Hydrochemical data for meteoric waters of the uplifted carbonate platform of northern Guam show that, contrary to recent models of lowstand diagenesis, phreatic dissolution is active beneath a 60–180 m thick vadose zone. Overland flow during high intensity rainfall events is focussed into surface detention ponds, which drain very rapidly via the epikarst and vertical fissures to the freshwater lens. We estimate that these waters contribute 13% of dissolved calcium in samples from pumping wells but may also deliver aggressive and/or organic-rich waters to the lens. Fast-flow vadose waters mix with lens-top waters to form fresher cap that discharges rapidly coastwards via cavernous porosity. Slower vadose percolation, sampled as cave drips, equilibrates with bedrock within the upper 30 m of the vadose zone, accounting for some 46% of dissolved calcium in the lens waters. The remaining 41% calcium is generated by net dissolution within the lens. 相似文献

We assess the accuracy of some indirect approaches to invariant point (IVP), or system reference point, determination of satellite
laser ranging (SLR) and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) systems using both observed and simulated survey data sets.
Indirect IVP determination involves the observation of targets located on these systems during specific rotational sequences
and by application of geometrical models that describe the target motion during these sequences. Of concern is that most SLR
and VLBI systems have limited rotational freedom thereby placing constraint on the reliability of parameter estimation, including
the IVP position. We assess two current approaches to IVP analysis using survey data observed at the Yarragadee (Australia)
SLR and the Medicina (Italy) VLBI sites and also simulated data of a large rotationally constrained (azimuth-elevation) VLBI
system. To improve reliability we introduce and assess some new geometric conditions, including inter-axis, inter-circle and
inter-target conditions, to existing IVP analysis strategies. The error component of a local tie specifically associated with
the indirect determination of SLR and VLBI IVP is less than 0.5 mm. For systems with significant rotational limits we find
that the inter-axis and inter-circle conditions are critical to the computation of unbiased IVP coordinates at the sub-millimetre
level. When the inter-axis and inter-circle geometric conditions are not imposed, we retrieve biased vertical coordinates
of the IVP (in our simulated VLBI system) in the range of 1.2–3.4 mm. Using the new geometric conditions we also find that
the axis-offset estimates can be recovered at the sub- millimetre accuracy (0.5 mm). 相似文献

We describe the use of bivariate three-dimensional empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) in characterising low frequency variability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) in the Hadley Centre global climate model, HadCM3. We find that the leading two modes are well correlated with an index of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) on decadal timescales, with the leading mode alone accounting for 54% of the decadal variance. Episodes of coherent oscillations in the sub-space of the leading EOFs are identified; these episodes are of great interest for the predictability of the THC, and could indicate the existence of different regimes of natural variability. The mechanism identified for the multi-decadal variability is an internal ocean mode, dominated by changes in convection in the Nordic Seas, which lead the changes in the MOC by a few years. Variations in salinity transports from the Arctic and from the North Atlantic are the main feedbacks which control the oscillation. This mode has a weak feedback onto the atmosphere and hence a surface climatic influence. Interestingly, some of these climate impacts lead the changes in the overturning. The secular stellar mass loss causes an amplification of the orbital separation in fragile, common proper motion, binary systems with separations of the order of 1000 A.U. In these systems, companions evolve as two independent coeval stars as they experience negligible mutual tidal interactions or mass transfer. We present models for how post-main sequence mass-loss statistically distorts the frequency distribution of separations in fragile binaries. These models demonstrate the expected increase in orbital separation resulting from stellar mass-loss, as well as a perturbation of associated orbital parameters. Comparisons between our models and observations resulting from the Luyten survey of wide visual binaries, specifically those containing MS and white-dwarf pairs, demonstrate a good agreement between the calculated and the observed angular separation distribution functions. 相似文献

Few studies of residential segregation in cities have directly addressed the issue of spatial scale, apart from noting that the traditional indices of segregation tend to be larger when calculated for small rather than large spatial units. That observation however ignores Duncan et al.’s (Statistical geography: problems in analyzing areal data. Free Press, Glencoe, 1961) explication that any measure of segregation at a fine-grained scale necessarily incorporates, to an unknown extent, segregation at a larger scale within which the finer-grained units are nested. To avoid that problem, a multi-level modelling perspective is introduced that identifies the intensity of segregation at each scale net of its intensity at any larger scale included in the analysis. It is applied to an analysis of the emergence of Chicago’s Black ghetto over the twentieth century’s first three decades, using data at the ward and ED scales. It shows that across Chicago as a whole segregation was equally as intense at the two scales, with statistically significant increases in that intensity at both scales across the three decades. At the finer scale, however, segregation was much more intense across the EDs within those wards that formed the core of the emerging ghetto than it was in the remainder of the city. 相似文献

Community readiness for a new tsunami warning system: quasi-experimental and benchmarking evaluation of a school education component 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Youth preparedness for disasters is a growing area of research. However, studies to date have relied on cross-sectional, correlational
research designs. The current study replicated aspects of the one other study to date that has used a quasi-experimental strategy
to evaluate youth preparedness for disasters. This study evaluated whether children were more knowledgeable and prepared for
hazards generally but also in more specific relation to the rollout of a new tsunami warning system. Using a pretest–posttest
with benchmarking design, the study found that following a brief school education program, supplementing a larger community-wide
effort, children reported significant gains in preparedness indicators including increased knowledge as well as increases
in physical and psychosocial preparedness. Within group effect sizes compared favorably with those from the previous experimental
study in this area used to benchmark current intervention-produced findings and produced hints that combining school education
programs with larger community preparedness efforts can enhance preparedness. Given that this is only one of two experimentally-based
studies in an area of research largely dominated by cross-sectional designs, future research should consider the use of experimental
designs, including those that are pragmatic and fit with needs of the school. The current approach has limitations that need
to be considered. However, it also has some real advantages, including being used more extensively in fieldwork studies that
evaluate various types of interventions. Through increased use of experimental design strategies, researchers can then also
have increased confidence that educational programs are the source of increases in disaster resilience in youth and their

