Hyporheic exchange increases the potential for solute retention in streams by slowing downstream transport and increasing solute contact with the substrate. Hyporheic exchange may be a major mechanism to remove nutrients in semi‐arid watersheds, where livestock have damaged stream riparian zones and contributed nutrients to stream channels. Debris dams, such as beaver dams and anthropogenic log dams, may increase hyporheic interactions by slowing stream water velocity, increasing flow complexity and diverting water to the subsurface. Here, we report the results of chloride tracer injection experiments done to evaluate hyporheic interaction along a 320 m reach of Red Canyon Creek, a second order stream in the semi‐arid Wind River Range of Wyoming. The study site is part of a rangeland watershed managed by The Nature Conservancy of Wyoming, and used as a hydrologic field site by the University of Missouri Branson Geologic Field Station. The creek reach we investigated has debris dams and tight meanders that hypothetically should enhance hyporheic interaction. Breakthrough curves of chloride measured during the field experiment were modelled with OTIS‐P, a one‐dimensional, surface‐water, solute‐transport model from which we extracted the storage exchange rate α and cross‐sectional area of the storage zone As for hyporheic exchange. Along gaining reaches of the stream reach, short‐term hyporheic interactions associated with debris dams were comparable to those associated with severe meanders. In contrast, along the non‐gaining reach, stream water was diverted to the subsurface by debris dams and captured by large‐scale near‐stream flow paths. Overall, hyporheic exchange rates along Red Canyon Creek during snowmelt recession equal or exceed exchange rates observed during baseflow at other streams. The south polar region of the Moon contains areas permanently shadowed from solar illumination, which may provide cold traps for volatiles such as water ice. Previous radar studies have emphasized the search for diagnostic polarization signatures of thick ice in areas close to the pole, but near-surface regolith properties and regional geology are also important to upcoming orbital studies of the shadowed terrain. To study regional regolith variations, we collected 70-cm wavelength, 450-m resolution, dual-circular polarization radar data for latitudes 60-90° S using the Arecibo and Greenbank telescopes. The circular polarization ratio, μc, is sensitive to differences in rock abundance at the surface and up to tens of m below the surface, depending upon the regolith loss tangent. We observe significant variations in μc, attributed to changes in the surface and subsurface rock population, across the south polar highlands. Concentric haloes of low polarization ratio surrounding Hausen, Moretus, and other young craters represent rock-poor ejecta layers. Values of μc up to ∼1 occur in the floors and near-rim deposits of Eratosthenian and Copernican craters, consistent with abundant rocky ejecta and/or fractured impact melt. Enhanced μc values also correspond to areas mapped as Orientale-derived, plains-forming material [Wilhelms, D.E., Howard, K.A., Wilshire, H.G., 1979. USGS Map I-1162], and similar polarization properties characterize the permanently shadowed floors of craters Faustini and Shoemaker. Small areas of very high (>1.5) circular polarization ratio occur on shadowed and seasonally sunlit terrain, and appear to be associated with small craters. We suggest that regolith in low-lying areas near the south pole is characterized by a significant impact melt component from Orientale, which provides a source for excavation of the block-rich ejecta around small craters observed in this and earlier radar studies. The lower portion of the interior wall of Shackleton crater, permanently shadowed from the sun but visible from Earth, is not significantly different in 70-cm scattering properties from diurnally/seasonally sunlit areas of craters with similar morphology. 相似文献

Abstract— Cosmic spherules obtained from the Greenland ice cap, deep-sea sediments, and ancient oceanic deposits of Eocene and Jurassic age were chemically and texturally compared. The proportions of spherule types were found to change as a function of time, with the number of iron spherules increasing as the age of the sample increased. It is not yet possible, however, to determine if the variation in spherule types represents a real change in the meteoroid complex or is a result of differential weathering of the spherules in the Earth's environment. The age of these spherules ranges from less than 3000 years to about 190 million years. Although only a few spherules older than 500 000 years are chemically unaltered, textural information is available even from the oldest spherules and, by comparison with contemporary spherules, gives some insight into the original compositions of the particles. 相似文献

Summary. The waveforms and travel times of S and SS phases in the range 10°–60° have been used to derive upper mantle shear velocity structures for two distinct tectonic provinces in North America. Data from earthquakes on the East Pacific Rise recorded at stations in western North America were used to derive a tectonic upper mantle model. Events on the north-west coast of North America and earthquakes off the coast of Greenland provided the data to investigate the upper mantle under the Canadian shield. All branches from the triplications due to velocity jumps near 400 and 660 km were observed in both areas. Using synthetic seismograms to model these observations placed tight constraints on heterogeneity in the upper mantle and on the details of its structure. SS–S travel-time differences of 30 s along with consistent differences in waveforms between the two data sets require substantial heterogeneity to at least 350 km depth. Velocities in the upper 170 km of the shield are about 10 per cent higher than in the tectonic area. At 250 km depth the shield velocities are still greater by about 4.5 per cent and they gradually merge near 400 km. Below 400 km no evidence for heterogeneity was found. The two models both have first-order discontinuities of 4.5 per cent at 405 km and 7.5 per cent at 695 km. Both models also have lids with lower velocities beneath. In the western model the lid is very thin and of relatively low velocity. In the shield the lid is 170 km thick with very high elocity (4.78 km s-1 ); below it the velocity decreases to about 4.65 km s-1 . L. Trafton (1980, Icarus44, 53–61) has pointed out that a substantial methane atmosphere, observed on Pluto by U. Fink, B.A. Smith, D.C. Benner, J.R. Johnson, and H.J. Reitsema (1980, Icarus44, 62–71), appears to be unstable against blowoff. The difficulty is shown to disappear if the actual heat balance and thermal structure are considered, instead of the classic assumption that the upper atmosphere is isothermal. An energy-limited flux (referred to the surface area) of 3.9 × 1010 cm?2 sec?1 is found. The loss of methane ice over the age of the solar system is an acceptable 3 km. 相似文献

We describe Arecibo (2380 MHz, 12.6 cm) Doppler-only radar detections of near-Earth Asteroids 1915 Quetzalcoatl, 3199 Nefertiti, 3757 (1982 XB), and 4034 (1986 PA) obtained between 1981 and 1989. Estimates of the echo spectral bandwidths, radar cross-sections, and circular polarization ratios of these objects constrain their sizes, radar albedos, surface roughnesses, taxonomic classes, rotation periods, and pole directions. Our radar constraints on the diameters of Quetzalcoatl and Nefertiti are most consistent with sizes determined using thermal-radiometry and the Fast Rotation Model (FRM); this consistency may indicate that these asteroids have surfaces of high thermal inertia (i.e., little or no regolith). Constraints on Quetzalcoatl's radar albedo rule out a “metallic M” classification. The radar constraints for Nefertiti are inconsistent with a rotation pole published by Kaasalainen et al. (2004, Icarus 167, 178). Our estimates of 1982 XB's size are consistent with previously published estimates. The radar bandwidth of 1986 PA places an upper bound of about 24 h on its rotation period. 相似文献
