Previous geochemical and biomarker studies of the late Paleo-Mesoproterozoic propose a stratified world, with strongly reducing (possibly sulfidic) deep-ocean conditions overlain by an oxygenated surface-ocean and atmosphere. To investigate such a scenario, we look to the structure of the biogeochemical sulfur cycle. We present sulfur (32S, 33S, 34S, and 36S in sulfides) isotope data from the McArthur Basin (Barney Creek, Reward, Velkerri, and McMinn formations) that allows for a direct evaluation of the surface biosphere. We are interested in investigating the types of information that can be gained by including 33S and 36S. When the 34S/32S fractionations are small, the inclusion of 33S and 36S provides little additional information, but does provide ancillary evidence for relative isotopic homogeneity (with the internal consistency of 33S/32S and 36S/32S). When the 34S/32S fractionations are large, direct information about the fractionation mechanisms can be obtained, with the potential to distinguish the biological from abiological processes. For example, the reconstruction of the Roper Group suggests that seawater sulfate concentrations were high enough to buffer against spatial heterogeneities. Overall, our findings agree with previously proposed redox structure of the Proterozoic ocean, highlight contributions from the oxidative sulfur cycle, and outline a new tool for interpreting the state of the surface sulfur cycle. 相似文献

The Danube Delta-Black Sea region of Romania is an important wetland, and this preliminary study evaluates the significance of this region as a source of atmospheric CH4. Measurements of the mixing ratio and δ13C in CH4 are reported from air and water samples collected at eight sites in the Danube Delta. High mixing ratios of CH4 were found in air (2500–14,000 ppb) and dissolved in water samples (∼1–10 μmol L−1), demonstrating that the Danube Delta is an important natural source of CH4. The intercepts on Keeling plots of about −62‰ show that the main source of CH4 in this region is microbial, probably resulting primarily from acetate fermentation. Atmospheric CH4 and CO data from the NOAA/ESRL (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Earth System Research Laboratory) were used to make a preliminary estimate of biogenic CH4 at the Black Sea sampling site at Constanta (BSC). These data were used to calculate ratios of CH4/CO in air samples, and using an assumed CH4/CO anthropogenic emissions ratio of 0.6, fossil fuel emissions at BSC were estimated. Biogenic CH4 emissions were then estimated by a simple mass balance approach. The AUSGeoid98 gravimetric geoid model of Australia has been computed using data from the EGM96 global geopotential model,
the 1996 release of the Australian gravity database, a nationwide digital elevation model, and satellite altimeter-derived
marine gravity anomalies. The geoid heights are on a 2 by 2 arc-minute grid with respect to the GRS80 ellipsoid, and residual
geoid heights were computed using the 1-D fast Fourier transform technique. This has been adapted to include a deterministically
modified kernel over a spherical cap of limited spatial extent in the generalised Stokes scheme. Comparisons of AUSGeoid98
with GPS and Australian Height Datum (AHD) heights across the continent give an RMS agreement of ±0.364 m, although this apparently
large value is attributed partly to distortions in the AHD.

Using observational data of geomagnetic total intensity from 13 stations in the Beijing-Tianjin region, 3 stations in the
western Yunnan region of China, and 6 stations in California of U. S. A., the daily variations and their spectra of geomagnetic
total intensity were analyzed and compared. The results show that the morphology, the range and spectrum of daily variations
in geomagnetic total intensity are basically the same within the local extent of 100–200 km and are different in the large
extent of 500 km. The latitude factor of the daily variation range of geomagnetic total intensity is about 1–2 nT/degree within
the latitude extent of 25°–40°.