The aim of this study was to investigate causes of injury during the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Data on patients injured during the Darfield (4 September 2010) and Christchurch (22 February 2011) earthquakes were sourced from the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation. The total injury burden was analyzed for demography, context of injury, causes of injury, and injury type. Injury context was classified as direct (shaking of the primary earthquake or aftershocks causing unavoidable injuries), action (movement of person during the primary earthquake or aftershocks causing potentially avoidable injuries), and secondary (cause of injury after shaking ceased). Nine categories of injury cause were identified. Three times as many people were injured in the Christchurch earthquake as in the Darfield earthquake (7,171 vs. 2,256). The primary shaking caused approximately two-thirds of the injuries from both quakes. Actions during the primary shaking and aftershocks led to many injuries (51.3 % Darfield and 19.4 % Christchurch). Primary direct caused the highest proportion of injuries during the daytime Christchurch quake (43.6 %). Many people were injured after shaking stopped in both events: 499 (22.1 % Darfield) and 1,881 (26.2 % Christchurch). Most of these people were injured during clean-up (320 (14.2 %) Darfield; 622 (8.7 %) Christchurch). In both earthquakes, more females than males (1,453 vs. 803 Darfield; 4,646 vs. 2,525 Christchurch) were injured (except by masonry, damaged ground, and during clean-up); trip/fall (27.9 % Darfield; 26.1 % Christchurch) was the most common cause of injury; and soft tissue injuries (74.1 % Darfield; 70.4 % Christchurch) was the most common type of injury. The magnitude and extent of eutrophication was assessed at 27 segments in 23 estuaries in the Southern California Bight (SCB) between October 2008 and 2009. We applied thresholds from the existing assessment frameworks from both the European Union and the U.S. National Eutrophication Assessment to measurements of three indicators [macroalgae biomass and cover, phytoplankton biomass, and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration] to categorize eutrophic condition in each estuary. Based on these frameworks, a large fraction of segments had moderate or worse eutrophic condition—78 % based on macroalgae, 39 % for phytoplankton, and 63 % for DO. Macroalgal biomass exceeding 70 g dw m?2 and 25 % cover was found at 52 % of sites during any sampling event and in 33 % of segments for 8 weeks or longer, a duration found to negatively impact benthic infauna. Duration of hypoxic events (DO?<?4 mg L?1) was typically short, with most events less than one day; although 53 % of segments had at least one event longer than 24 h. Assessment frameworks of eutrophic condition are likely to evolve over time as the body of literature on eutrophication grows, including aspects such as the applicability of indicators in specific habitat types, indicator thresholds, and how event frequency and duration are incorporated. This paper informs this debate by discussing how eutrophic conditions in SCB estuaries are categorized using different indicators and thresholds. To this end, categorization of estuarine eutrophic condition was found to be very sensitive to the type of threshold, how data are integrated to represent duration or spatial extent, and how indicators are used as multiple lines of evidence. 相似文献

Youth and families have been identified as particularly vulnerable to the effects of hazardous events. This study examined
correlates of hazards education involvement for youth. Participants were 407 youth between the ages of 7 and 18 who filled
out several indices reflecting hazards awareness, risk perceptions, psychological factors, knowledge, and adoption of hazards
adjustments and family emergency plans. Additionally, interactive factors were assessed, the extent to which education programs
encouraged youth to discuss their learning with parents and whether such discussions occurred. Overall, findings replicated
and extended previous research. First, younger children were generally seen to be more prepared; girls, more knowledgeable.
Second, youth involved in education programs had significantly higher levels of correct knowledge of readiness and response
behaviors, lower levels of incorrect knowledge, and reported more home-based hazards adjustments. One important area where
no differences were seen was in the area of family emergency planning. Predictors of increased educational benefits included
program recency, encouragement to interact with parents and, to a slightly lesser extent, parent discussion willingness. Combined
with previous research indicating that even simple and brief reading and discussion programs can produce tangible benefits,
findings here encourage the incorporation of easy-to-do features that can increase benefits for youth and their families. 相似文献

The Aegean island of Thera (Santorini) was covered by tephra from its cataclysmic Late Bronze Age (ca. 3600 yr B.P.) eruption. Vertical exposures of the eruptive sequence show secondary, nonvolcanic, circular (in cross section) features composed of stratified sediment. Many are inaccessible from the floors of modern quarries and appear to be caves filled with younger sediment, but show no connection to the land surface. A filled cave was found in the wall of a modern gully outside the modern quarries, and a filled cave was found in a terrace scarp, well above the modern gully. Natural (and probably rapid) incision by gullies into the thick tephra deposit left many locations with lateral access to tephra. Inhabitants from post‐Minoan to recent times excavated tephra for materials and buildings, and caves were subsequently filled by sporadic (possibly seasonal) flood events that deposited sediment. These gullies may have provided access for modern tephra removal that isolated the filled caves high on the modern quarry walls. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
