The importance of antecedent topography in dictating Holocene facies patterns has been generally recognized. There is, however, disagreement as to origin or lithology of the antecedent topography, particularly with respect to the siliciclastic or carbonate nature of the underlying topography and structural patterns. To help resolve these problems, published and unpublished information have been compiled to produce a structural fabric map of onshore and offshore Belize that includes a new geologic map of the country. The map, along with illustrated seismic lines, demonstrates the occurrence of a number of NNE-trending transpressional faults in which landward directed thrusting is consistently displayed along with tectonic inversion. Offshore wells in conjunction with the seismic lines document the inversion as post-Eocene, suggesting a similar age for transpressional fault movement. Presumably, the landward-directed thrusting reflects the opposing force of eastward-directed subduction along the western margin of Central America relative to the westward seafloor spreading of the Caribbean Cayman Ridge. The Belize faults show little current seismicity, but, nevertheless, the resulting structures have affected Quaternary carbonate deposition as evidenced on an illustrated seismic line by both seaward and landward (bi-directional) progradation of the reef margin from an underlying structural high. The structural influence on the development of Holocene antecedent topography is further suggested by the occurrence of a Bouguer gravity plateau in the same shelf area that marks the occurrence of the Belize lagoon rhomboid shelf atolls. The youngest documented lithology of 12 illustrated offshore exploration wells is Miocene carbonate. In some wells, the carbonate is interpreted as extending into the Pliocene and Holocene although no age diagnostic criteria are in evidence. In other wells, siliciclastics of unknown age and thickness are identified as overlying Neogene carbonates. The regional distribution and age of onshore limestones suggests that unroofing of the Cretaceous carbonate cap of the Maya Mountains siliciclastic sediment source did not occur until late in Neogene time, perhaps no earlier than late Pliocene. Consequently, the Maya Mountains could not have been a major offshore source of siliciclastics until the Quaternary. Information on the lithology of the immediately underlying pre-Holocene is provided by limited penetration core data and shallow resolution seismic lines. These show that antecedent Pleistocene limestones beneath the Holocene reefs were deposited around 130,000 b.p. (isotope stage 5e). The thickness of the overlying Holocene, shelf margin, reef-capped carbonates increases along depositional strike from a few meters in the north to more than 25 m in the south. In contrast, piston cores and seismic data from the southern shelf lagoon collectively document the occurrence of antecedent siliciclastic topography. The southward dip of both carbonate and siliciclastic antecedent surfaces is presumably a reflection of increasing southerly subsidence. Increasing antecedent erosional relief in the same direction reflects the pronounced southerly increase in paleo-rainfall that presumably paralleled that of present-day rainfall.  相似文献

Electroacoustic method was used to measure the zeta potentials of mineral oxides and calcium carbonate in artificial sea water (pH 8), and the following values were obtained: synthetic hematite: 0.87 mV; goethite: 1.01 mV; fumed silica: -3.56 mV; quartz: -1.38 mV; calcium carbonate: 1.91 mV. The absolute values of the zeta potentials obtained in the present study are substantially lower than the zeta potentials in seawater reported by other authors. Our results indicate that the effect of electrostatic repulsion in the interactions between the particles of these materials in seawater is negligible.  相似文献

The coordination environment of Fe(II) has been examined in seven anhydrous ferrosilicate glasses at 298 K and 1 bar using 57Fe Mössbauer, Fe K-edge X-ray near edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), UV-Vis-NIR, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. Glasses of the following compositions were synthesized from oxide melts (abbreviation and nonbridging oxygen:tetrahedral cation ratio (NBO/T) in parentheses): Li2FeSi3O8 (LI2: 1.33), Rb2FeSi3O8 (RB2: 1.33), Nal.08Fel.l7Si3.l3O8 (NAl: 1.09), Nal.46Ca0.24Fel.08Si2.97O8 (NC6: 1.38), Nal.09Ca0.51Fe0.72Si3.10O8 (NC2: 1.15), Na0.99Ca0.92Fe0.24 Si3.17O8 (NCl: 1.04), and Na0.29Mg0.53Ca0.52Fe0.56Al0.91Si2.44O8 (BAS: 1.05). Mössbauer, XANES, and EXAFS information suggests that iron is dominantly ferrous in all glasses (<10 atom% Fe(III)) with an average first-neighbor Fe(II) coordination varying from ∼ 4 to 5.2 (±0.2) oxygens. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of each sample exhibits intense absorption centered near 8100-9200 cm−1 and weak absorption near 5000 cm−l, which cannot be assigned unambiguously. The MCD spectrum of NC6 glass, which is the first such measurement on a silicate glass, shows three transitions at ∼8500 cm−1, ∼6700 cm−1, and ∼4500 cm−1. The behavior of these MCD bands as a function of temperature (1.6 K to 300 K) and magnetic field strength (1 T to 7 T) indicates that they most likely arise from three distinct Fe(II) sites with different ground states, two of which are 5-coordinated and one of which is 4-coordinated by oxygens.The combined results suggest that Fe(II) predominantly occupies 5- and 4-coordinated sites in each glass, with the ratios differing for the different compositions. Small amounts of 6-coordinated Fe(II) are possible as well, but primarily in the more basic glass compositions such as BAS. The substitution of Li(I) for Rb(I) in the M2FeSi3O8 base glass composition causes a weakening of the average Fe(II)-O bond, as indicated by the longer Fe(II)-O distance in the latter. The basalt composition glass was found to have the largest Fe(II) sites relative to those in the other glasses in this study. A bond valence model that helps predict the coordination number of Fe(II) in silicate glasses is proposed. The structural information extrapolated to Fe(II)-bearing melts is parameterized using bond valence theory, which helps to rationalize the melt-crystal partitioning behavior of ferrous iron in natural and synthetic melt-crystal systems.  相似文献

