through composite landfill liners require highly refined meshes around the interface between the geomembrane and the clay layer, especially if leakage through holes in the geomembrane is considered. In addition, no general formulation for transport through leaking geomembranes can be found in the literature. The paper develops a general approach to time‐dependent contaminant migration through composite liners with intact or leaking geomembranes. Equations are derived for various combinations of system conditions including Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in the waste, constant mass of contaminants in the waste, steady state or transient transport in the geomembrane, and steady state or transient seepage velocities in the mineral liner. The effect of the geomembrane on transport in the soil is converted into an equivalent boundary condition applicable at the top of the clay layer. Hence, only the media underlying the top geomembrane are explicitly represented in the numerical model, yielding a computationally efficient algorithm. The new formulation is validated in conjunction with finite‐layer, finite‐element and boundary‐element methods, by comparing its predictions to those of more conventional approaches which represent the geomembrane explicitly. Abstract— We performed in situ morphological and isotopic studies of graphite in the primitive chondrites Khohar (L3), Mezö‐Madaras (L3), Inman (L3), Grady (H3), Acfer 182 (CH3), Acfer 207 (CH3), Acfer 214 (CH3), and St. Marks (EH5). Various graphite morphologies were identified, including book, veins, fibrous, fine‐grained, spherulitic, and granular graphite, and cliftonite. SIMS measurements of H, C, N, and O isotopic compositions of the graphites revealed large variations in the isotopic ratios of these four elements. The δ15N and δ13C values show significant variations among the different graphite types without displaying any strict correlation between the isotopic composition and morphology. In the Khohar vein graphites, large 15N excesses are found, with δ15Nmax ~+955‰, confirming previous results. Excesses in 15N are also detected in fine‐grained graphites in chondrites of the CH clan, Acfer 182, Acfer 207, and Acfer 214, with δ15N ranging up to +440‰. The 15N excesses are attributed to ion‐molecule reactions at low temperatures in the interstellar molecular cloud (IMC) from which the solar system formed, though the largest excesses seem to be incompatible with the results of some recent calculation. Significant variations in the carbon isotopic ratios are detected between graphite from different chondrite groups, with a tendency for a systematic increase in δ13C from ordinary to enstatite to carbonaceous chondrites. These variations are interpreted as being due to small‐ and large‐scale carbon isotopic variations in the solar nebula. 相似文献

A procedure for classifying daily summer temperature extremes in northeastern Spain into homogenous regions has been presented and evaluated. This procedure employed daily temperature series from a dense network of 128 weather stations spanning the period from 1960 to 2006. Characteristics of temperature extremes included temperature frequency (e.g., warm days), intensity (e.g., warmest day), and duration (e.g., maximum length of hot spell). Following the results of the principal components analysis and Ward's method of clustering, the study area was divided into four homogenous sub-regions in terms of both the geographic and climatic meanings: the Mediterranean region, the mainland and the Cantabrian region, the moderately elevated areas westward and southward, and the mountainous region. Based on an internal cluster validation measure (Silhouette width), the quality of clustering was evaluated and ensured. The temporal evolution of the long-term (1960–2006) temperature extremes clearly showed a different behavior amongst these sub-regions. The Mediterranean and the highly elevated regions revealed the strongest signals in both daytime and nighttime extremes. For mainland areas, considerable differences in the behavior of the daytime and nighttime temperature extremes were evident. The influence of atmospheric circulation on spatial and temporal variability of temperature extremes was also explored. The variability of summer temperature extremes in NE Spain appears to be mainly driven by the Scandinavian (SCA), the Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO), and the East Atlantic (EA) patterns, with a tendency toward increasing during the positive (negative) phases of the EA (WeMO and SCA) circulation modes. In such a region with complex geography and climate, regionalization of summer temperature extremes can be advantageous for extracting finer-scale information, which may prove useful for the vulnerability assessments and the development of local adaptation strategies in areas such as health, ecosystems and agriculture. 相似文献

Calcite and quartz veins in the gabbroic and dunite rocks of the Semial ophiolite (UAE) were selected for fluid inclusion analysis. The inclusions contain both aqueous low-salinity and hydrocarbon-dominated fluids. Mi-crothermometry data indicate that the aqueous fluids contain 0.22 to 1.45 equivalent wt% NaCl and occasionally contain traces of hydrocarbons. Homogenization to liquid occurred between 91 and 152℃. Modeling based on these fluid inclusion observations indicates that the trapping conditions of the studied rocks were subjected to temperatures of 162 and 172℃, occasional pressures of 610-710 Pa and the sequence percolation of aqueous and hydrocarbon fluids. 相似文献
