This paper documents a continuous  44,000-yr pollen record derived from the Mfabeni Peatland on the Maputaland Coastal Plain. A detailed fossil pollen analysis indicates the existence of extensive Podocarpus-abundant coastal forests before  33,000 cal yr BP. The onset of wetter local conditions after this time is inferred from forest retreat and the development of swampy conditions. Conditions during the last glacial maximum ( 21,000 cal yr BP) are inferred to have been colder and drier than the present, as evidenced by forest retreat and replacement of swampy reed/sedge communities by dry grassland. Forest growth and expansion during the Holocene Altithermal ( 8000–6000 cal yr BP) indicates warm, relatively moist conditions. Previous records from Maputaland have suggested a northward migration of Podocarpus forest during the late Holocene. However, we interpret a mid-Holocene decline in Podocarpus at Mfabeni as evidence of deforestation. Forest clearance during the mid-Holocene is supported by the appearance of Morella serrata, suggesting a shift towards more open grassland/savanna, possibly due to burning. These signals of human impact are coupled with an increase in Acacia, indicative of the development of secondary forest and hence disturbance.  相似文献

Detailed mapping and C and O stable isotopic data from sedimentary carbonate in units both above and below the paleo-erosion surface on the Bitter Springs Formation (BSF) in the northeastern Amadeus Basin, Australia, have clarified the stratigraphy of the area. Isotopic data indicate that the top of the Loves Creek Member of the Bitter Springs Formation is preserved near Corroboree Rock, and is overlain by fenestrate-carbonate-clast breccia, and dolomitic quartz sandstone and chert-pebble conglomerate of the Pioneer Sandstone. The isotopic data, as well as lithologic data, indicate the presence of a 1–2 m-thick cap carbonate preserved between Corroboree Rock and areas 10 km to the northeast. In many places the cap carbonate layer is mostly a syn-sedimentary dolomite-clast breccia, consistent with deposition and disturbance in shallow water. C and O isotopic data also indicate that thin-bedded sandstone and dolomite above the Bitter Springs Formation at Ellery Creek, and a newly discovered massive chert-bearing dolomite at Ross River could both belong to the glaciogenic Olympic Formation. Detailed mapping also provides a more detailed context for the famous black chert microfossil locality in the Bitter Springs Formation at Ross River.  相似文献

Ion probe U‐Th‐Pb dating of zircons from the Late Archaean granites of the Norseman region of the southeastern Yilgarn shows the existence of two distinct magmatic episodes. Large regional tonalite and granodiorite plutons were emplaced between 2685 and 2690 Ma, whereas large regional granite, and small tonalite and leucogranite plutons that intrude the greenstones have ages of 2660–2665 Ma. A small body of granite that intrudes the western edge of the greenstones has an inferred emplacement of 2672 ± 7Ma, and contains inherited zircon that is ~2800 Ma. The monzogranite core from a second pluton in a similar structural position also contains ~2800 Ma zircon; this age is similar to published Sm‐Nd and Rb‐Sr whole rock ages for banded gneisses associated with other members of this suite of domal plutons and is interpreted as representing the age of a significant component within the source region for these distinctive rocks.

Available geochemical and isotopic data are interpreted as indicating derivation of both the older granodiorite and younger granite suites through anatexis of pre‐existing crust of broadly andesitic composition, whereas both the domal granites and the small, late tonalite plutons could have been derived by anatexis of heterogeneous material similar to that represented by the banded gneisses.

If regional metamorphism was related to the emplacement of large volumes of felsic magma within the upper crust, as suggested by Binns et al. (1976), then the Norseman area has probably undergone two periods of regional metamorphism of comparable intensity at approximately 2660 and 2685 Ma.  相似文献

Primary 18O values for tonalitic rocks from the San Jacinto Intrusive Complex range from +9.0 to +10.6; initial87Sr/86Sr for the same samples varies from 0.7058 to 0.7076. Rocks with low 18O tend to have higher initial87Sr/86Sr. The majority of samples have a limited range of 18O values (+10.0–+10.4) that is anticorrelated with colour index; this variation is compatible with crystallization of rocks with varying mineral abundances from an homogeneous (for oxygen) reservoir. More mafic rocks show a large range of 18O values, reflecting original variations in source material compositions. The combined Sr-O isotope data demonstrate that three or more distinct components were involved in the genesis of these rocks; these three components are also seen in batholithic rocks from the Mojave Block and Sierra Nevada to the north. These data are interpreted as indicating a 0–35% (oxygen atom basis) contribution to the San Jacinto rocks from an old continental lithosphere source.Division Contribution No. 4064  相似文献

The crystal structure of ScAlO3 has been refined at temperatures up to 1100° C on the basis of x-ray powder diffraction data. The thermal expansion is adequately described by a Grüneisen-Debye model with the elastic Debye temperature and an effective Grüneisen parameter of 1.6. The volumetric thermal expansion of 3.0% between 10 and 1100° C, corresponding to a mean thermal expansion coefficient of 2.7 × 10−5 K−1, is entirely attributable to the expansion of the AlO6 octahedra. The interoctahedral angles, though not fixed by symmetry, do not vary significantly with temperature —indicating that the expansivities of the constituent AlO6 and distorted ScO8 polyhedra are well matched. Similar considerations of polyhedral expansivity suggest thermal expansion coefficients of ∼2 × 10−5K−1 for cubic CaSiO3 perovskite and a value between 2 × 10−5 K−1 and 4 × 10−5 K−1 for MgSiO3 perovskite. The lower value is consistent with the reconnaissance measurements for Mg0.9Fe0.1SiO3 (Knittle et al. 1986) below 350° C, with low-temperature measurements of single-crystal MgSiO3 (Ross and Hazen 1989), and with the results of some recent calculations. The markedly greater expansivity ∼4 × 10−5 K−1 measured at higher temperatures (350–570° C) by Knittle et al. is inconsistent with the simple Grüneisen-Debye quasiharmonic model and may reflect the marginal metastability of the orthorhombic perovskite phase. Under these circumstances, extrapolation of the measured expansivity is hazardous and may result in the under-estimation of lower mantle densities and the drawing of inappropriate inferences concerning the need for chemical stratification of the Earth's mantle.  相似文献

Agricultural change in Southeast Asia over the last three decades is reviewed within the context of structural change of the region's economies. An agricultural typology is outlined and the degree to which agricultural systems have remained static is examined leading to the identification of various kinds and degrees of change amongst the systems – extensification, intensification and disintensification. The paper concludes that while macro-level structural change is the basic process driving changes in agriculture, there remain important issues of long-term sustainability, poverty and distribution of benefits.  相似文献

We explore the efficacy of “super parameterization” (SP) in ocean modeling in which local 2-d non-hydrostatic plume-resolving fine-grained (FG) models are embedded at each vertical column of a coarse-grained (CG) hydrostatic model. A general multi-scale algorithm is described in which tendencies from the FG models are projected onto the CG model which in turn constrains the average state of the FG models, coupling the two models together. The approach is tested in the context of models of open ocean deep convection and compared with a pure hydrostatic, coarse resolution model using convective adjustment (HYD) and a full 3-d non-hydrostatic plume-resolving simulation (NH). The SP model is found to be greatly superior to HYD at much less computational cost than the fully non-hydrostatic calculation.  相似文献