Over the past two decades development has been shifting its focus toward smaller scales and particular problems. As a result, the household has become an increasingly important institution for development, and has come under increased scrunity as development practitioners and scholars seek to better understand this institution’s functions and foundations, trying to ‘get the household right’. These efforts, rather than clarifying the character and the function of the household, have contributed to its indeterminacy by reifying the very institution they seek to analyse. Arguing that these efforts fundamentally miss the point of examining the household, this paper introduces a different framework of analysis that addresses the household not as a fixed object of research, but as a local construction that embodies flows of power and knowledge both within and transcending the local. Using the example of varying constructions of the household in two villages in Ghana’s Central Region, this article illustrates how such an approach allows us to address the various functions of the household as particular embodiments of these flows, an approach that better explains the endurance or ephemerality of these functions. Such an approach provides a stronger foundation for the consideration of how particular constructions of this institution may have troubling implications for issues like gender equity and sustainability.  相似文献

Seismic imaging of the laterally varying D" region beneath the Cocos Plate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We use an axisymmetric, spherical Earth finite difference algorithm to model SH -wave propagation through cross-sections of laterally varying lower mantle models beneath the Cocos Plate derived from recent data analyses. Synthetic seismograms with dominant periods as short as 4 s are computed for several models: (1) a D" reflector 264 km above the core–mantle boundary with laterally varying S -wave velocity increases of 0.9–2.6 per cent, based on localized structures from a 1-D double-array stacking method; (2) an undulating D" reflector with large topography and uniform velocity increase obtained using a 3-D migration method and (3) cross-sections through the 3-D mantle S -wave velocity tomography model TXBW. We apply double-array stacking to assess model predictions of data. Of the models explored, the S -wave tomography model TXBW displays the best overall agreement with data. The undulating reflector produces a double Scd arrival that may be useful in future studies for distinguishing between D" volumetric heterogeneity and D" discontinuity topography. Synthetics for the laterally varying models show waveform variability not observed in 1-D model predictions. It is challenging to predict 3-D structure based on localized 1-D models when lateral structural variations are on the order of a few wavelengths of the energy used, particularly for the grazing geometry of our data. Iterative approaches of computing synthetic seismograms and adjusting model characteristics by considering path integral effects are necessary to accurately model fine-scale D" structure.  相似文献

This article targets the role of intermediaries, such as refugee resettlement programs, in altering the geography of the foreign‐born. It argues that, under such intermediaries, destination choice within the United States is largely determined not by economic mechanisms but instead by information‐related factors such as friction of distance, migration chains, labor procurement, and resettlement intermediaries. Metropolitan statistical area (MSA) destinations are grouped into four profiles based on their mix of foreign‐born. The result is sets of MSAs differentiated by the era of immigration, immigrant origins, geographic pattern, and place characteristics that draw migrants. To evaluate intermediary impacts, monies allocated to states by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, refugee resettlement by state, and refugee movements to MSAs are expressed as a Refugee Resettlement Index and linked to MSA profiles. We conclude that although refugees constitute only a portion of total immigration, their effects are disproportionately large in terms of changing the foreign‐born profiles of MSAs and other communities, changing the fabric of society, and changing the geography of the foreign‐born in all its ramifications.  相似文献
