The late Miocene mammalian record in Samos Island, Greece, is extremely important for the Eurasian Neogene mammalian history and chronology. However, due to the mixed nature of old fossil collections and controversies on the stratigraphic position of fossil quarries, great confusion has arisen concerning the recognition of distinct faunal assemblages, their age(s) and biostratigraphic significance. This paper presents the magnetostratigraphy of the late Miocene continental deposits of the fossiliferous Mytilinii Basin, Samos Island, Greece. Old and new sites are stratigraphically controlled with accuracy and correlated with each other. The magnetostratigraphy of seven individual sections, covering the entire Mytilinii Formation, provides good correlation with the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS). These results, as well as the relocation and precise litho- and magnetostratigraphic correlation of the old and new mammal localities, combined with new and reviewed paleontological data and thorough studying of the numerous radiometric dates, allowed us to define five biostratigraphic horizons. A new means of incorporating radiative transfer into smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is introduced, which builds on the success of two previous methods – the polytropic cooling approximation as devised by Stamatellos et al. and flux-limited diffusion. This hybrid method preserves the strengths of its individual components, while removing the need for atmosphere matching or other boundary conditions to marry optically thick and optically thin regions. The code uses a non-trivial equation of state to calculate temperatures and opacities of SPH particles, which captures the effects of H2 dissociation, H0 ionization, He0 and He+ ionization, ice evaporation, dust sublimation, molecular absorption, bound-free and free–free transitions and electron scattering. The method is tested in several scenarios, including (i) the evolution of a  0.07 M  protoplanetary disc surrounding a  0.5 M  star; (ii) the collapse of a  1 M  protostellar cloud and (iii) the thermal relaxation of temperature fluctuations in a static homogeneous sphere.  相似文献

Two approaches for the modelling of turbulence in vegetated flows have been developed in the past. The “microscopic” approach which is straightforward but limited to simple cases and the “macroscopic” approach which is based on Volume Average Theory (VAT). In this study, aspects of Volume-Average (VA) analysis and modelling are investigated for turbulent vegetated flow using computed three-dimensional results from the solution of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations around a representative vegetal element. In particular (a) the VA transport equations for k and ε, based on VAT, are properly derived, (b) the Boussinesq hypothesis for the VA quantities, employed in 〈k〉-〈ε〉 turbulence models is tested, and (c) the values of the coefficients used in such turbulence models are assessed in comparison with those used in the classical turbulence models.  相似文献

How much does the 2001 census tell us about the changes in people's life in British cities and regions since 1991? This paper attempts to answer this question by telling the stories of two British northern cities: Leeds and Sheffield. In particular, the paper investigates and compares socio-economic change in these cities on the basis of actual 1991 and 2001 census data as well as estimated non-census data. A static spatial microsimulation model is used to combine the outputs of the 1991 and 2001 censuses of UK population with data from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) data. In particular, selected Small Area Statistics (SAS) tables from the 1991 and 2001 censuses are used as constraints in the spatial microsimulation modelling exercise, which aims to reweight BHPS household records so that they satisfy these constraints. The paper briefly discusses the change in these census variables across different localities of the two cities. It is then shown how the changes in these variables affect the simulation of non-census variables. Further, the microsimulation model is used to estimate the trends in income inequalities and child poverty between and within the two cities. Finally, the paper discusses the implication of the research findings for policy formulation.  相似文献

This article presents a complete mathematical model, which translates discrepancies between two orthophotographs created from different photographs, into precise corrections of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). These corrections are the differences from the real surface and, if applied over the existing DEM, can produce a more accurate one. The mathematical model is straightforward, and is not approximate, and therefore there is no need for iterations.
Possible applications include checking of automatically created DEMs, refinement of existing DEMs using aerial photographs and update of orthophotographs based on the previous DEM and new imagery.  相似文献

Pozzolanic-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) is an effective, yet economic remediation technology to immobilize heavy metals in contaminated soils and sludges. In the present study, fly ash waste materials were used along with quicklime (CaO) to immobilize lead, trivalent and hexavalent chromium present in artificially contaminated clayey sand soils. The degree of heavy metal immobilization was evaluated using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) as well as controlled extraction experiments. These leaching test results along with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray (SEM–EDX) analyses were also implemented to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for immobilization of the heavy metals under study. Finally, the reusability of the stabilized waste forms in construction applications was also investigated by performing unconfined compressive strength and swell tests. The experimental results suggest that the controlling mechanism for both lead and hexavalent chromium immobilization is surface adsorption, whereas for trivalent chromium it is hydroxide precipitation. Addition of quicklime and fly ash to the contaminated soils effectively reduced heavy metal leachability well below the nonhazardous regulatory limits. Overall, fly ash addition increases the immobilization pH region for all heavy metals tested, and significantly improves the stress-strain properties of the treated solids, thus allowing their reuse as readily available construction materials. The only potential problem associated with this quicklime–fly ash treatment is the excessive formation of the pozzolanic product ettringite in the presence of sulfates. Ettringite, when brought in contact with water, may cause significant swelling and subsequent deterioration of the stabilized matrix. Addition of minimum amounts of barium hydroxide was shown to effectively eliminate ettringite formation. Overall, due to the presence of very high levels of heavy metal contamination along with sulfates in the solid matrices under study, the results presented herein can be applied to the management of incinerator and coal fly ash, boiler slag and flue gas desulfurization wastes.  相似文献

The effects of the foundation compliance on the dynamic response of yielding systems are evaluated using rigorous dimensional analysis. To this end, a soil-foundation-structure system is subjected to strong ground motion and its seismic response is determined in terms of dimensionless parameters. The seismic demand of the system is calculated as a function of meaningful engineering parameters, such as the yielding acceleration and yielding displacement of the structure, the system mass and damping, as well as the dynamic characteristics of the foundation. It is proved that the seismic demand is strongly dependent on the foundation to excitation pulse predominant frequency ratio. For large values of yielding acceleration, the demand depends strongly on the yielding displacement and the mass. Moreover, there is a strength range where an increase in strength results in an increase in displacements—a counter intuitive situation. The larger the yielding displacement, the larger the seismic demand. Furthermore, the larger the foundation soil mass, the larger the seismic demand. Finally, an application of the procedure on an actual structure proves that soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) is not always beneficial for the structure.  相似文献

We use the method of surrogates to test the structure of variability in nine paleoclimate reconstructions and to compare temperature trends with that of the modern temperature record in the Northern hemisphere. Three different algorithms are used to generate surrogate time series: the iterated amplitude adjusted Fourier transform (IAAFT), the statically transformed autoregressive process (STAP) and a modification of STAP, which generates surrogates of arbitrary length (STAPL). We assessed through formal statistical tests that the surrogates preserve the LTP structure of the reconstructed time series of global temperature, using different measures (Hurst exponent, DFA exponent and R/S analysis). Then using the same surrogates we tested for the presence of a linear trend at least as great as the trend of the modern time series against the null hypothesis that the observed trend is only due to LTP. The null hypothesis could be rejected at the lowest possible significance level for all but two of the reconstructions. The result from the non-parametric test adds further statistical evidence to that of earlier parametric studies that the observed global warming trend in the modern time series cannot be adequately explained by natural agents of variability.  相似文献
